Report: Flacco’s deal is worth more than $120 million over six years

Getty Images

Agent Joe Linta wanted quarterback Joe Flacco to be the highest-paid quarterback in football.

On the surface, Flacco will be.

Per Adam Schefter of ESPN, the deal covers six year, with a payout in excess of $120 million.

It’s unclear how much the deal will exceed $120 million.  To surpass Drew Brees‘ $20 million annual average, it won’t need to exceed $120 million by much.

We proposed something along these lines last week — six years, and just over $120 million.

Still, the structure is unclear.  How big is the signing bonus?  How much is fully guaranteed?  How much is guaranteed for injury only?  What is the three-year payout?

Those answers may not come until the contract is signed and filed with the league.

If this is true, this is great news for the rest of the AFC North! The Ravens are going to be “cap-shackled” to a mediocre QB for the next 6 years! 🙂

  3. hogan19 says: Mar 1, 2013 8:07 PM

Does he plan on buying part of the ravens? Kid is gonna bankrupt the franchise!

  4. accipiterq says: Mar 1, 2013 8:08 PM

    Cripples them cap-wise for a QB that’s above-average. Not great. Above-average.

    Solid move guys.

  5. butthatmakestoomuchsense says: Mar 1, 2013 8:09 PM

We all like the salary cap because it prevents teams like Washington and Dallas to have an unfair advantage by being able to outspend the Kansas Citys of the world, right?

So why do we want Joe Flacco to give the Ravens an unfair advantage by taking a contact for less than he’s worth?

Eleven total articles, six of them on Flacco. Big whoop.

One & done Baltimore. The Ravens depth will be in the kiddie wading pool category. Welcome to salary cap hell.

You can’t put a price tag on a championship.

  13. kimbo71006 says: Mar 1, 2013 8:14 PM

NOBODY on the face of the earth is worth $120 million over six years for ANYTHING.

    Not even my favorite QB.

This will reveberate for years to come in bringing new young talent to the team.

Football has become all about the $$, instead of the sport.

  14. raiderlyfe510 says: Mar 1, 2013 8:15 PM

Way too much for a QB like Flacco.

  15. surfinbird1 says: Mar 1, 2013 8:16 PM

How much of that does Boldin get?

  16. blackngold4life says: Mar 1, 2013 8:17 PM

No QB is worth that..Mid season ppl were askin is Flacco the future for the Ratbirds..He’s fumble and Int prone..Now he’s gona be the highest paid QB in NFL history? Foreal? I guess that’s what a Superbowl can do for you. Congrats to Joe..scratchin my head at the Ratbirds Office.

  17. ravensdominate says: Mar 1, 2013 8:18 PM

Love how people are trash talking this deal. Super bowl MVPs get paid. The ravens had to do it and signing Flacco to a long term deal spreads the money out under the cap. The ravens are the best in the business. They don’t do bad business. Time to sign some others and repeat as WORLD CHAMPS.

  18. franktherat96 says: Mar 1, 2013 8:18 PM

Overpaid….when the ravens fall flat on their faces they will find out how much they overpaid.

  19. newtonfb22 says: Mar 1, 2013 8:19 PM

Brady, Rodgers, Brees should be worth 10x that then. What a joke this deal is.

  20. brewcrewfan54 says: Mar 1, 2013 8:19 PM

    He’s not worth it.

  21. spytdi says: Mar 1, 2013 8:20 PM

He’ll see maybe a third of that. Taxes, and later getting cut when he has no one to throw to.

  22. thebonus44 says: Mar 1, 2013 8:22 PM

What does this guy have to do to earn respect? One of the BEST performances in the playoffs in HISTORY, yet, he’s just a mediocre QB because he was CAM-CUFFED(tm) all year by a terrible OC? 15 Touchdowns 1 INT since Caldwell was installed. Zero interceptions during the playoffs. Super Bowl MVP. Can your quarterback claim those numbers? I didn’t think so. Move along.

  23. 49erdynasty says: Mar 1, 2013 8:22 PM

The Ravens better hope Flaccos contract contains another “refs will help us in the playoffs” clause.

  24. areyouseriousrofl says: Mar 1, 2013 8:22 PM

I love Drew Brees, but once his contract was announced I knew it was too much. HOWEVER, Brees is miles ahead of Flacco in terms of, well, everything. I just didn’t think there was an owner on the planet who would possibly consider Flacco being worth this amount of money.

