APThe first entry in today’s version of Beat the Clock is the Dolphins, who have placed the franchise tag on defensive tackle Randy Starks, according to multiple reports.
Starks’ tag will cost them a one-year deal worth $8.45 million, but gives them time to continue working on a long-term deal.
That’s obviously what he’s hoping for, as he expressed his frustrations via Twitter.
It also means that wide receiver Brian Hartline, cornerback Sean Smith and left tackle Jake Long are clear to enter the free agency market March 12, absent a new deal with the Dolphins prior to that point. A glut of tackle options might depress Long’s market, but he should still find a lucrative deal.

cant you be more original than ‘glut of tackles,’ or is that just the buzz word that the talking heads are supposed to push this time?
‘depth at the tackle position?’
Also stop censoring people. I posted twice on the read option article with nothing in either post that violated the ToS. Im sick of you fools pushing your ideas and censoring anyone who disagrees. Let the people post.
Good move. He’s Definately the free agent to keep. Long, Hartline & Smith are replaceable.
Good move re Starks.
Long not worth anything north of $8 mil.
Hartline is keeper at $5 mil or under.
Smith not more than $7.5 mil. If any higher his contract should have a clause costing him $500K per dropped interception.
Hoping to see Hartline sign a reasonable deal but he along with Smith and Long will need to actually see the options come the 12th.
Glad to see him back! I really thought they were going to stash the money and move Odrick over.
Congrats. Welcome back to the Dolphins.
Now if Miami can draft or pick up a stud Pass Rusher for the right side to go along with Cam Wake, Paul Soliai and Randy Starks they will have one of the Best Def Lines in Football.
Looking forward to free agency and the draft. It’s high time the Fins start mattering again.
Can’t believe I agree with CB13.
Go get Hartline, Brownies!
They were losing Tony McDaniel as well so this is a sound move.
I wonder if the Patriots would make a move on Hartline?
$11 mil for a left tackle that is so broken down that he cant even bodyguard at a chucky cheese? $9 mil for a corner that cant even catch a cold sitting naked in the snow? These two dont want to win.. Good riddance
