Harvin trade makes Vikings potential players for free-agent receivers

Getty Images

Dolphins fans?  Time to get nervous.

With the Vikings shipping receiver Percy Harvin to the Seahawks the day before the launch of free agency, the Vikings could be looking to replace him via the annual veteran shopping spree.  Which could mean that their reported interest in Steelers receiver Mike Wallace will become actual interest — and competition.

Of course, Vikings G.M. Rick Spielman explained at the Scouting Combine the dangers of spending big in free agency on players who their prior team decided not to keep.  But the Vikings have real needs in the passing game, and with few rookie wideouts capable of making an instant impact, the best approach could be to pay an impact player the money that had been budgeted for Harvin.

Besides, Spielman also said the Vikings had “no intent” to trade Percy.

For now, Harvin would be replaced in the starting lineup Jarius Wright, a fourth-round pick in 2012 who did a decent job after Harvin’s season ended with a sprained ankle.  The money more likely will be spent on a guy who can stretch the field, which is what the Vikings thought they were getting last season in Jerome Simpson.

Why would Minnesota go after Wallace? They have no need for a deep threat given that Ponder can’t throw the ball 2o yards in the air.

  2. drwbrsdmndsnxplntn says: Mar 11, 2013 1:26 PM

Thats not Spielman’s MO. He uses the draft and budget bin free agents. Thats not going to change.

P.S. We still have MVPeterson. Thats the gameplan yo.

Get nervous? Miami, South Beach, NO income tax vs. well Minnesota. I believe Jennings goes to Minn. and Wallace will be a Fin tomorrow at 4:00 pm.

Why make another NFC team better, why not trade him to an AFC team …geniuses!

  12. packersfansuck says: Mar 11, 2013 1:38 PM

Another great move by Dick Spielman. Thank you for continuing to look for receivers who can’t catch the damn ball. Hey…who needs them you have a quaterback that couldn’t make the other team across town.(golden gophers). PS – Rick I hope your wife keeps stepping out on you like the rumors in town say.

  13. kurmudge says: Mar 11, 2013 1:39 PM

Trading Harvin for Jennings, if Jennings will include an injury incentive in his contract, is a perfect swap. Then draft a deep-threat outside guy.

  14. justintuckrule says: Mar 11, 2013 1:39 PM

I hate to say it but I see mr. closeted Giant fan Ziggy Wilf spinning that first rounder over to the Giants for Cruz who will replace Harvin with more production at far less cost. WAKE UP MARA!! PAY CRUZ!

  15. jm91rs says: Mar 11, 2013 1:42 PM

Why would you trade away one diva WR and go sign another? Percy would have been happy if he got paid, makes no sense to pay Wallace when Harvin is as good overall and better at the short stuff.

  16. vikesfansteve says: Mar 11, 2013 1:42 PM

They need Wallace & Jennings but will probably get neither.

  17. Vinson Smith says: Mar 11, 2013 1:52 PM

Even more of a reason for the 49ers to trade for Revis.

  18. purplekoolaid1 says: Mar 11, 2013 1:56 PM

Why would they want Wallace? Can Mr. Noodle Arm even get him the ball?

  19. fwippel says: Mar 11, 2013 1:57 PM

Honestly, I think Anquan Boldin would be a better choice for the Vikings than Mike Wallace.

Boldin is a big receiver, great hands, and has been consistent than Wallace. Ponder needs a reliable receiver whom he can trust when he throws the ball. Boldin is that kind of a receiver. Then they can go after speed guy in the draft, like perhaps De’Andre Hopkins of Clemson.

While I hate the fact that the Vikings traded Harvin, if he was unhappy, it’s better to trade him now and get something for him than to let him leave via free agency. It sounds like Harvin was making it impossible for the Vikings to keep him around.

  20. japmen says: Mar 11, 2013 1:57 PM

Anyone that thinks Harvin is better than Wallace needs to actually watch the games. Harvin was a headache that missed games and never realised his potential. Wallace on the other hand just caught 32 TDs in the last 4 years. I know which one i would want….

  21. dublindemonszfl says: Mar 11, 2013 1:59 PM

So long PUNK, nevermind Wallace. He can go fail with the Jets or the Fish. Hope on Jennings, but the draft is good place to start. The Vikings have a lot of young competition at Wr, but will any rise to the top? I like a cheap sleeper in Ramses Barden, 6’6 and 224, give him a look see. Percy is now a lot closer to the wacky tobacky in WA, he will smoke up, stop taking his meds and fail a couple randoms and get a migrane. Couldn’t happen to a more ungrateful punk. S Rice just got cut.

  22. purplekoolaid1 says: Mar 11, 2013 2:03 PM

Is it just me, or does Spielman look like someone from this site? Just sayin….

  23. beavertonsteve says: Mar 11, 2013 2:05 PM

Usually RFA’s are just too expensive, but Cruz would make sense here. Since the Seattle pick is so close to Vikes original pick they’d lose it basically ends up being Harvin for Cruz + any additional picks Seattle has to give up.

  24. skylander14 says: Mar 11, 2013 2:10 PM

With the 25th pick in the 2013 NFL draft the Minnesota Vikings select, Justin Hunter, Wide Receiver from the University of Tennessee.

  25. hdahs143 says: Mar 11, 2013 2:11 PM

Obsess much? You need to get a life. And some help.

  26. funshipm174 says: Mar 11, 2013 2:39 PM

Hey Percy, why don’t you ask Sidney Rice if lfe gets easier after being traded to Seattle. It doesn’t.

