FIRST: Where did you get your numbers from? who said he was 1/6 of the cap? that number is made up his cap is as low as 7 million this year.

Drew Brees and Joe Flacco switch. Joe Flacco was Saints QB last year and Brees Ravens QB. Odds are exceptionally high thta the Ravens season goes just about the same, likely better with Brees. The Saints with Flacco on the other hand would be drafting Luke Joeckel right now.

That’s why Joe Flacco isn’t worth it. At 1/6th of the cap he doesn’t provide you with 1/6th the value. Flacco needs a good to great team around him to win. Brees could have the NFLs 26th ranked D and be a legit Super Bowl contender. It’s going to be even worse value when the Ravens can’t afford talent around Flacco. And why would Ellerby or anyone else take less than they’re worth? Flacco sure didn’t…

Welcome to the $18-$20 million, team killing, qb club. You know the one I am talking about. The one that claims Manning, Brady, Stafford, Brees,Rodgers, R etc… as members. The one that makes teams cut their other high priced defensive stars to stay under the cap. It will be interesting to see if Ozzie will be able to put a team on the field that will keep Flacco’s streak of playoff runs without the players that helped make it happen these last 5 years.

In a QB league…quarterbacks are going to demand a bulk of the salary cap. I hope you also noticed that 4 or the 5 QBs you listed have won at least 1 Superbowl.

Geesh you people are the most irrational anti capitalistic bunch I know. QBs don’t “make” their employee do anything. The employer has a choice I can either pay this superstar the market rate for a star QB or roll the dice on a rookie or any free agent out there. What makes the whining of folks like you even more unbearable is that the market value for Super star QBs is surpressed by the CBA mechanisms of a salary cap and most importantly the Franchise tag. If Flacco or Brees were true free agents without the Franchise hanging over their head a team out there would have exceeded their final contract numbers.

Why is it do you think over the past 12 years or so the only true Star QBs to hit the Free agent market without being franchised were Peyton Manning and Drew Brees and that was only because 1 was injured and the other was injured and had a hot young QB (Philip Rivers) management was itching to start.

7. Most wins in the first 5 seasons
8. 1st QB to have a QB rating over 100 in 4 playoff games in playoff
9. Most TDs in a postseason

Wonder if he would feel overpaid if he has a less than stellar year and they miss the playoffs. He is a good QB but I don’t think he is the best. Looking at the arguments for paying him like this, you find a lot of “team” stats rather than individual stats. This year’s playoffs is the aberration not the norm.

Except they’ve made the AFC Title game 3 times in 5 years, he’s won road playoff games every year since coming into the league and the Ravens have had consistently the best defenses of the past decade, but haven’t won squat. Enter Joe Flacco who won them a Super Bowl.

If you think that this was an aberration, you must be watching football with your eyes closed. When Joe got free from Cam Cameron and demanded to sling it his way (see AFC Title game, 2nd half) he was great.

He’s got the most wins by any quarterback in his first 5 years. You can have your fantasy football Madden stats, but at the end of the day, none of that matters. The only thing that matters is the W, and Flacco brought home the biggest W this past year.

I hope he goes and earns this. I wonder what happens though if Flacco say throws for 21 TDs, 17 INTs and the Ravens go 7-9 with him averaging 190 yards passing per game. Will he be willing to restructure his deal to be paid what he is worth? Let’s hope that does not happen but I must say I believe the Ravens would have been smart to franchise him and see what he does this year with aim to have a new deal mid-season after they see what kind of year he is having. The Ravens will lose a lot of players so we are going to find out how much of their Super Bowl and regular season is worth crediting him with and how much should we credit him for their 2013 regular season?

And lets say Flacco passes for 5000 yards, 40+ tds, and leads the Ravens to a couple more Super Bowls will the Ravens be willing to increase his contract to match what will then be a probably higher going rate for top QBs? It cuts both ways you know.

Secondly,

The worst thing for the Ravens this year would have been if they had to Franchise Flacco since that salary will immediately count $14+ or $19+ million against the cap where as last year I believe Flacco’s cap hit was around $6 million. By signing a long term contract he gets a more than likely huge up front signing and roster bonuses that don’t count fully against the cap. I’m willing to bet anyone on here that Flacco’s cap numbers for this up comming season will be significantly lower than the franchise tag.

I’m amazed at all the doom and gloom about the cap when no one even knows how this contract is structured.

For the one millionth time….Ozzie Newsome has been doing a phenomenal job ever since he took over as GM of the Ravens….I think he has earned more than the benefit of the doubt on how he runs the franchise.
