Bears finalizing deal with Jermon Bushrod

Jermon Bushrod AP

The Bears appear to have found the left tackle they were looking for.

According to Ian Rapoport of the NFL Network, the Bears are “finishing up a long-term deal” for free agent tackle Jermon Bushrod.

That gives them some much-needed stability on Jay Cutler’s blind side, after the J’Marcus Webb experiment ended poorly.

The deal would reunite Bushrod with new Bears offensive coordinator Aaron Kromer, who coached him with the Saints.

No more J Webb nation? Sad face. #justkidding

Jay Cutler just ordered the Bears front office Edible Arrangements.

Webb wasn’t really an experiment. Somebody had to beat him for the job (looking at you, Chris Williams). The intention was never to groom Webb as a long term left tackle. The real experiment was watching Jerry Angelo trying to draft a quality long-term starter on the offensive line, and Lance Louis is the only guy who has come close.

The guy was lousy as a starter, but he was a 7th round pick that’d make a decent backup lineman who can play left or right side if you absolutely needed him to.

As a married father of 3, I can honestly say with no shame that Phil Emery can totally do me after the moves he made today. It feels so good to have a REAL General Manager.

  6. peaceknuckle says: Mar 12, 2013 6:49 PM

Finally! This position should have been solidified the day they traded for Cutler. Better late than never.

    Crap…..

  8. mrlaloosh says: Mar 12, 2013 6:51 PM

Uh oh. Brees gets big contract and Saints lose his blind-side protection. In two years Carl Nicks RT guard and Bushrod RT tackle. Both pro bowlers. Uh oh.

  9. maxbelmont says: Mar 12, 2013 6:51 PM

Solid opening salvo from Emery. Cutler gets another weapon to go along with Marshall and Alshon plus a solid LT to protect his behind. Bears now have plenty of options with #20 and could even go LB to replace #54 if he leaves.

“Oh Darn!” – every edge rusher in the nfc north that liked the easy stats J’Marcus Webb would offer every game.

  11. moeman79 says: Mar 12, 2013 6:53 PM

finaly this took long enough to protect Jay, does anyone miss Jerry Angelo yet?

  12. whitecastleisafoodgroup says: Mar 12, 2013 6:55 PM

    Now fix the other side.

Super Bowl XLVIII, here we come.

    Very solid signing.

  14. kane337 says: Mar 12, 2013 6:56 PM

How’s that Drew Brees contract working out?

  15. shwoogy1 says: Mar 12, 2013 6:59 PM

Great pick up!! It’s about time! Now to draft a guard and center and we will be set at o line! Great start Chicago Bears!

  16. red13041 says: Mar 12, 2013 7:01 PM

The signing of Bushrod and Bennett is an impressive start to free agency. if the bears can somehow get lucky and chance warmack or johnathon cooper fall to them at 20 to play guard, they will have the beginnings of a solid o-line. GO BEARS

  17. 52lightsxout52 says: Mar 12, 2013 7:03 PM

If Chicago continues to make real improvements to their O-line, like this one, they will be right there with my Packers next year vying for the division.

  18. rickrock6661982 says: Mar 12, 2013 7:05 PM

Looks like this will finally be the year when Jay Cutler is take off the field in an ambulance

  19. drinkdabeers says: Mar 12, 2013 7:10 PM

    In Emery we trust.

  20. supergruby says: Mar 12, 2013 7:14 PM

What? Protection for a QB? You sure can tell Lovie is gone.

  21. snaponrules says: Mar 12, 2013 7:15 PM

    Bushrod!!!! Are you kidding me?
The guy is only slightly better then Webb, and he is horrible. I guess they are hoping cutler finishes the year on injured reserve instead of paying him next year.
New GM, new coach, same crop o-line just with different names.

  22. BlackAndGoldAllDay says: Mar 12, 2013 7:19 PM

Bummer. Bushrod is a class guy and had developed into a decent LT.

  23. duerson1985 says: Mar 12, 2013 7:23 PM

    Phil Emry carry on sir.