  27. wludford says: Mar 11, 2013 2:42 PM

Vikings don’t have to land Wallace to replace Harvin. I’d be happy if they picked up Boldin and drafted another WR in the 1st or 2nd round.

  28. sclazo says: Mar 11, 2013 2:58 PM

Vikings cannot out bid the Dolphins plus Florida has no state taxes. Just move in no hope in trying to get Wallace Vikings.

My guess is they’re hoping Ponder improves upon his 10-6 record and playoffs from last year after his second NFL training camp and full season this year.

  34. textexington says: Mar 11, 2013 3:24 PM

It doesn’t matter the Viqueefs don’t have a QB on their roster capable of throwing the ball further than 10 yards. Viqueefs always have been and always will be a huge joke. Enjoy the Packers sloppy seconds.2009.LOLZ. Go Pack Go!

  35. audioflint says: Mar 11, 2013 3:31 PM

With the new three day Agent-GM discussion period this year, I wonder if the Vikes already have their replacement lined up when FA opens on Tuesday.

If that’s the case, that means they have additional picks in a “deep” draft and are about to sign Harvin’s replacement.

    Could be interesting to see…

  36. dirtydrew says: Mar 11, 2013 3:33 PM

Way to go Sea bags. Harvin and his migraine headaches, good luck with that one.

  37. chris10385 says: Mar 11, 2013 3:35 PM

Use Seattle’s first round pick you got and go get Cruz and take him out of the NFC East please. The Redskins secondary would be thankful. Then go and get Mike Wallace. Problem solved.

Who’s JOEY Amendola? You sound like a REAL football fan!

  39. joeyashwi says: Mar 11, 2013 3:41 PM

As a Packer fan I find this move hilarious. If they were making a trade with Seattle it should have included Flynn. Ponder is horrible. If they land Jennings and Boldin, it could work though. Spielman isn’t that smart though. I’ll watch Peterson tear my Pack up all day again this year but without a QB or receivers, the Vikes are closer to being a four win team again and will not get a win in the division.

  40. ponder7vikings says: Mar 11, 2013 3:46 PM

    ponder played better without harvin..

vikings could be even better if they play it right.

  41. steelerben says: Mar 11, 2013 3:49 PM

Why would the Vikings want Wallace? Well, I would think that being able to keep Peterson from having to see an eight man box every down would be useful. And I’m pretty sure Kyle Rudolph would appreciate a little room to work in the middle of the field.

One route, iffy work ethic, and unreliable… Vikings fans loved him when he was named Randy, I don’t see why they won’t love him this go round.

  42. albertmn says: Mar 11, 2013 3:57 PM

I understand if you want to rip on Ponder, but those trying to claim he can’t even throw the ball 20 yards (or 10 yards if you are really dumb Packer fans) just show yourselves to be stupid. I’m old and fat and can throw the ball 20 yards. Ponder can easily throw it at least 50-60 yards. Now, whether or not he is accurate at any distance is a legit question. But, when you try to claim any NFL QB can’t throw 20 yards, you just sound silly.

Fat, dumb, and stupid is no way to go through life, son.

  43. boobschannel says: Mar 11, 2013 3:59 PM

    Ponder’s playoffs???

I’m pretty sure Ponder tapped out of the playoff game, and watched from the sideline.

  45. vike129 says: Mar 11, 2013 4:00 PM

I’d rather give the big money to cruz. He’s more of a team first kinda guy.Love to have Wallace, but he’s a little bit of a diva.

  46. lnfinite says: Mar 11, 2013 4:10 PM

Good riddance as far as I am concerned. Percy is a locker room cancer just waiting to infect another team. History will repeat itself, as he will make a few plays then go back into pout mode. He is just about as childish as many of the Packer fans being a cancer to every Viking story. Still mad about Favre? Get over it already!

  47. dragonfly99 says: Mar 11, 2013 4:20 PM

Jennings. Vikings organization love Packer castoffs.

  48. lordfletcher says: Mar 11, 2013 4:35 PM

sign Jennings….. Trade for boldin if the price is right (would like to see a 2014 pick than a 13) and draft, lb / DL in the 1st rd / wr 2nd round.

  49. daddyb1gdrawz says: Mar 11, 2013 4:35 PM

Why would Fins fans be nervouse? They have more cap space and have warm weather. Did I not read that Wallace prefers warm weather? Couple that with the lack of state tax and it is a no brainer.

  50. bobnelsonjr says: Mar 11, 2013 4:38 PM

    1) The Seahawks overpaid for a part time unreliable injury prone whiner.

    2) The same truth challenged viking fans that thought Harvin was so wonderful are now finally admitting the truth now that he is no longer has to purple.

    3) It is a very safe bet the vikings will screw up on the player they select with the draft pick.

They make some poor choices at the top of the draft. Michael Bennett, Dimitrius Underwood, Kenechi Udeze, Troy Williamson, Tyrell Johnson, Chris Cook, Christian Ponder, Erasmus James, Chris Hovan, etc.

  51. deltaoracle says: Mar 11, 2013 6:06 PM

Vikes will most likely reach again for another QB in the draft. I laugh and point my finger at the person acting like Ponder carried the team into the playoffs. You (ought to) know that your season rests on the legs of Peterson and no one else. Mini now down to one playmaker and still rebuilding. Even their brass think so , otherwise Frazier would have a nice multi-year contract right now.
