Kicker/punter market could miss the mark

images

At a time when the market for veteran kickers and punters has been looking a lot like the market for veteran running backs, that could soon be changing.

The buzz in Indy, where tampering season is in full swing, is that agents are desperate to find jobs for kickers due to become free agents on March 12.

In recent years, teams have opted to use the franchise tag on kickers and punters because it was regarded as cheaper to play tag than to sign kickers and punters on the open market. This year, the base tag is $2.9 million for kickers and punters.

Whether that means teams won’t use the franchise tag on certain kickers and punters remains to be seen.