Ravens defense will slowly deteriorate as they cant afford to keep anyone awesome, and the Ravens will ride off into obscurity, whilst paying JOE FLACCO $120 mil.

    LOL is all.

  25. pappyjoe69 says: Mar 1, 2013 8:22 PM

I wouldn’t call Flacco “mediocre” by any means. Although in my opinion he is not yet elite, he has earned his stripes and his numbers speak for themselves. In the last ten Super Bowls, he makes the 6th different one to win it. That ain’t bad company.

  26. kelvinmchale says: Mar 1, 2013 8:23 PM

He is so not worth that. Way overpaid. He has the media to thank, who fawn all over him for some reason. Maybe he gives them the time of day. He’s consistent, but barely above average for today’s NFL.

  27. ravenschick says: Mar 1, 2013 8:23 PM

Mediocre QB? Super Bowl MVP, more wins in first five years than any QB in NFL history, as many playoff wins as Peyton Manning in his entire career and more road playoff wins than any QB in NFL history. And oh yeah, as many Super Bowl rings and Manning and Brees.

Enjoy the cellar for a few more years, mikebrownfaux.

  28. thesportsguy52 says: Mar 1, 2013 8:23 PM

    Neither do I.

  29. mnjoemama says: Mar 1, 2013 8:24 PM

  32. bigboysmash says: Mar 1, 2013 8:29 PM

Last time i checked wins matter.

  33. ravenaintor says: Mar 1, 2013 8:30 PM

I’m VERY happy for this Joe Flacco. Now I can post all day everyday on boards about how being the highest paid QB makes you the greatest of all time! Funny thing is that this guy will be under a microscope for the rest of his days in Baltimore.

  34. wizahdry says: Mar 1, 2013 8:31 PM

I am not feeling sorry for the Ravens. They could have locked up Flacco a year or two ago for millions less but they took a hard stance and rolled the dice. I also give Flacco credit. He rejected a low ball offer last year because he felt he was worth more. He also rolled the dice and won a Super Bowl which is like lucky 7’s. The NFL is a sink or swim league…to the victor goes the spoils!

  35. baikes says: Mar 1, 2013 8:31 PM

“If this is true, this is great news for the rest of the AFC North! The Ravens are going to be “cap-shackled” to a mediocre QB for the next 6 years! ”

^^LMAO if thats what you gotta tell yourself to feel better.
I personally dont mind being shackled to a “mediocre” QB who swept the division, frequents the AFCCG, is better than both Weeden and Dalton, makes game winning drives in Heinz a habit and has zero to fear from a weak secondary and aging defensive front in Pittsburgh WHO btw, is garbage without their oft injured tank of a QB and cant fix any of these problems because they start every year 15 million over the cap lol.
Mediocre or not, Joe is more than enough to beat our 3 little underlings, we’re good.

(P.S.: dont be a lame steelers fan and start talking about the 70s, i know that’s yourr go to defense, fact of the matter is, even the Browns own you right now, lets talk after you figure out how to beat them lmao)

  36. deathonwings410 says: Mar 1, 2013 8:31 PM

  37. jvnyj says: Mar 1, 2013 8:32 PM

Rodgers is going to get like 250 million if he wants it. He will take less then moron Flacco did and win 2 or 3 more rings. I would be ok with the Jets giving Rodgers 250 though, lol.

  38. mhs8031 says: Mar 1, 2013 8:32 PM

Playing QB is easier with a good defense. Field position, time of posession. Flacco is above average. He is getting paid like Aaron Rogers–more than Tom Brady or Peyton Manning. His agent knew the Ravens were in a tough spot. He will not ever be considered a hall of famer or even remembered in 20 years. Talk about getting hot at the right time.

  39. st1llerz1 says: Mar 1, 2013 8:33 PM

    Just ROFLMFAO!!!

They’ll have to pay flaccid a boatload of cash in an upfront signing bonus to make this deal even resemble something salary cap friendly.

This is what a ridiculously misplayed ball in Denver’s thin air gets you.

Regular season – 22 tds vs. 10 interceptions. Middle of the road, which is exactly where burt falls in the NFL quarterback hierarchy.

ratbird fans will be regretting this deal by week 12 of next season.

The rest of the AFCN rejoices!

