Peyton already has recruited Freeney

So when former Colts defensive end (and, for one year, linebacker) Dwight Freeney resurfaces, where will it be?

How about Denver?

Freeney said on Wednesday’s PFT Live that quarterback Peyton Manning already has begun the recruitment effort.

“He sent me a text and he just said, ‘Hey man, don’t worry, come play with me in Denver,” Freeney said.  “I don’t know how serious it was but, you know, it’s good to hear some of your former teammates still follow you, they care and they want to see you succeed.”

So would Freeney want to join Peyton again?

“I think they’ve got a couple good pass rushers over there, I don’t know if they
have room for me,” Freeney said.

Freeney is referring to defensive end Elvis Dumervil and linebacker Von Miller.  Thus, there may not be enough room — and cap dollars — to bring Freeney to town.

Regardless, it’ll be interesting to see where his career takes him.  Here’s hoping the wheel of free agency lands on a team that plays the Colts.

  1. I know what you’re thinking. But actually Peyton checked with Elway, John Fox and Papa John before sending that text.

  2. I thought the prevailing opinion was that Freeney wasn’t nearly as effective on grass? That doesn’t bode well for Denver

  3. Good, I hope he does go to Denver. It will take away the temptation for some other team to waste their money.

  4. I would do it.

Fans gotta understand depth and rotation is good too.. As a Ram’s fan, Robert Quinn and Long are great on the book ends (Both had more than 10 sacks, Rams tied for lead league in sacks BTW). William Hayes, our 3rd DE and also moved in to DT on passing downs, had 7 Sacks. Our other young back up, eugene sims, had 3 sacks. That’s 10 sacks from 2 of your back ups.

Pass rushing is a premium in this day in the league – Denver would be wise to try and lure him and use Manning’s connection to get a better payday (better chance at a ring for freeney too)

  5. Do it at the right price Denver! As good as VM and ED are, I’ll bet they could still learn from Freeney. Having that kind of depth would be awesome. Freeney would have to take the pay cut and the role, and who knows if he will. If he wants a shot at the SB, the Broncos are as good a bet as anyone else.

  6. This is from @AdamSchein: Freeney grew up a Giants fan. He says “playing in New York would be attractive…playing for them would be a dream.”

I think that would be an interesting fit.

  7. That would be deadly! Freeney should take a pay cut to play in Denver and here’s why. Denver’s a legimate contender and you can never have too many pass rushers. 4-3 defense, keep Wolfe at LE on 1st and 2nd slide him inside on 3rd Bring in Freeney on 3rd or passing situations. Wolfe had 6 sacks and emerged late, combine that with Doom and Von from the linebacker spot and you have one of the best pasha rushes in the NFL. Von Doom and Freeney have played LB too so you could move them all over the formation. Its a perfect fit

Peyton should sell him on the fact that he will have the majority of January off …..

When did your team last make the playoffs dunce….

  9. Why would Freeney go to Denver for any reason other than dollars? Denver was not a SB “contender” last year, but rather just one of several teams that lost in the playoffs.

  10. This is really funny watching all these Bronco fans. Lord Peyton couldn’t even get his prized WR Reggie to come over, and Reggie signed for a rather low amount to stay in Indy. No chance Freeney goes to Denver. None.

Broncos should lose a draft pick for this. Offensive coordinators should not be allowed to recruit players from other teams, doesn’t matter if they play defense. This is clearly tampering.

I honestly can’t tell if this is sarcasm, trolling or stupidty.

It actually makes sense for Dallas to pursue him, as he’d be a marked (albeit short term) improvement for replacing Spencer.

  12. We need to get pressure up the middle, freeney is a edge rusher we have miller&dumervil so they can spend there money elsewhere how about Ellerbee we need help at LB and DT.

  14. Ellerbe is going nowhere my fine feathered Bronco fan.
By the way beating you guys in double overtime was a HUGE thrill.

Plus we now know Manning had no feeling in his fingers do to his neck surgery and that’s why he threw all those interceptions to hand us the game.

That’s why Manning never could throw a ball further than 20 yards.

  15. Sure, why not…and let’s bring back Edgerrin James from the abyss and Austin Collie and every other ex-Colt into Donkeyville…and tell Jeff Saturday not to retire.

Man, I sure hope Clady doesn’t give as much effort this season after getting tagged and get’s this egomaniac killed.

  16. the Bronco’s currently are 14.8 million under cap. If they tag Clady, that will leave them about 5 million for Freeny. Really Peyton? That still leaves other players like receivers Willis, and Stokley, Center Koppen, back up tackle chris Clark, a nd on the defensive side guys like Keith Brooking, Justin Bannan, and Tracey porter all unsigned.

Maybe if Peyton is willing to re-do his contract to 10 this year, and give the other 10 to freeney then ok, if not keep dreaming

  17. the Broncos should sign as many Colts as possible, that way when Peyton retires they will have guys experienced in throwing the season for the first pick in the next draft

I think it was a joke, refering to pouty peyton as a coordinator.

Freeney will sign a one year deal in N E , get a ring, retire happy.

    Smiles everyone, smiles!

He’s not a Free Agent. As of now, Freeney is still a member of the Colts because they haven’t released his contract yet. He’s going to enter Free Agency just like the rest of the players whose contracts expire at the end of this season: march 12. He was just informed that the Colts would not offer him a new contract to stay in Indy. They haven’t released him, and his contract hasn’t expired yet.

So, before you call someone a moron, get your facts straight.

  20. Not sure why all these idiots are saying Peyton couldnt deliver Reggie Wayne in free agency last year. Reggie actually resigned with Indy before Peyton signed with Denver. Get a clue people, if Peyton wants somebody delivered, he will close the deal.

  21. Don’t know if he could flip sides, but Freeney with Von stacked on top with Doom on the otherside might be something..

  22. If he wants to play the Colts twice a year then he will try and stay in the AFC South. Jacksonville would be a good fit as they could use a pass rusher. Immediate need.

  23. D-free is a 3rd and long pass rush specialist now, he spins himself out of alot of plays, if u pay him more than 2.5 million a year, yr team over paid

  24. Who’s opposite of Dumerville? Exactly…I’d get him, he’s great on 3rd down and he’s coming off a down year. He’s got 3 good years left, totally a good move
