Report: Ravens, Flacco strike a deal

AFC Championship - Baltimore Ravens v New England Patriots Getty Images

The Ravens opted not to gamble, again.

Months after letting quarterback Joe Flacco play out the final year of his rookie contract, the Ravens won’t use the franchise tag on their franchise quarterback.

Jay Glazer of FOX reports that the Ravens and Flacco have worked out a long-term deal.  Negotiations began only one week ago.

Terms aren’t yet known.  Let the chase for the info begin.

The completion of a new contract allows the Ravens to not risk using the non-exclusive tag on Flacco, which would have permitted a team like, say, the Browns to swoop in and try to sign him to an offer sheet the Ravens wouldn’t or couldn’t have matched.

Leverage,it really can do wonders for you

  2. skoobyfl says: Mar 1, 2013 6:32 PM

Not a huge suprise, this gives them a chance to tag somebody as well now & get their financial house in order.

  3. ravenator says: Mar 1, 2013 6:33 PM

Victory! Joe Flacco is a Raven. Many more years of playoff domination will ensue

  4. bobonmycob says: Mar 1, 2013 6:34 PM

LOL goodluck Ravens with that average overpaid quarterback. hahaha from the rest of the league.

  5. raqaiw says: Mar 1, 2013 6:34 PM

Love or hate the Ravens,no one hate Ozzie Newsome.
If dude wasn’t already a HOFer as a player,he’d be one as a GM. That’s rare.

  6. idonthavethebloodyoucrave says: Mar 1, 2013 6:35 PM

Hopefully his contract didn’t price the team out of affording the all the other players that made Joe look good.

He should also send a, “Thank you” card to that horrid Niners secondary.

  7. dontstabmeray says: Mar 1, 2013 6:35 PM

And Steeler Nation rejoices. Yup, the same guy who couldn’t beat 38 year old 3rd stringer Charlie Batch.

  8. heyitsmejosh says: Mar 1, 2013 6:36 PM

this is great for the rest of the league.. the ravens have now locked up a so so QB for a lot of money for a long period of time.

  9. ravenator says: Mar 1, 2013 6:37 PM

Oz can use the tag on Kruger or Reed now and go get Ellerbe signed. What a genius.

  10. ravensallday2012 says: Mar 1, 2013 6:38 PM

That’s what happens when u have the best front office. Things get done

  11. clownsfan says: Mar 1, 2013 6:38 PM

Browns were NEVER going to get him.

  12. mrlaloosh says: Mar 1, 2013 6:39 PM

Should be highest paid player in NFL.

  13. nineroutsider says: Mar 1, 2013 6:42 PM

Congrats to Flacco; he carved everyone up in the playoffs including my boys. He put up Montana stats.

He has been underrated for a while, but all of the casual fans that pretend they know football will claim to laugh about this signing when the actual joke is probably their team.

  14. cromags says: Mar 1, 2013 6:42 PM

Gonna be tougher for you guys to come up with your daily filler news posts now.

  15. charlesmelton says: Mar 1, 2013 6:44 PM

If it is something like $18M a year for 6 years with $70 M guaranteed that makes me happy as a fan.

  16. tramonisland says: Mar 1, 2013 6:44 PM

Wow. Well goodbye to 1/6 of the ravens salary cap for the next 6 years. This is not gonna be a Brady friendly contract.

  17. RavenzGunnerz says: Mar 1, 2013 6:48 PM

16.5mil for 5 years, anything above that… rip off.

But, with Alex Smith out of the market, who else could the Ravens really get?

  18. rockthered1286 says: Mar 1, 2013 6:49 PM

Who is surprised here? Joe earned his payday and he got it. NOW the Ravens can afford to resign Ellerbe, extend Q, pick up a NT and continue owning the AFCNORTH.

  19. bigdaddydooko says: Mar 1, 2013 6:54 PM

Sweet. Big cap hit for a highly inconsistent QB. Ravens should be in the same boat as the steelers in a couple years.

