For a brief moment on Thursday, it looked like tight end Martellus Bennett had agreed to a new contract with the Giants.

The announcement of a new deal turned out to have come from someone with way too much time on his or her hands that decided to make a fake Bennett Twitter account, but the Giants are reportedly among those who would like to see a true report of that nature. Ralph Vacchiano of the New York Daily News reports that the team would like to re-sign both Bennett and guard Kevin Boothe before they hit the open market on March 12.

Boothe’s agent Joel Segal told Vacchiano that his client would like to remain with the Giants and that they’ve been “having positive conversations” about a continued working relationship. Segal did say “one day at a time” when asked if it would happen before next Tuesday.

Neither deal is thought to be imminent, but it shouldn’t take too long for both sides to sort out where they stand. With the start of a three-day negotiating window on Saturday, there’s a good chance that the Giants and the players will have a clear view of just what the market looks like well ahead of the point that anyone can sign a deal.
