He is 17-28 in 45 career starts, and all the TDs and garbage passing yards do not hide that fact…For him to have that big a cap hit next year, behind only the Mannings, is ridiculous.

1 step forward … 2 steps back . That was Matt Stafford last year.
I still believe in him and I think he has a bright future with the Lions. He has all the tools to be an elite QB in the NFL.
If the Lions could run the ball he woudn’t have to throw for 5ooo yards every year …

Stafford is a good qb learning the NFL. It surely didn’t help not having a number 2 3 or 4 wr for most of the yr. Pettigrew was bad and people underestimate the loss of Javid Best. The money is what it is but if the Lions let him walk all u will here is how cheap they are.

overrated? That’s amusing. as a lions fan I’ll take a 25 year old qb who already topped 5000 yards. We also had the most drops in the nfl. Most consider him to be between a10-15 (sometimes even lower) overall qb. So if a guy with those numbers and that ranking is overrated i’d like to see underrated.

Extend Stafford and drop this years cap hit. Then Big Ben gets his cap number dropped. Next thing you know Joes exclusive tag is down to $18M or so.

Matthew Stafford is the product of how fantasy football and a stat-oriented league drives up a players value. I watched a lot of the Detroit Lions and thought he hurt them a lot more than he helped.

Not having a running game sure doesn’t help a quarterback but he turned the ball over a lot and sure didn’t provide leadership. I would like to see how he does without Calvin Johnson, it sure helps being able to heave it up and say let the 6’5 guy get it.

Wow!!!!! I know you guys are used to losing but this kid gives us a chance, he’s technically only in his 3rd year with the injuries. Who the else would you rather have? Bradford? Sanchez? Josh freeman? Pat white? Mc coy? Weeden? tannehil? RG3 won’t last an entire career, Luck looks like the real deal, but come on!
Basically 2, 5000 yard seasons, 60 something TD, get rid of Scott linehan, never in my life seen a more predictable non creative play book in my life. I guarantee you if stafford hit free agency he would have teams lined up! He came here to an 0-16 team and stepped up to the challenge.

Stafford is a very good qb but not yet elite. He just turned 25 a few weeks ago so I’m pretty happy about having a good young qb around. And the reason for the extension is to free cap space…a lot like the Calvin deal last year.

You honestly would have been happy with a bunch of 2nd and 3rd round picks for Stafford? There was a lot wrong with the Lions last season, and Stafford didn’t play as well, but that’s crazy talk. Even the 1st pick in this years draft plus change wouldn’t be worth it.

Very disappointing news, especially after hearing what KC overpaid to trade for Alex Smith. For the rest of my life I’m going to wonder what the Chiefs would have been willing to give up for Stafford.

Stafford is only an elite QB in fantasy leagues. I’d take a clutch QB like Flacco or Eli Manning over him everyday of the week, including Sundays.

Let Stafford, Brees and Rodgers have their useless garbage time stats. The AFC QB’s know how to win games and championships.

Anyone who saw all of Stafford’s games in 2012 know what a disaster he was. Unfortunately most NFL teams only look at where the player was drafted and base their value on that. Stafford will get his long term deal and handcuff the Lions for the next 5 years.

For the rest of my life I’m going to wonder what the Chiefs would have been willing to give up for Stafford. Yikes. And the Lions want to give him many more tens of millions despite him not playing up to his previous pay scale or producing results?

I’m extremely frustrated with our long-term planning process for the 10th straight year. It will possibly be a few more decades before they will figure this stuff out and turn on the competitive juices in having a goal to win titles as opposed to having goals to keep likable guys around. The focus of mngmt in Detroit badly needs to change.

Hopefully an extension ends up bringing an end to the side arm slings…it was like his throwing motion on one third of his throws was completely different than the previous years…