  20. wryly1 says: Mar 1, 2013 6:57 PM

In addition to losing veteran leaders Ray Lewis and Matt Birk, Ravens have a dozen UFA’s, at least half of whom are starters. They still have a lot of work to do in order to hold it together in 2013.

  21. cmarsh64 says: Mar 1, 2013 6:57 PM

Say what you want about Flacco, but he knows how to win in the Playoffs and now the Superbowl. His greatest will be measured by how many he gets after this one.Not a Ravens fan but respect the player.

  22. scoobies05 says: Mar 1, 2013 6:58 PM

is that hahahah from the rest of the league that didnt win the superbowl. and yet we overcame losing to batch and won it all. so congrats to joe and the ravens

  23. ravenator says: Mar 1, 2013 6:59 PM

You haters dont even know the terms. Meanwhile one team signs and manages the franchise credit card appropriately consistently competing and winning while the other team restructures, and restructures, and restructures, and…oh wait, you guessed it, restructures, yet you clap that approach not realizing the repo man is coming for your franchise and hell be there for at least a decade continuously making it impossible for your team to compete. Now, I’m going to go celebrate my front office’s capabilities of running a sound ship. Cheers!

  24. patsdominate says: Mar 1, 2013 7:00 PM

Ravens won’t make the playoffs this year ….. Book it !

  25. Just a Fan says: Mar 1, 2013 7:01 PM

Tag Paul Kruger? Ravenator your even more of an idiot then usual! Tagging Ed Reed is even more ridiculous! A mid round offer at best for Kruger.Kruger is about as good as Bart Scott. And let Reed explore free agency. Reed will give you a discount to come back. Why waste money on those guys when you just added a ton with the Flacco deal? You better let Ozzie handle your team, you Troll fans don’t have a clue!

  26. ravensfansc says: Mar 1, 2013 7:03 PM

Thank god. No chance of any disputes or any squabbles.

But you don’t, you baltimore fans are sipping your own kool aid.

  28. ravenmuscle says: Mar 1, 2013 7:04 PM

The AFC NORTH is OURS for the NEXT TEN years.

And for all you haha’s…he might be average to you but we’re holding the Lombardi and Joe got us there and will KEEP getting us there.

AND…there are still about 25 teams in the NFL that have NO franchise quarterback. AND if you don’t have that franchise quarterback….you are dogmeat in this league.

And one last point for you AVERAGE yo yos…he outplayed Peyton Manning…Eli Manning….Tom Brady and Andrew Luck this year. Joe will only keep getting better.. under Jim Caldwell.

  29. greatestgamensports says: Mar 1, 2013 7:05 PM

Lmao at some of you people who thinks he should be paid elite $$$. He is an average QB at best plain and simple

  30. crownofthehelmet says: Mar 1, 2013 7:07 PM

Say what you want ravenator, but your front office just spent too much money on an average QB.

  31. bobonmycob says: Mar 1, 2013 7:08 PM

No that hahaha is from an unbiased fan that notices how ignorant and inefficient your front office actually is. All those star studded players and yet you will lose most of them due to idiotic contracts. But thank you for asking!

  32. reed20fence says: Mar 1, 2013 7:08 PM

Lord Bless the Ravens and Joe Flacco. Now let’s play some football!

  33. johninthewest says: Mar 1, 2013 7:14 PM

Sorry Ravens followers but Flacco is not an elite QB. Wait and see in 2013.

  34. coughlinsredcheeks says: Mar 1, 2013 7:15 PM

Not to worry, Flacco has proven that he can win games on a consistent basis without a good defense or good running game… Oh wait, 4 games=/=consistent basis

  35. bmore says: Mar 1, 2013 7:17 PM

You should only tag a player who is outperforming the tag number. Reed and Kruger do not match that. We couldn’t afford it anyway. My guess is FLACCO got $21m per year with about a $13m first year cap hit.

  36. Cereal says: Mar 1, 2013 7:22 PM

    Man, these guys could repeat

  37. sbaltimore says: Mar 1, 2013 7:48 PM

    Great move.

