You read the actual details of the contract as Florio wrote it in the article, and it looks like a win/win for the Ravens and Flacco.

You read the comments and you’d think it was the worst sports move ever.

You Ravens fans aren’t the smartest bunch are you? Cause the Browns and Bengals are, what, the 85 Bears now? The AFC East produced 2 playoff teams in 09 and 10, just like the AFC North.

Shoulda,coulda,woulda is irrelevant. Flacco was and is the QB who won those games with the Ravens. So he got paid.

So we should devalue Flacco’s numbers because he(unlike Brady,Manning,and others) DOESN’T miss games? The numbers are what they are. He’s got the most wins, he’s the SB MVP, so he got paid. End of story.

By paying the largest contract in league history and structuring so its over $20MM under the yearly average the first 2 years, give the Ravens a short term window to stay competitive before the cap shuts them down.

Its a mistake to imply that in 3 years the Ravens can simply redo the deal, like its no problem. That $20MM isn’t going away….EVER.

Florio might hate it, but unless your QB is named Tom Brady, or is still playing under his rookie contract, your QB is taking too much of your cap. And if you believe that the cap is suddenly going to drastically expand in 2015 and 2016. I have a bridge to sell you. They are already borrowing against the future to get the 2% bump they got this year.

BTW- its not like the Ravens didn’t get the best deal that they could. Even the elite QB’s get paid too much.

Flacco is averaging just under 10.8 wins per season. Not bad, certainly.

Over the same time period, not counting the year they sat out, Brady and Manning both averaged 12.25 wins per season. Brady’s career average for full seasons is 12.40 wins.

Seems like Ravens fans are having to engage in some “funny math” to justify the contract.

So is Florio going to portray this as a “salary cut” for Flacco?

Because since Florio thinks Brady’s deal is a pay INCREASE – even though the extension gives him about half as much as the Jets gave Sanchez – that would make just as much sense.

Regardless I think this is great news. I’m all for seeing other teams pay average QBs as the best in football – and have no problem with Brady leaving money on the table to be spent on fielding a better team.

Inconsistent as he can be during the regular season, he still helps us win those games to get to the playoffs. Every year. But they’re paying him more for his last 3 playoff appearances, 18 TD’s, 2 INT’s. That’s crazy good, against playoff teams. Then when he finally got up from under Cam Cameron, he started to fully blossom. It worked for Drew Brees when he got with Sean Payton as well. Under Cameron, Brees was NOT the 20 million dollar QB we know and love now. And the Ravens are paying for their future. It’s a lot of money, but it’s the going rate for top quarterbacks, and yes he IS a top QB despite his up and downs. I don’t care how good your defense is, you don’t make the playoffs every with an average quarterback. It’s impossible. Flacco earned his money.

Joe had a great six week run to the Super Bowl, but he is still the QB who has an average completion percentage and gets rattled.

just bc you are the highest paid player doesn’t make you the better then everyone else in the league. This is how contracts in the NFL work, each time they get a little bit bigger and you can thank the greedy agents for that

now if anyone else has a better idea for what the ravens could do at QB this year id love to hear it, but unfortunately this is the only option

BTW flacco has won more games then any qb in the league over the past 5 years, ill take that inconsistency

We’ll see week 1-3 how the Ravens games plays out. If he doesn’t perform like the highest paid QB in the NFL, their is going to be criticism, until then, he won the Superbowl without showing any signs on slowing down, give the man what he deserves! And that’s coming from a Broncos fan!
