When the Packers released Jeff Saturday in February, it freed the center to sign a ceremonial contract with the Colts before he officially retires.
That’s just what he’s going to do. Colts owner Jim Irsay announced via Twitter Friday that Saturday will don his Colts jersey one more time at a press conference officially announcing his retirement from the NFL. There’s no date set for the event, which Irsay said will happen “soon.”
The return to the team he spent the first 13 seasons of his NFL career with won’t just last one day, however. Irsay also announced that Saturday will have a presence with the team after his retirement. What that role might be has been left unsaid, but his long, successful career with the team guarantees he’ll be greeted warmly by fans in whatever capacity winds up being his calling.
We wouldn’t be surprised if there are more national engagements in Saturday’s future as well. During the lockout, he proved to be an affable and thoughtful voice and we could always use more of those talking football on the airwaves.
