Patriots guard Donald Thomas expected to test free agency

Stevan Ridley, Donald Thomas AP

When guards Dan Connolly and Logan Mankins were forced to miss games this season due to injury, the New England Patriots turned to Donald Thomas to step in and fill the void.

Thomas started seven games for the Patriots last season and played well with Connolly and Mankins sidelined. Now Thomas is expected to test the free agent market.

According to Shalise M. Young of the Boston Globe, Thomas is “fully expected” to test the market when free agency begins next Tuesday.

With his play for the Patriots last season, Thomas could generate significant interest on the market for teams looking for starting help on the offensive line. With Connolly and Mankins both under contract for next season, Thomas likely won’t have the same opportunity to play in New England that he could find in free agency.

This guy is a pretty good player. He will get starter money for someone else and he deserves it. Not good enough to start for the Pats

Great guy and deserves to be a starter definitely

Definitely don’t want to see him go. He’s a quality player and you can never have enough depth at OL. However, he’s shown he can be a reliable starter and will probably get offered more than what he will get as a backup in NE.

Yeah, the Lions make sense. Mayhew said they took too much pressure up the middle. Then Nagy could play center instead of little-man-syndrome Raiola.

Connolly is 31. This guy is way younger and he filled in and the O-line didn’t skip a beat. Cut Connolly and pay this guy. Recruit a younger center for security if Wendell goes down.

This guy could start in Az, Cle, Det, SD, Dallas….
Another Miami reject that will play elsewhere

I was surprised how well this guy played while Mankins & Connolly missed time. I think it still remains to be seen if he’s a 16-game starter, though.

The O-line coaching that players receive in New England is the best. Dante Scarnachia is able to take free agents and other teams cuts and form them into a true working unit. Players step into various positions on the line at a moments notice. This has been going on for years and the man does not get much notice but the players in the league know who he is.
