When is the last time Colbert made a good draft pick? K.O. is better than DeCastro and Ozzie got him a round later. Same story with Mendenhall and Rice. Ozzie also got guys like Art Jones and Pernell McPhee in the later rounds, while Colbert blew first rounders on Ziggy Hood and Cameron Heyward.

no….the steelers overpay for every one else and when they get old and slow they are stuck in cap hell and struggle to finish at 500. the ravens dont restructure and work out cap friendly contracts. will joe restructure in 3 years…probably. but unlike the steelers they wont be overpaying for fat linebackers…thats why the ravens are great

I heard somewhere that the cap is projected to take a big leap in a couple of years from now when the new TV rights are negotiated. Can’t remember if it was 2015 or 16 but that could be why teams are making these moves.

I can’t see Flacco looking at this contract and not knowing he would redo it in three years. 29 mil cap hit is insane. 62 in 3 years is awesome and he did it in team-friendly cap numbers, both sides knowing they would be back at the table in 2016. Good for him. I expect he’ll get another, more reasnoable for the team extension then to flatten out the cap overall.

And, unless he falls off like crazy, you’re right, he won’t go 3 for 27 mil, but maybe a 5 or 6 year for 100 or so with a more even cap number. It all depends on if he can keep his play up. He may be inconsistent in the regular season, but he’s ridiculous in the playoffs, and in the end, that’s where they need to lay it all on the line, and he certainly did last year.

Why is is safe to assume Flacco won’t be taking a small deal in 3 years? Absent his outstanding play at the right time in the playoffs of this year, when has he looked like an elite QB? Who is to say the recent exception has become the new norm?

I give Flacco all the credit in the world for his play during the Ravens SB run. He was outstanding. But I’ll wait for him to do that more consistently before I lump him in with the elite QBs in the NFL. Until then, he’s just like Brad Johnson, who was a great QB for one season. But a mediocre one for the rest of his career.

As crazy as a $29 million cap hit in 2016 sounds, by then Suggs and possibly Ngata will both be off the books. Whether either of them will still be Ravens by then is a good question, but their careers will certainly be near their respective ends. Regardless, Flacco’s contract will certainly be restructured like Florio said, and the Ravens will have to rework things in order to keep some of their younger talent like Torrey Smith, Pitta, Upshaw, and Webb on the team at that time.
