No they won’t. Defense didn’t make the game safer when it was ahead of offense – on the contrary the game has gotten far safer as offense has surged ahead of defense.

As for lawsuits, why are they even allowed? No one has the right to sue because of injury in competition; injury ultimately is the responsibility of the individual involved, not the league/sanctioning body. It’s lunacy to allow any lawsuits.

What is Goodell talking about: It has already happened 1962 Howard Lucas a Guard from the NY Titans died of a briken neck suffered on the field. 1981 VJ Cain died of an apparent heartattack on the field- Korey Stringer died in Training camp.

If Goodell have his way we will be watching games of catch. the players wont be playing football at all. This is a man who has never played the game. why the owners put this guy in charge is the real question?

let’s be honest here. Does Goodell REALLY worry about a player dying on the field???

Or does he really worry about the bad PR and negative financial effect on the league if a player died on the field?

My guess is the latter.

All this hate towards Goodell is silly. The bad business is mentioned because the human aspect should be understood without having to say it. He’s not a mentally ill serial killer, of course he would be heartbroken about it. He would probably feel responsible for it if he didn’t take necessary precautions to prevent a tragedy like that. Not only would it be terrible for the victim but everyone of the 60,000 plus witnesses would lose a part of their soul as well. Sometimes big daddy has to make decisions the kiddies don’t like but should understand those decisions are made in the interest of the greater good.

No. He’s terrified of the lawsuit that will filed against the league if a player dies on the field, and the amount of money it will likely cost the league.

That Nick Collins injury shook me up for a while – Marcus Lattimore and Derek Sherrod’s leg injuries – gruesome ….

Stuff that happens in a contact sport, but still – it sucks seeing a person go through that sort of stuff.

In my opinion he is concerned about youth/high school football. All these concussion issues is mostly about pennsions but also keeping football safe so parents allow their kids to play for the success of future NFL generations.

People have died in NASCAR, MOTOGP and other sports, if it happens it will be tragic yes but this sounds like mommy going to school with a kid to protect him from bullies.. You can’t! Roger needs to go. I hate that guy.

Yes, but it’s not a sport that parents send their kids to play in comparison to football. It’s child involvement for football is at a higher scale than racing (any form)

It’s fear tactics. No NFL player as far as I know has died on the field. This is part of his globalization agenda. Soften the game to appeal to larger masses. How can someone who’s pushing to extend the season, someone who fought against a better pension plan for former players claim he fears for player safety? Goodell is flawed fraud. He is David Stern of the NFL with no regard for the fans and the integrity of the game. He wants to reach out to and amass “casual” fans while neglecting the hardcore fans who have made the NFL the most popular sport in America.

Its getting tiresome of the simplistic posters jumping over Goodell. First off do you realize it was someone elses quote. Secondly, i hope you can comprehend he is a spokesperson for the owners and does what he is instructed to do. Discussions about the 18 game schedules and instituting a Thursday night game is based on the owners decision not his. Lastly you talk about equipment that has to do with the NFLPA, the league cannot even get the union to make the players wear pads, yet it is somehow Goodells fault. Time to wake up people.

That’s just going to happen one day. The game invites it. He needs to get over it and make sure they have a superb PR and league wide response plan ready when it happens.

I thought it happened last year in the Patriots/Ravens game on the Stevan Ridley hit. The way Ridley collapsed terrified me. I thought he was dead. And I bet Roger Goodell thought so too.