  44. coughlinsredcheeks says: Mar 1, 2013 8:41 PM

  45. lammy5555 says: Mar 1, 2013 8:44 PM

I’m waiting for the next article that says, “just kidding”.

Great deal, Baltimore. Locked in to an average QB at best.

  46. FinFan68 says: Mar 1, 2013 8:45 PM

  47. seattlerogueburner says: Mar 1, 2013 8:52 PM

That much to to hand it off to Ray Rice 78% of the time, and the other 22% toss it up and hope Torrey Smith or Jacoby Jones catches it? That’s bull crap.

  48. lowleadman says: Mar 1, 2013 8:52 PM

He’s a good qb but not a great one, and now with this obscene contract, he has hancuffed his own team by being paid disproportionately to the entire team payroll. Then again, he signed a deal that was offered to him. They wanted each other, they got it.

  49. seahawks80 says: Mar 1, 2013 8:53 PM

  50. realdealsteel says: Mar 1, 2013 8:56 PM

I’m glad Flacco has handcuffed this team for years to come. Now my Steelers will restore order in the division and start winning the division again.

Thanks Flacco. And as the injuries mount, I can sit back and watch the Ravens go nuclear meltdown.

  51. wherezwaldo says: Mar 1, 2013 8:57 PM

  52. steelwheeler says: Mar 1, 2013 8:58 PM

This smells of the ‘we have no fricking choice’ variety. Kind of like the Twins had to do with Joe Mauer. It’s a no win situation. You have to pay the him that kind of money because QBs that can win consistently are rare. Although, if you put Alex Smith, Tony Romo, Matt Stafford, or any other mid level QB talent, you would wind up in the same situation. The Def won most of those games the past 5 years. Ask any QB how easy it is to play when you have a Def like that carrying you. Joe Flacco isn’t terrible but he ain’t worth $120 mil either. The Ravens just had no choice.

  53. thebrownswillalwaysloose says: Mar 1, 2013 8:59 PM

Keep hating, haters! Funny to see all the jealousy from the steelers fans especially. Now that’s a franchise that is done. Browns, Bengals fans don’t even make me laugh. Come to think of it, if your not a Ravens fan and your hating your a jealous loser.

  57. cosanostra71 says: Mar 1, 2013 9:05 PM

Flacco is a pretty good QB, but he isn’t the best QB in the NFL (even the most diehard Ravens fan has to agree with that) so he probably shouldn’t be paid like he is. $20+ mill a year is a whole lot of money to pay. We’ll see how it works out for them.

  58. wakaflaccofive says: Mar 1, 2013 9:05 PM

Congrats Joe your totally worth it! This contract is only for what hes done the first 5 years of his career. Imagine how much larger the next one will be. Can’t wait for Joe and the Ravens to repeat in Joe’s home state in 2014. Go Ravens! Back to back!

  59. RavenzGunnerz says: Mar 1, 2013 9:05 PM

    He deserves it
    — Ravens fans

I am upset about this contract
    — Non-Ravens fans

why are you concerned about our team guys? don’t you have your own team to worry about.

ie. Tony Romos, Mark Sanchezes, Peyton Manning who always chokes in the Playoffs, etc…

  60. RavenzGunnerz says: Mar 1, 2013 9:07 PM

You gotta love people who are upset about this contract, feeling bad for the Ravens LOL.

Worry about your team, the Ravens will be ok, haters.

  61. rayray5227 says: Mar 1, 2013 9:09 PM

Let everyone hate on Flacco. I don’t think he’s bothered with $120 mil in the bank. Also, the guy posted a record tying performance in the playoffs and will only get better.

  62. rexloveshisfeet says: Mar 1, 2013 9:09 PM

He is a top ten QB in this league maybe even better. Brady was not a numbers guy when he first came in but all he did was win. It took Flacco a little longer to win the big game but he got that team to the playoffs year in/year out. And do not say its the defense. That defense has not been that dominant in a long time. I respect the man. He thought he was worth more than what they offered him last off season so he played the lottery with his future contract. And damn did it pay off. Super Bowl MVPS at the QB position do get paid generously I think you should all know this. You haters make me laugh. I’m not even a ravens fan. I am a giants fan and this is exactly
how you would talk about Eli after he one his 1st Super Bowl. Eli had to win his 2nd Super Bowl plus he had to call himself elite to shut up all the haters. I’m pretty sure Flacco called himself elite before the season but now we have to wait for his 2nd Super Bowl victory to shut up the peanut gallery.

