London Fletcher having surgery today, planning comeback

Washington Redskins v St Louis Rams Getty Images

While Redskins coach Mike Shanahan recently created some doubt about London Fletcher’s future with the team, Fletcher himself said he’s coming back next year.

The veteran linebacker told David Elfin of 106.7 The Fan that he was having ankle surgery this morning, in plans of returning to the field.

Surgery is the first step towards prepping for next season,” Fletcher said.

Fletcher will also have surgery to clean up an elbow problem later this month, and the two procedures will be the first of his remarkable 15-year career.

That he’s been able to play that long is amazing in and of itself, but to do so without needing surgical assistance is remarkable.

And knowing that his intent is to play will be a significant bit of good news for the Redskins, who would have had a big hole to fill without the benefit of cap room or draft picks if he would have retired.

its ring time for a guy who is worth a thousand ray Lewis’s

Can’t blame him … or anyone … from playing as long as they can. Like the old saying goes, ‘you’ll never see this kind of money again’.

    Fletch lives baby!

This guy is nothing but a poor man’s Ray Lewis, as the Redskins are the poor man’s Ravens. How’d y’all like watching big brother win the Super Bowl??? Losers.

The Redskins better hope RGIII and Fletcher recover from surgery. No cap space and no draft picks make for a lot of questions.

PLUS…if they stick with that pistol offense or “read option” RGIII will end up in the operating room more than on the playing field.

Last time I saw they have seven picks this year, and a good looking rookie LB from last year’s draft.

Still good to see that London is returning.

I love London Fletcher & definitely want him on the team, but at 6 million & the cap penalty… I’m torn a little bit… We could of saved a lot of money by his releasing/retiring and had open competition with Keenan Robinson, Lorenzo Alexander, etc.

  9. thunderskins007 says: Mar 6, 2013 8:18 AM

one of the few free agents the skins got right. my friend who is a giants fan and has a second job crapping on the redskins it seems, really bashed the skins for letting antonio pierce walk in free agency and picking up fletcher who is older. pierce who has been out of the nfl for what, 2 to three years now and fletcher is still playing at a high level and will one day be in the hall of fame. a class act and great leader and a jersey that you can buy and walk around with pride as a redskin fan. thank you for coming back and hope the skins can do some damage in what may be the swan song for another great player.

one of the most under rated lb’s in nfl history. As an eagles fan, when we play the skins I admire his knowledge of the game.

I am glad he is coming back, better linebacker and person than Ray Lewis, and he is not a murderer!

Damn!! As a Cowboys fan, I was looking forward to not having to see that guy twice a year. He’s been a tremendous player for a long time.

  16. gonavybeatarmy says: Mar 6, 2013 8:48 AM

Undrafted and d3 college player London Fletcher is an amazing player, great leader, smartest and most well prepared player on the field and a very good guy. His stats in many categories dwarf those of ray Lewis. But lewis’ canton bust is rightly already under construction, while Fletcher’s will probably be under consideration for several years. It just goes to show the difference between how society perceives a shameless self-promoter vs. a quiet, humble and dignified man- a reflection of our country.

Rams letting him go was worse than losing Warner. Took them 10 yrs to find another ilb.

Please…to all you half wits that only repeat what you hear on ESPN to make yourself sound good, do me a favor and hang yourself!!! Im tired of this notion that the redskins dont have any draft picks. There are 7 rounds to a draft…simple math explains that if there are 7 rounds and the redskins gave up their 1st rounder for the next two years to the Rams..they still have at least 6 picks…7-1= 6. You all sound slow

Do you really want to go there? Should we surface Ray’s criminal background? I think not.

London Fletcher is pure class. Period.

Oh, Skins and Ravens are not related. You need some history before Skins fans think about adoption.

  22. bucrightoff says: Mar 6, 2013 9:46 AM

Nice to see Ravens fans now infesting every story. Let them enjoy it now, because the next 6 years will be a bunch of 6-10 and 8-8 finishes.

—————————————————–How is someone who’s been called “under rated” for ten years actually be under rated? Serious question not being sarcastic. Can’t we just call him a great LB and leave it at that?

Hope Fletcher gets healthy and comes back for another season! he is key to the redskins D, brings a bunch of leadership and still makes plays at such an old age.

