That’s because he was at a point with the Jets his last couple years there that it was either win big or he was going to lose his job. He knew full well that if they won the SB he would have been given the latitude to clean up his mess, and he also knew that if they sucked like they actually did it wouldn’t be his problem to clean up.

Either way he really didn’t care.

So the worst case for the Jets would be that they cut him and Santonio isn’t offered more than 7.5 by anyone, so to stick it to the Jets he signs with New England for the veteran minimum, still gets his 7.5 mil and the Jets end up paying him to play (minus the vet minimum) for their arch rivals. Very interesting power play here for both sides.

The Jets don’t even have any flexibility due to the guarantees. The mismanagement is epic.

You misinterpreted the article. The Jets wouldn’t be on the hook for the full $7.5 M because they’d be off the hook for whatever Holmes earned in 2013 from another team. The way they can save the most money is actually cutting him because that $7.5 M would likely be cut in half at the least.

I’m bettin his agent would take that into account and try to force most of the money he would earn in year ine into guaranteed money in year two. At least that’s what I would do if I was his agent and let him play at minimum salary year one to maximize his earnings.