It’s funny when a Browns fan thinks he should have an opinion about anything football related. At this point you should count this as a half Super Bowl victory because the Ravens use to be the Browns. Go Brandon Weeden!

  63. mbart94 says: Mar 1, 2013 9:10 PM

WAY too much…..Somewhere Trent Dilfer is saying how did this mediocre QB get this kind of deal? Should have tried for that deal Trent or perhaps your front office people were a little wiser than Baltimore.

  64. furious76 says: Mar 1, 2013 9:17 PM

This deal could easily go down as the biggest contract blunder very. Ravens didn’t leave enough room for other talent and Flacco is not top 15 in the league. Horrible signing, so glad I don’t root for the Ravens.

  65. noring4youstill says: Mar 1, 2013 9:18 PM

    What a crock of $@!?

  66. wakaflaccofive says: Mar 1, 2013 9:19 PM

Haters can go ahead and hate. Joe Flacco’s record speaks for itself. Most wins in first 5 years EVER. Most road playoff wins EVER. And the reason Baltimore won the super bowl is because of Flacco. Has your qb ever done those things? Didn’t think so, and it isn’t gonna happen.

  67. baikes says: Mar 1, 2013 9:21 PM

lol here come the dummies with the “heh has a great defense” line like Ravens D wasnt ranked in the bottom half and didnt struggle to stop anything between the 20s (so much for field position) lmao.

and then the whackjob steelers fans talking bout “restoring order”
with what? you guts went through 358439573975483275849325432 linemen this year and cant get under the cap to save your life lol

and who cares who the “best QB in the nfl” is…thats purely subjective anyway. Who’s the best QB? Tom Brady? Peyton Manning? Drew Brees? Eli Manning has as many rings as all three of them combined since 2005.
You can have the best QB in the league (whoever that is) i like winners.

  68. bengalskuta82 says: Mar 1, 2013 9:22 PM

Without 52 on the sidelines and without him on the team, the Ravens best days are over. This Ravens team will go to the dirt so fast..this is the Nfl. Things change very quickly; well unless you’re in cleveland. Coaches in the Nfl are paid to study film for months. Flacco is easy to prepare against..I wouldnt pay him that much

Swept the division. I remember him being dominated by an injury riddled Steeler D twice. Beaten by our 1000 year old 3rd stringer, and almost beat by a hobbled Leftwich. Thank you ravens brass! You just signed a career 85.o QB to a 20+ million/per year contract. Yep. Ozzie is the best.LOL

  71. mlandsjr says: Mar 1, 2013 9:30 PM

  72. ravenfan says: Mar 1, 2013 9:37 PM

A lot of people fail to realize just how valuable Flacco is. A durable reliable franchise QB. Never hurt and no problems off the field. During a reg. season he is not as good as Brady, Brees, Manning etc. But once Flacco gets into the playoffs(the only QB to do that the past 5 years btw), then Flacco becomes just as good if not better than all your so called elite QB’s. 3 out of 5 AFC Championchip app. and now a Super Bowl ring and MVP?? Great job Joe.

  73. badassleroybrown says: Mar 1, 2013 9:38 PM

To ALL those saying Flacco isnt worth it….Its TOO MUCH! to pay him….

    Think about it this way.

    1. Look how long (decades)Baltimore has been looking for at least an average QB prior to Flacco? Theyve been looking ever since they were known as the Cleveland Browns. And they get one that is above average who can potentially be great in Flacco…whom has helped them to the playoffs every year he’s been there QB.

    2. If you’re team was in the position the Cardinals, Chieif’s, Jaguars, Browns, Bills or even the Jets {all teams who need QB help and suck because they dont have a QB} Would you care if your team overpaid a little for Flacco???

And keep in mind his contract wont cripple the Ravens because after all this is the NFL and contract restructuring takes place all the time just look at what Brady did to create cap space for the Patriots.

It is TOO HARD to find a franchise QB who doesnt suck. And teams with good QB’s never let them go unless they have more than one.

Flacco wouldve got this money if he was a free agent for sure maybe even more.

