Report: Steelers on verge of cutting James Harrison

Harrison Getty Images

Moments after pointing out that, when it comes the Steelers’ desire to reduce the cap number of linebacker James Harrison, it’s not as easy as it was with other Pittsburgh players, a report emerged demonstrating just how hard it can be.

According to Mike Garafolo of USA Today, the Steelers are on the verge of releasing Harrison.

With other teams jettisoning players in advance of the start of the three-day tampering window, the Steelers have no such urgency because the Steelers most likely won’t be chasing big-money free agents.  For the Steelers, the challenge is simply to create enough cap space to go about business the way they always have — methodical, conservative, building from within not without.

Either way, it looks like they’ll soon be without Harrison.

In other news, NFL 2013 revenue is projected to be down significantly due to lack of income from Harrison’s fines.

Subject to change if/when he signs somewhere else.

  21. sirhulka says: Mar 8, 2013 2:59 PM

Upon his release, I can’t wait for Browns’ fan convene and scream to sign him. With that in mind, rewind two seasons ago when Harrison knocked out Cribbs, MoMass, and a season later when he KO’ed McCoy. At that point, he was the “dirtiest player in the league.”

Considering Browns’ fans are the most moronic, hillbilly fans in the NFL, it wouldn’t be surprising.

I’d like silverback to come back for another year at a pay cut. Either way, if he doesn’t come back, next man steps up. Thats what the steelers do and what the draft is all about. Harrison still has has the greatest defensive play in Superbowl history and will forever be a steeler. Take the paycut, James.

Aww, I was hoping he’d be around for another year. I think there’s a few teams who’d sign him. To the toolbags enjoying his departure, remember when you all were happy that Joey Porter was gone? Greg Lloyd? and Levon Kirkland? How did that work out for you? Funny how this Steeler front office you love to mock always seems to know when it’s time to move on, and there’s usually not a long wait for the next QB menace. That being said, I don’t see his replacement on this roster at present time.

Things looks rough for Steelers. Harrison gone, Mendenhall gone, no good run game, Wallace gone. Taylor, Clark, Polamalu all Old. The Steelers are Old and Washed Up. Looks like they will be fighting with the Browns to avoid Bottom Feeder Status.

  42. ziggy26 says: Mar 8, 2013 3:23 PM

It’s a shame for Pittsburgh, because Harrison probably has two or three years of good football left in him. It’s similar to when they had to let Joey Porter go (Porter went onto compile 32 sacks in three seasons with the Dolphins).

The good news for the Steelers is that Harrison had only 4.0 sacks in three seasons with Joey Porter on the team. He’s put up 60 in five seasons after Porter left (Harrison took Porter’s spot in the starting lineup).

Jason Worlids, who’s been playing behind Harrison for the past three years has 10 sacks. Harrison played 43 games in his first three years, vs. 42 for Worlids.

Harrison was 29 when he joined the starting lineup. Worlids is 25.

Normally, I am always pro player because they’re the ones that put it all on the line. I dont think they’re over paid. In this case, Harrison has a team who believed in him and he played well in return. I could understand Harrison’s stance if Pittsburgh had the money and just wasnt paying. He knows Steelers are strapped but still wants all the money.. I guess it’s hard to ask someone to lose 3 million for the cause. I wish him well. He will be missed…

I have no idea how much is left in the tank — it’s not like he’s a 15-year veteran — but a Steelers defense without Harrison will be a defenseless defense. Playing sparingly this past season, Harrison still led the team with 6 sacks, tied with Timmons…
The Steelers’ offense better snap its five-season scoring slump and start producing points, and lots of ‘em.
    Pronto!!!

  86. jmblosser82 says: Mar 8, 2013 6:06 PM

For all if you who complain when we talk about past SB wins, guess what it may be history but the funny thing about history, it repeats itself. We release aging players that go on and have some success but the replacement goes on to do good. We still have more dead weight/injury cases they should cut but I don’t see many of those pink slips going out. Troy is overpaid for how often he plays, Hampton is on the downside(but who will fill that gigantic space he fills), Ike is older but he can still play, and Clark tends to hurt himself too much too. On the other side, the line is getting younger, but the all get injured too much, none of the backs can run, mike can’t catch, need younger backup QBs(seriously who breaks a rib on a simple roll), and they need someone to go with Brown. With a decent draft/free agency, they should easily get a wildcard spot and then be back on top in the north in 2-3 years.

  92. clashpoint says: Mar 8, 2013 8:31 PM

Gotta love all the cleveland ravens fans here. Its not like they are actual fans of the ravens, much less football fans. Haters always seem kind of pathetic. My fave part is how half of them snivel about how old the steelers are, then snivel again when they get younger. Meh. They’ll go back in the closet soon enough.

The steelers aren’t that old as a team anymore and getting younger all the time.

On offense the o line will have two 2nd year guys (adams and decastro), one 3rd year (gilbert) and one 4th year (pouncey.) The fifth starter will either be old man colon or another 2nd year guy in beachum. With two #1 picks and two #2 picks, thats a lot of young talent right there.

Both wrs are going to be 4th year guys (brown and sanders.) The tight end will be a 2nd year guy (paulson) until miller gets back, and a draft pick. The fb is a 2nd year guy (will johnson) and whoever ends up at running back won’t be over year 3 or 4. Ben is the oldest there and he’s not that old as far as qbs go. Considering all the youth and injuries, it really shouldn’t be a surpise the offense didn’t play as well as it could have last year. With even average health, it should be much improved.

The d is a bit older but not as much as you might think. Combined with the sudden flood of cornerbacks littering the market, harrisons release means lewis will quite likely be resigned. We might have older safeties but lewis, allen, gay, brown, victorian and whoever they draft from the deep cornerback class more than make up for ike. I am hoping allen gets moved to safety eventually to replace either clark or polamalu. He’ll get playing time there anyways this coming year. The other safety spot might well get restocked with adraft pick, or even another an ex corner, it seems they’ll have plenty of corners. #1 pass defense without turnovers or much of a pass rush last year. They might be even better this year and certainly deeper.

For the line, keisal and hampton are old, but still playing well, and everyone else is young. With harrison gone, the linebackers are suddenly a lot younger as well, with only foote being older.

Those of y’all hooting and hollaring are doing it awfully prematurely. Last year the steelers had the #1 defense in the league. It likely won’t fall that far, and the offensive should be significantly better. From where I sit, the Steelers have a pretty decent future and I don’t care for a nanosecond what any bunch of football-ignorant trolls think.

I would love to see Harrison lined opposite clay Matthews! Dude might be getting old but he’s still got a great motor and will make any defense he joins better.

I get it, people dislike him from the monstrous hits he delivers, but no one in their right mind can say he’s not one of the best pass rushing olb’s in football.

For all those “6 rings” comments, how many of those 6 rings did you win in your first 17 years in existence? (Hint: The Steelers were founded in 1933, not in 1970)

As for the Batch comments, yup, Batch beat us. It was one game in our SUPER BOWL CHAMPIONSHIP season. It’s sad that that one win over the Ravens was the highlight for your 2012 season. Our highlight, winning Super Bowl 47! So you Steeler fans can suck it!

And those complaining about Ravens trolls, you have no room to talk because the Steeler trolls do the same thing to all the Ravens articles.

I have news for you Ravenschick : 6 rings beats 2 rings every time and that is the bottom line!