How bout the fact that the redskins beat you pansies just a few weeks before. How bout if RGIII was healthy they would have done it again in the superbowl. And how do u like the fact that joe flacco is TE highest paid player in nfl history?? Good luck signing anyone to help him win. You are a giant DB and I’m not talking about the football position.

  30. commonsensedude says: Mar 6, 2013 11:02 AM

I hope Fletch has a breakout season, gets Pro Bowl recognition and hopefully gets some of the recognition that he’s long been due but which has gone to flashier, more publicity-oriented players.

I feel sorry for the offensive players who are going to have to get tackled by Fletch this year. He’s old enough to have brought them into this world and he’s still young enough to make them feel like he’s taking them out.

  31. jebdamone says: Mar 6, 2013 11:20 AM

probably both one of the greatest LBs to ever play the game and the most underrated.

  32. truths4all says: Mar 6, 2013 11:29 AM

Funny how a SB win gives the classless Ravens fans more courage to spout off to prove how ignorant they are. But then you get a lot of courage when you are able to dodge murder charges and plenty of other illegal and criminal activities.

But be warned, once you stop being an active NFL player, there will no longer be any NFL team and their lawyers to get you off from facing your crimes. Retire and you are on your own. Next time, the Law will take you down and we will all see your guys do the perp walk in cuffs.

  33. romosmicrodongs says: Mar 6, 2013 11:32 AM

hey ravensdominate, how did It feel watching your ravens lose at home in over time to the skins backup rookie qb?

    Ill wait.

Last time I checked Fletcher hasn’t murdered anyone like Lewis has and the Skins beat the Ravens last year before they got lucky and won the Super Bowl by a fluke. Ravens fans try and drum up some rivalry with skins fans when we actually could care less about em.

  35. skinsfan91 says: Mar 6, 2013 12:07 PM

Maybe the Redskins can use this as fuel. I’m sure it will be Fletch’s last season. We can use that gimmick the same way the Ravens did with Lewis.

  36. blackqbwhiterb says: Mar 6, 2013 12:21 PM

Glad to hear he’s coming back!!
Hopefully they can figure out a way to keep Alexander also…..And get some DB’s that can play/stay healthy/not get high……Hail

  37. skinsdiehard says: Mar 6, 2013 12:21 PM

Last time I checked, the Skins beat the Ravens with our backup QB. 49ers let the Ravens off the hook in the SB. If the 49ers ran it three times from the 5-yard line, they would have scored the winning TD. Ravens lucked out as usual.

So Ray Ray, when you murdered the person in Atlanta, what was your state of mind, “Smoooth…i was just, u know, Smoooth.” Do you mean you were intoxicated? “No, I was smoooth.” Judge: “Let’s move on. We’re obviously dealing with an idiot.”

    _______
Ravens fans are bizarre. For a great team that just won the Lombardi trophy they have a massive inferiority complex. I’m from DC, and I would say most people around here have a general respect for the Ravens. Ravens fans, however, seem to take personal offense when someone in the DMV area supports the Redskins instead of the Ravens. When a Redskins fan says “I think London Fletcher is a great linebacker,” the Baltimore response is not “I think Ray Lewis is a much better linebacker,” it’s “London Fletcher sucks and doesn’t deserve to wash Lewis’ jock strap”.

Your team is better, they just won a trophy declaring them the best team in the NFL; what more do you need, for the Redskins to get kicked out of the NFL and disband as a franchise? When you rag on inferior teams, it doesn’t make your team better, it just makes you look like a weak and petty individual.

  40. scoobies05 says: Mar 6, 2013 4:13 PM

several excellent points. but when someone comes on and says ray is a murderer when all facts show that clearly he isnt it tends to get people upset. personally i like fletch and wish him well. great player…just not in ray’s elite all time great status

  41. logicalvoicesayz says: Mar 7, 2013 3:46 PM

Talk about obsessive inferiority complex. I have yet to see an article about this guy where people dont start comparing him to Ray Lewis. Why? Ray didnt ask to be compared. Raven Nation certainly could care less. I seriously doubt Fletch himself cares.

It’s all in the heads of certain skins fans. Let them be. Raven Nation has more meaningful things to talk about… like a championship TEAM.

  42. skinsfaninnebraska says: Mar 10, 2013 4:00 PM

I’d rather have one Fletcher than a dozen Ray Lewises. Fletcher is a class act.