(FYI Im not a Ravens fan, I’m a Giants fan in case anyone wants to claim BIAS) ;D

  74. bartlettruss says: Mar 1, 2013 9:38 PM

So much for the worship of Ozzie Newsome. The only smart move here was to franchise Flacco and see if he could do it again next year. Maybe not a SB win, but prove he’s truly an improved QB, then break the bank for him if he is…

I predict we’ll see the same Flacco we’ve always seen next year and there will be much weeping in Baltimore as it sinks in that they can no longer afford a supporting cast.

horrible move… I can think of about 5 qbs I would not trade him for…manning, brady, brees, luck, or a healthy rg3…. and others you could make a serious argument for. I want to see him win now that he has strangled the cap.

  77. pickledgringo says: Mar 1, 2013 9:41 PM

  89. sbaltimore says: Mar 1, 2013 10:03 PM

LOL @ Browns fans. Yeah, that Brandon Weeden is a world beater. What’s he now, like 29 or 30, in his second NFL season?

And Steelers fans? What was that…2 games that Ben lost all by himself last year, throwing stupid interceptions? Did you all enjoy watching the Super Bowl champs in your double wides? And HOW much over the cap are you guys now? With HOW many players to re-sign? Yeah. That’s what I thought.

And Cincy fans…if only your cheapskate owner would open up the coffers just a LITTLE bit. Y’all are just chokin on that $50M cap space, aren’t ya? All dressed up, and nowhere to go. Tsk. Tsk.

Yeah. That AFC North looks really dicey this year, doesn’t it? Come on…..September!!!

  90. stikolaboloni says: Mar 1, 2013 10:12 PM

They’ll just restructure his deal before it ever gets to the 3rd year. I’ll put the odds that Joe Flacco ever sees that whole $20 million about the same as Lance Armstrong ever winning the Tour de France again

  91. niz10rav55 says: Mar 1, 2013 10:18 PM

Hey just won a superbowl…and looked darn good doing it…how can anyone hate on him, truth is your qb and your team was not good enough, and ours was. 5 straight playoffs by the way. I think they know what they doin in Bmore. Hate on

  94. peopletrains says: Mar 1, 2013 10:32 PM

That’s a lot of money for a QB that isn’t elite.

  95. audge86 says: Mar 1, 2013 10:32 PM

    Huge mistake

Look at how teams are learning their lessons the hard way. Roethlisberger has to restructure. Brady has restructured repeatedly, then taken a pay cut. Brees is going to count for $27 mill against the cap soon.

The restructuring shows that these deals are not affordable. Yeah, the cap hit this year might not be that large if they structure it that way. But the money has to hit the cap eventually and the cap is not going to jump by that much in 6 years.

This is going to hurt. They’re not going to be able to resign Torrey Smith when his contract comes up. Say bye to an elite defense.

Just way too much money. But I’m happy cause I’m not a Ravens fan lol.

  96. lennydpocketqb says: Mar 1, 2013 10:43 PM

Kudos to Flacco. I’m always happy to see a player get p-a-i-d.

  97. jmblosser82 says: Mar 1, 2013 10:43 PM

The ravens barely beat the browns, barely beat Byron, lost to Batch, and split with the bungles(if I remember right), and you ratbird fans talk about owning the north. Newsflash, Rice, Jones, Smith, Boldin bailed him out on offense and the def came together at the end of the season…his season stats puts him in the middle of the pack and he will be judged harshly when he struggles, and he will struggle. Yea steelers have cap issues right now too but they will bounce back before the ravens. Baltimore enjoy your overpaid middle of the pack QB and a shell of a defense.

    Hey there …where to start.
    1. He didn’t seep the division last year
    2. The garbage team you refer to beat the ravens and flacco IN BALTIMORE with a nearly 40 year old 3rd string QB
    3. The steelers are not 15 million over the cap.
Other than missing out on numerous key facts …. Great post dipstick

  100. 4thqtrsaint says: Mar 1, 2013 10:47 PM

I honestly don’t care one way or the other. Its cool he got what he wanted. I do think he’s a good QB, but not that good. But if they’re willing to pay, that’s cool too.

But for the Flacco defenders out there, I will say you need to drop the “most wins” arguments. Tells you nothing about how good a QB really is. It tells you how good of a team he is on. He’s responsible for his share, but he’s not the entire reason by a stretch.

  101. firegoodell says: Mar 1, 2013 10:47 PM

That’s the league now though, you have to overpay a good, not great, qb. Or else. But, this deal could be an anchor on the franchise. Does anyone really think Flacco is an elite, top 3 qb?