(I just love all the haters’ comments. You folks don’t even have the first clue what you’re talking about. Now that Cam Cameron is ancient history and Joe is signed to a long term deal (most likely a cap friendly deal, or at least a more cap friendly deal than a franchise tag), the Ravens are set to continue their domination of the AFC North. Meanwhile, the Steelers are still trying to get out from under their cap hell. Good luck with that. The Bengals are still cheap. And the Browns are still…the Browns.)

  38. Nofoolnodrool says: Mar 1, 2013 7:54 PM

This steeler fan is very glad you signed Joe Flaccid to a long term deal.. Now the injury watch begins, you can’t afford him to get hurt and Taylor is untested….can’t wait… Joe is now a Pollard type hit away from making the ravens also rans….can’t wait maybe back to tee shirt boys..close but choking at the end as usual..luck runs out.

  39. andylucksneck says: Mar 1, 2013 8:05 PM

The ravens didn’t out perform Denver. The broncos were one bone headed play away from a playoff win. The fans out there that think flacco out played the field in the playoffs are purely delusional.

  40. scoobies05 says: Mar 1, 2013 8:17 PM

Joe has never missed a game in his career. Ravens come off of a super bowl win and you’re best insult is “the ravens backup qb sucks” HA! Pittsburgh fans may be in the business of relying on backups, we have one that doesn’t go out riding motorcycles without a helmet. Oh and yeah they sure choked in the end, idiot.

Idiot, Joe has one SB victory, but Ben has three SB appearances. Joe is now one Pollard type hit from done…nervous. Your backup is a joke and once little Ray ( the nice one) is done so are you….lol thinking in the short term, which is the only history you believe in, you are solid, but one dirty raven type hit and Joe is done… Can’t wait

The Super Bowl says you were hot at the right time and you deserved it. But being the champ you have to act like one not a Whinny sniveling child whimpering because the big boys dissed your team. Please, you need to get some ba–s . The steelers have been taking crap for years….if you win you are a target…just like Joes knees…nervous?

  44. rottenbellybutton says: Mar 1, 2013 9:03 PM

Once again “nofool” is exposed as the clown he truly is. Don’t you wish the stillers were on the ravens level? You’ll be lookin up at that team till you no longer exist. Atleast yinz got 6 Lombardis to reminisce about. Ray Lewis is a LEGEND!

  45. rottenbellybutton says: Mar 1, 2013 9:34 PM

Fool: Can’t wait till baby ben receives a REAL injury and can no longer take the field. You like to mention Pollard but why not Kimo’s hit on Palmer. Does it make your precious franchise look dirty?

  46. blakep0025 says: Mar 1, 2013 9:40 PM

Ravens fans just got screwed by their own GM. No one player is worth 20% of salary cap.

    Sincerely,
Saints fan who has to deal with Bree’s $25-$30 mill cap hit next 3 years and a mediocre team around him.

  47. nickster31 says: Mar 1, 2013 9:54 PM

Steelers on the Ravens level? Seriously? Flacco was so average the great Ozzy didnt even want to extend him last year. Flacco ix a GOOD Qb, but dont think he is now going to be Tom Brady when he knew the other teams defense.

Look, Flacco is a GOOD player, above average but not great. And he is going to cost you $20illion per year. Sorry, he isnt worth it.

Now, lets see the lind of damage he is to this years cap.

Welcome to cap hell Ravens…..6years@ 20.6 AVG. for 1 player! That is 1/6th of the entire salary for the whole team. Enjoy your time on top….it won’t last long! Greeeeeeedy Joe

My my are we sensitive ? Put on your big boy pants there champ…I mean chump..
I would never wish to see the steelers sink to the ravens level and know they never will. But you enjoy your brief time in the sun because this year you’ll be back to dreary old charm city always close but not a winner….aka the tee shirt boys.

  52. ravenswillalwaysbeourbitch says: Mar 2, 2013 9:44 AM

This is great, Crackhoe has just put himself in last place in the north… They will be lucky to be a 500 team this year. They now don’t have a felon playing Tony Robbins (Gay Ray).. Oh I forgot that’s normal in Baltimore…… (The armpit of the earth)…… Enjoy..
