Getty ImagesBears defensive tackle Henry Melton is ready to sign his franchise tender.
Melton’s agent, Jordan Woy, wrote on Twitter that Melton has accepted the tender offer, which means he is willing to play the 2013 season for a guaranteed salary of $8.45 million. However, Woy added that he and Melton want to work with the Bears on getting a long-term deal done before the July 15 deadline.
Woy also represents Cowboys defensive end/outside linebacker Anthony Spencer, who has also decided to sign his franchise tender now while still working on getting a new deal done in the coming months.
The 26-year-old Melton, who was selected to his first Pro Bowl last season, said after the Bears franchised him that he took it as a compliment that they were willing to commit to him. Some players don’t like the franchise tag, but Melton is glad to take it.

Refreshing to see a player with Melton’s attitude…Now time to free up some cap space.
This guy just keeps getting better and better. Hopefully he’s not yet done improving. Crazy to think he used to be a running back for the Texas Longhorns (16 TDs and 4.7 ypc in two years carrying the ball)
As a Bear Fan I’d love for them to lock him up long term, but I wonder what a probowl DT is worth in a trade. He’s a stud, and only 25 years old..
Melton has made a good move but
what he needs to do is sign a new contract and open up some cap room.
He’s a stud, hope he gets a deal done…
Everybody, including Melton, knows the Bears are going to eventually resign him. This guy played this well, he’s going to get 8 1/2 million for this season and then some up front money on a huge deal after this season. Well played young man, well played.
