Dave was pretty good and they didn’t gain much by cutting him. Any decent backup tight end will cost about the same.

Yes they are in bad cap shape but will find a way to get through it and still find a way to win 13 games next season. Just ask the Pats, they do it every year.

Looking at the contract information from my new favorite website (spotrac.com), they are still almost $16 mil over the cap after these moves. I’m not sure how they’re going to do it. Brees ($17.4 mil) could restructure, but he’d almost be guaranteeing his own release in a couple of years due to a probably cap number near $30 mil.

One reason they’re in this predicament is that they are paying their guards like tackles. Between Evans and Grubbs (and I know they’re great talents), they are getting a cap charge of over $17 mil. Will Smith is counting $14.5 mil, with nearly $7 mil sunk.

Releasing Vilma (he was traded by the Jets because he was a misfit in the 3-4, remember) would save $6 mil. Pierre Thomas doesn’t have any sunk cost, so he could clear $2.5 mil.

The sunk costs are really astonshing. There are so many players with large cap numbers that can’t really come down even if released because of the acceleration of bonuses. They are in a bad, bad situation financially.

Thomas was a very good tight end for a couple of seasons. It’s a shame about his noggin. Poor guy hasn’t been the same player since.
