APNew Bears head coach Marc Trestman is filling out his coaching staff by hiring away a receivers coach from Alabama.
Mike Groh has left his job as Alabama’s wide receivers coach to take the same job in Chicago, BamaOnline.com first reported.
Groh, the son of former Jets head coach Al Groh, has just one season of professional coaching experience, as a quality control coach on his dad’s staff. Mike Groh was the starting quarterback at Virginia in 1994 and 1995 and spent time with the Ravens in training camp in 1996, and he spent several years as an assistant coach at his alma mater.
Now Groh will work with a receiving corps that has an established No. 1 receiver in Brandon Marshall, and Groh’s biggest job will be helping find someone who can develop into a reliable No. 2 receiver.
Just as Nick Saban’s Alabama team keeps producing NFL talent, Saban’s Alabama coaching staff is also sending people to the NFL: Groh follows the same path taken by new Eagles offensive line coach Jeff Stoutland, who parlayed his Alabama job to an NFL job. And just as Saban never has any trouble recruiting new stars on his roster, it didn’t take Saban long to find a replacement for Groh: He has already hired away Billy Napier, who is quitting Florida State after just a month on the Seminoles’ staff to join Saban’s staff at Alabama.

You were being too kind when you mentioned he was an assistant at UVA. His dad made him offense coordinator and he was definitely offensive. And that’s not a compliment.

I think that the majority of posters here got the joke that is so old John McKay used it back when OJ Simpson was a prospect.
Besides if you have to explain the joke or play on words then it was not all that funny to begin with.
Just saying
Wow – another defection to the NFL – for many a great move. However, in 3 days Saban has plucked guys from other schools: FSU and University of Miami that were at their new jobs a month before departing for Bama! I would think that at some point guidelines will be established. If I am an NCAA member it is difficult that Saban can always simply outbid everybody
I think this is a good hire…Hopefully Emery will be the one to find us a #2 WR, via free agency.
We have a #2 already named Alshon Jeffery. He showed promise and is only going to get better. Bears have to many needs to go get a #2 WR
Is everyone forgetting about the tall sticky hands jump higher than heck Alshon Jeffery!!???? He’s our #2! He could be a freak with Cutty and BeastMarshall!!
Alshon Jeffery didn’t seem to need too much development when he was healthy.
I should have said #3 WR. I like Jeffery.
