Time’s running short for teams to re-sign their own players before the start of free agency and that’s just what the Bills are trying to do with cornerback/returner Leodis McKelvin.

McKelvin’s agent Hadley Engelhard told the Associated Press that he has had conversations with the Bills about McKelvin’s return to the team and that there’s another round of talks set for Friday. Bills General Manager Buddy Nix has said the team would like to retain McKelvin, who has expressed an interest in playing more on defense than he did with the Bills last season.

McKelvin made four starts in the secondary last season and had one interception, but spent most of his time in sub packages when the team was on defense. He brought the Bills the most value on special teams with a pair of punt returns for scores and a 28.3-yard average on kickoff returns.

Engelhard classified the talks as “in the beginning stages,” so there will need to be a quick ramping up on Friday or McKelvin will be able to hear from other teams. The Bills, who franchised Jairus Byrd and re-signed linebacker Bryan Scott this week, also face the possible loss of guard Andy Levitre if he hits the open market.