  115. tomtravis76 says: Mar 1, 2013 11:43 PM

This year it’s Flacco, next season another QB will get a record breaking deal and the season after that and so on. QB’s will restructure the deal to help get players on the roster.

Were the Ravens really going to play hardball with Joe? Smart move to pay the man. Who else were they going to get to play QB? Let the guy walk? Real easy for fans of the teams who don’t have QB’s with Lombardis to say he is average. Every year Joe has been the QB they have gone to the playoffs, as fans you want your team to atleast be in contention and he has done that as the QB.

It is always nice to come on here and see that there are so many cap experts and potential NFL GMs. You can surely bet on it that Ozzie just said screw the franchise we have no idea how to build a team, we have no idea how to work the cap, give Joe all the money. Ozzie knows how to spend Steves money to put a contender on the field each season. The proven track record speaks for itself.

  121. johntonioholmes says: Mar 1, 2013 11:59 PM

Best case scenario. I happy for Joe; I really am. But I’d be livid if I was a Ravens fan.

Be honest; how much is 20 tds and a sub 60% completion percentage really worth? 2 fluke passes made his post season, not to mention a P.I. call that could have gone either way (whether you agree with the call or not, you have to admit that it could have gone either way.)

Flacco has never bother me as much as his fans. But as a fan of a rival team, this is legitimately the best this that could have happened. Now, they be squeezed for cap room in the future. And let’ face it: Flacco isn’t a game breaker. He’s good because he won’t lose the games for you (which is more than most qbs–including some of the elite ones–can say) but he doesn’t win them for you either.

Congrats to Joe, though. I extend my condolences to Ravens fans.

  122. malab377 says: Mar 1, 2013 11:59 PM

Flacco won the Superbowl… won many, many games… won a playoff game every year… ok…

Now, can we talk about the TEAM behind Flacco? You know, the team with all those players who need to sign a new contract but will not because now the Ravens have no more money for them?

I bet the Ravens will miss the playoffs next year. Not even close for a wild card.

  123. diggy1 says: Mar 2, 2013 12:01 AM

Joe Flacco has never been the reason they lost any playoff games and has been more of why they have won all the playoff games as well as a Superbowl since he’s was drafted. With that said, with this contract, Joe cannot be the QB that has showed up in many regular season games in the same time frame and lost games performing at a level that is all the reason people still think he is just an above average Qb.

I think he will actually earn his money. Never in my lifetime can I remember, a QB that consistently has performed in the playoffs just simply become a below average QB. So the worse you get is what you have. A very competitive football team that can make the playoffs and get it done. That is unless Ozzie suddenly forgets how to draft…which I don’t think is gonna happen.

  124. vikinganswer says: Mar 2, 2013 12:02 AM

  127. baaaam says: Mar 2, 2013 12:11 AM

  128. themackstrong says: Mar 2, 2013 12:41 AM

Wow Flacco just crippled the team. I know Super Bowl is the goal and he took them there and helped win it. But look at his seasons, I can think of anyone more inconsistent maybe Romo. 20 million on a Brady, Brees or Manning because they can put a team on their back. Flacco needs Rice/Peirce to be moving the chains to give him a chance at those deep balls when the box is loaded. The talent will be depleted and I don’t see a run like this year happening in the next 6 years because the division they play in is tight as can be even Browns have young core.

  129. haywoodyablome says: Mar 2, 2013 12:45 AM

If Burt is getting $120 million, I wonder how much Ernie will get?!

  130. monkeyhateclean says: Mar 2, 2013 12:46 AM

Unlike the fine citizens of Baltimore, I’ll never have to pay a dime to watch any/all Ravens games, so I’m glad Flacco got so overpaid. The only way this deal could be better for non-Raven NFL fans is if the Ravens made this a guaranteed contract. Forced to pay this guy for the next 6 years, regardless. It would probably bankrupt one of the few profitable ventures in a city that is already a Mad Max-esque hellscape.

Flacco fits the comparison of a marginal QB on a good team as fellow Raven champ, Trent Dilfer. Not even Flacco’s mother could reasonably argue that Joe is a top ten QB right now, so what better time to hold the team hostage?

