John Mara’s nephew charged with felony assault

Mara

John Mara, the 22-year-old nephew of Giants co-owner John Mara, has been charged with felony assault, according to the Associated Press.

Arrested on Friday, the younger Mara allegedly hit another person in the head with a bottle on New Year’s Eve.  The victim reportedly suffered life-threatening injuries, which required immediate surgery.

The incident happened in a neighborhood where many Fairfield University students reside.  Mara is a student there.

We’re confident a jury will find him not guilty,” lawyer William Dow told the AP.

We were on the fence about whether to post a blurb on this story, but once the AP deemed it worthy of the national wire, we decided to mention it and move on.  Others opted for headlines claiming that the younger Mara “nearly beat [a] man to death.”

Still, it makes sense to point out that the defendant is Giant’s co-owner John Mara’s nephew named John Mara and not Giants co-owner John Mara’s son, who is also named John Mara.

This is a non-story because the kid has a rich daddy and uncle. He’ll be off in no time and I’m sure the cops will be forced to apologize to him.

Looks like a dangerous character to me…

So, does this count against the “days without an arrest” clock?

So….the name John seems to used a little too much in that family. I think PFT should send them a baby book of names. Maybe they will use a different name on the next round of (rich) kids?!

  7. buddysguys says: Feb 25, 2013 1:41 PM

what was the name Bob taken? I haven’t seen this many Johns since my trip to the Bunny Ranch

Money talks. because he is rich, he will get off. i think they should lock him up for a few years. these guys need to learn to control their tempers.

IMO The league should strip 36$ Million in cap space from the Giants for blatant public stupidity and breaking down the character of the Shield. Seriously, enough bottles to the dome. Wake up Lil Johnnie

  10. scoonie97 says: Feb 25, 2013 1:45 PM

As a result, the NY Giants have asked the league to suspend Dez Bryant one game, and use his game check to pay for Mara’s legal fees.

All in the name of competitive balance.

I’m sure little John Mara will be acquitted of assaulting someone the same way that older John Mara has been twice acquitted of assaulting the Redskin’s and Cowboy’s salary caps.

He was drunk and thought he was christening a yacht. The bottle doesn’t always burst on the 1st whack.

It takes a real dirt bag to hit someone with a bottle. Every group of guys has that one friend who has the loud mouth that cannot defend themselves and is the first to pick up a bottle.

I am a Giants fan and its unfortunate this kid will get away with a slap on the wrist.

  14. dcsween says: Feb 25, 2013 1:52 PM

Under the rules of an uncapped year, you can hit somebody in the head with an uncapped bottle … unless there are secret rules that say the opposite.

Dan Snyder and Jerry Jones have been ordered to pay the defense fees and court costs.

  16. trollaikman8 says: Feb 25, 2013 2:02 PM

Look for the Cowboys, Eagles and Redskins to get penalized for this.

Is this the kid that QBd at Iona Prep or was that cousin Johnny?

  18. logicalvoicesays says: Feb 25, 2013 2:09 PM

    Redskins > Giants.

If it was a Davis, Jones or Snyder I’m sure it would have been posted ASAP.

Mara, Kraft and Rooney run this league and it’s transparent.

I’m sure the little brat will get off.

Nothing will happen to people with money. This guy will get off with some type of community service, picking up trash at a local park. If this was any of us, we go to prison. Must be nice to be a Silver Spoon.

I love seeing the constant bitter comments from Skins and Dallas fans ha. No defending this entitled-minded kid, but you peons who keep bringing up the cap penalties that your rogue owners cost themselves are embarrassing yourselves.

  22. lennydpocketqb says: Feb 25, 2013 2:43 PM

I love the bottomfeeders who bring the Redskins & Cowboys blatant cheating into this conversation. Kid should go to jail if guilty. Lessons must be taught to today’s hot headed youth.

  23. ccjcsr says: Feb 25, 2013 2:57 PM

Called Karma, for spearheading the collusion saga.

  24. normaneinstein7 says: Feb 25, 2013 3:01 PM

Maybe Mara can use some of that Redskins and Cowboys money to pay for his nephew’s anger management.

  25. rexloveshisfeet says: Feb 25, 2013 3:05 PM

Just curious how well the cowboys and redskins were when they cheated and screwed around in the uncapped year. Guess it was not worth it in the end. Go check out the nice rings the giants got last season and that was without cheating. Imagine if we did cheat like you. How good would are team have been

I love the simpletons with their heads buried in the sand.

Mara, Kraft and Rooney run this league.

    It is what it is.

John should have told John to always keep an eye on John to make sure he doesn’t get himself into trouble.

“We’re confident a jury will find him not guilty,” lawyer…

    Awesome.

Don’t need to say he’s not guilty. Just that he won’t go to jail. Because money talks.

I thought this was “pro football talk” not “nephew of NFL owner gets arrested talk” its sad what this site is resorting to.

  32. hatesycophants says: Feb 25, 2013 7:30 PM

Dude, I call BS! There is no legitimate reason to have posted this. And, justifying it with the “they did it” defense is incredibly lame.

“We’re confident a jury will find him not guilty,”

i’m confident too. regardless of whether it’s right or not. still the best country/system in the world, but to think justice is number one in the courts is wrong. a lot of the time it’s about cash and the sport of lawyering