  131. steel420 says: Mar 2, 2013 12:47 AM

  132. blackngold4life says: Mar 2, 2013 12:53 AM

  133. cspsrbums says: Mar 2, 2013 12:58 AM

Not a Ravin fan at all but you steeler fans are clowns you team is old falling apart with and old broken down quarterback you will fall to the bottom of the division for years to come Ozzie is one of if not the best GM out there right now don’t under estimate his decisions .He still haze a franchise tag use. So steeledr fans go worry about where you are going to be for the next few years.

  134. derek2957 says: Mar 2, 2013 12:58 AM

Looks like the deal will have a 2nd year option bonus for year 6. Most of the 6 year deals do. This would spread the cap impact for that bonus over years 2-6 instead of from year 1-6. With the salary cap expected to climb at least slightly more than this year in 2014, the deal could wind up being not quite so bad, alot of these deals contain not likely to be achieved incentives just to boost the players ego.

  135. sandy102270 says: Mar 2, 2013 1:54 AM

I find it unbelievably amusing that the AFC North fans think a contract that hasn’t even been officially announced yet is a bad deal.

Especially since the rest of the division has one of:

    1. an aging roster with limited talent and a cap issue so bad that they restructure the same players every year, further perpetuating the cycle

    2. an owner so cheap that he wouldn’t use any of his precious cap space even if he could get Montana, Rice, and Smith in their primes at vet minimum salaries, despite not winning a single playoff game in a generation

    3. a rookie 1st round QB that is already older than Flacco (who they are already looking to replace), and an owner whose first act after purchasing the team was to move out of state

But Baltimore is the franchise that exhibits poor organizational structure and decision making regarding personnel.

  136. delmonte55 says: Mar 2, 2013 2:01 AM

There’s a rule of thumb in NFL circles regarding new contracts. If the numbers aren’t leaked within the first 24 hours, the player didn’t get what the player wanted to get.
Whoops better left letting the other guys report and you just tell us what they sain.

Trent Dilfer and Brad Johnson won the Super Bowl too.

Flacco had a great post season, but not enough to be paid like Drew Brees, Peyton, or heck, even Eli

  141. neilanblomi says: Mar 2, 2013 4:47 AM

Being 27, winning a playoff game every season of your career, and then throwing 11tds and 0 ints in a superbowl mvp playoffs goes a long way.

The salary cap isn’t a big deal like it used to be 10 years ago. Every team with “cap trouble” can restructure some guys, cut some dead weight, and not pay rookies until year 4 or 5 of their NFL career. Half the NFL will have to “over pay” guys just to get to the required amount of the cap they have to spend.

If the Ravens didn’t pay Flacco who exactly was going to be the QB next year? How would it go over if they missed the playoffs (which never happened in Flacco’s career) due to bad QB play.

Flacco earned this contract by his play on the field, and upping the anti in the bigger games…deal with it.

  142. cpo187 says: Mar 2, 2013 5:14 AM

  144. bigjdve says: Mar 2, 2013 7:10 AM

Flacco was paid alot of money. Is he worth it, depends on the people that are paying him. Ozzie feels that he is, then that makes him worth it, at least for now.

It will remain to be seen if he gets a return on his investment. The unfortunate part is that while you would like to believe that players are paid on what they will do, they are often paid on what they did.

I just hope they are able to keep Boldin as he is a BIG reason as to why Flacco was able to get this contract.

Good for Joe for getting this deal. Why hate on someone that got what he thought he was worth?

Would you rather have Matt stafford who throws for 4000 yards and 31 td’s and goes 4-12. Don’t think so. He holds several nfl records but was handcuffed by Cameron. Also he’s a dropped pass away from back to Back superbowls and a dynasty tag. He did this despite a bottom tier defense

  150. jiggy3198 says: Mar 2, 2013 8:27 AM

One question when he’s being paid as franchise it was 19.6 million pretty close to 20 if you ask me. So how is he highest paid when others are making more. Also he will restructure in couple of years like everyone else.

  151. csilojohnson says: Mar 2, 2013 8:30 AM

Lol at the delusional Ravens fans that think Flacco owns anything but the Steelers back up qbs. That is questionable as well. The Ravens didn’t sweep the AFCN. Are we all forgetting it took 4 years of Flacco single handedly losing playoff games to finnaly get to the big game? Yayy 2 rings. Flacco had a great run this year. Hardly the model of consistensy though.

  152. keylimelight says: Mar 2, 2013 8:44 AM

Flacco’s performance coming down the stretch and in the SB was stellar and I was pulling for him to get fat pay, but $120 million!!?!

It’s been mentioned earlier in this thread, and I agree, that the teams whose QBs receive this kind of money, strap their club’s cap space.

Unless Flacco (or any QB) is a central reason the team is winning, this will not only create cap problems, but will also breed resentment among teammates and will not translate into future success.

I’ll say it again…I’m not a Flacco or Baltimore hater, but this is a huge mistake. Last night I posted that I sat back and thought “20 million for FLACCO? Really?” That’s my honest reaction. He throws a great deep ball and manages the game well. But over $20m a year? Come on. For that kind of money I’d have let him test the market or at least risked the non-exclusive tag. This isn’t Peyton Manning or Tom Brady we’re talking about here. This isn’t Aaron Rodgers.

  156. bengalskuta82 says: Mar 2, 2013 9:00 AM

Hmm. I think the Ravens are gonna get Flacco to sign the deal and then when next season rolls around and the Ravens start having cap problems, I can see Ozzie calling Flacco to reconstruct the deal. The Ravens are being smart here. This is just to get Flacco to sign. Its a Fluko Deal

  157. sbaltimore says: Mar 2, 2013 9:01 AM

  158. rtant2013 says: Mar 2, 2013 9:08 AM

It won’t last long, Aaron Riders just started salivating from the mouth. He’s greedy and will want more then this BUT atleast he deserves it. I mean a large portion of the season everyone was talking about how bad Flacco was and now he’s the highest paid qb ha that’s laughable when the team starting losing in the second half of the season and were getting closer and closer to not even making the playoffs, but yeah he deserves that 120 mill right? Now how are they going to resign half of their team that will be leaving now because they don’t have the cap to resign them all? Let’s see how good they look next year, my guess is they don’t make the playoffs, and the Bengals win the division. And no I’m not a Bengels fan, they’re starting to be a very respectable team though.

Joe had an epic run last year but you know in your heart you just got taken like a chump and this deal is all bad.

  161. sbaltimore says: Mar 2, 2013 9:46 AM

I guess you don’t watch too many Ravens games, do you? The Ravens record w/o Ray was actually better. But hey…don’t let facts get in the way. Ray was done. He could stop the run but he couldn’t cover TEs or WRs over the middle. He was more of an emotional leader was all.

And “I Can’t Tackle To Save My Life And My Gambles Keep Burning My CBs” Ed Reed…it was like having 10 D players on the field.

    But thanks for…

What would Flacco be without Ray Rice? Or their D? (which likely won’t be as good this coming season or next).
You give $20m to a QB that can take a mediocre team and make them great, not one that benefits so much from those around him.
Brees, Peyton Manning, Brady etc. Not Flacco. He isn’t worth half that and they will figure that out if there are injuries to people like Rice or their D doesn’t play well.

Move along.

Take a look at Brees numbers during the SuperBowl run and since, with the exception of last season record breaking numbers continue. (Heck he threw for over 5,000 yards last year with a 7-9 season) Lets see what old Joe does the next few seasons?

This will go down as a huge mistake.

There’s only one other safety in the league who would have misplayed that pass in Denver and he happens to be playing for San Fran.

Both of those balls were underthrown.

Underthrown passes are BAD passes, except when you get lucky.

Flacco got lucky. Those were awful passes; there’s no debating that. They hung in the air forever, and Jones had to stop running and wait for the ball to get to him both times.

I’m happy that he got this contract. I think it’s hilarious because 11 tds with 0 ints is looks impressive until you see how he actually played. His receivers were making stellar catches for him. He looked above average; he wasn’t unstoppable like Brees was in his post-season. Just look at some of those catches that Boldin made for him. Phenomenal.

Wow-this is such a waste of cap space and $$. I guarantee the Ravens will NEVER win another SuperBowl with all this $$ eating up their cap space for an average QB.

Uhm…you are aware that the 31 points the Ravens D gave up in the super bowl was the HIGHEST amount of points any team has ever given up and WON a super bowl, right? The Ravens D has been on the decline for years now. They did NOT carry the Ravens to this super bowl. They came up with some clutch plays (some might even say penalties) in this super bowl, but to imply that they carried the team in 2012 is just plain wrong.