  24. blackandbluedivision says: Mar 12, 2013 7:28 PM

Jay Cutler butt just went “ahhhhhhh”

  25. bigbadass says: Mar 12, 2013 7:33 PM

Any Bear fan that isn’t thrilled with how Phil Emory is running our team is clueless. Great start in free agency, sign a couple of our own back and get outta town.

  26. chi01town says: Mar 12, 2013 7:50 PM

Emery is going to bring CHICAGO
a Superbowl Champ! cant help but
think the Bears will win it all real soon. thanks Emery

  27. jerlee7 says: Mar 12, 2013 7:59 PM

Grab that $40 million in 1 year Drew. Now watch the pieces fall away. Classy.

  28. sportsfan83 says: Mar 12, 2013 7:59 PM

    @snapon

Who would you have preferred? Clady and Albert were both franchised. Did you want a guy who has been injured the last 2 seasons and wanted 10-11 mil in Jake Long,or did you want some rookie protecting Cutler?

  29. ephillips122 says: Mar 12, 2013 8:08 PM

Great start, but we still have a long way to go. Need more O-line and solid linebacker. Also have to learn a new offense again this year.

  30. metalhead65 says: Mar 12, 2013 8:19 PM

as a bears fan I am not sure how to react. I mean did they really just sign a real NFL offensive lineman? did they just sign a real NFL tight end? does this in fact mean they will actually throw the ball to him more than once a game if at all? this guy has done more to improve the Bears in a year than angelo did in the last 8 years he was here. now we will get to see how good Cutler really is with a NFL offense to play in and talent around him for the first time since he has been with the bears.

  31. bobbob1eye says: Mar 12, 2013 8:23 PM

Bushrod is a total class act (he’s actually a client of mine), but he’s a B to B+ LT at best. Brees makes his OL look much better than they are with his quick release. If anything, Cutler sometimes makes his OL look worse than they are. Bushrod may very well have his hands full going up against Allen and Matthews twice a year. I wish him the best.

  32. moeman79 says: Mar 12, 2013 8:32 PM

long probly wanted way to much, not saying bushrod is behind him, Webb got alot of blame he only had 3 bad games, but they were bad. there will be good competion at rt this year and webb has low low cap number will be a solid rt or swing tackle, if lace louis gets healthy(ty jared allen) we could have something here.

  33. maddenbears44 says: Mar 12, 2013 8:34 PM

Would like to see them finish off o-line with a player like Braxston Cave in a late round, to rotate between center and guard.

  34. hahapapa says: Mar 12, 2013 8:37 PM

    Sweet !

  35. patfic15 says: Mar 12, 2013 8:50 PM

    Thanks Drew! – Saints fans.

  36. patfic15 says: Mar 12, 2013 8:52 PM

Even as a Saints fan I hope Drew is knocked around a little more next year. Reality of that contract kicking in soon enough.

  37. sfsaintsfan says: Mar 12, 2013 9:46 PM

Would like to see him remain as a Saint, but Bushrod is not that good of a player. Average at best. Brees made him look much better than he really is. Cutler will still get sacked more often than most QB’s, Bushrod or no Bushrod, he is too indecisive with the football.

  38. chi01town says: Mar 12, 2013 9:48 PM

Emery brings Chicago a PRO BOWL
LT… 28 years old. and a Good TE.
Offensive players with upside an the skills to start. GO EMERY GO

  39. goodolebaghead says: Mar 12, 2013 10:08 PM

Drew Brees made this guy look good over and over. Decent lineman, but for the money, Chicago just got screwed. At leasy Cutler will have someone besides a cardboard box blocking for him.

  40. joemontanawasthegreatest says: Mar 12, 2013 10:15 PM

    Nice move, best case scenario…

  41. filthymcnasty1 says: Mar 13, 2013 1:11 AM

Does this mean that the Bears might finally beat the Packers for the first time in over 3 years this upcoming season?

    Nah.

  42. mdd913 says: Mar 13, 2013 1:39 AM

Don’t get too carried away here. Bushrod is a good supporting player but he was helped out a ton by Nicks and later Grubbs, and also Brees’ escapability.

Good move by the Bears to get a solid player, but he’s not what you all seem to think he is.

  43. Bob says: Mar 13, 2013 9:50 AM

Good luck with that, Bears. Bushrod is average at best.
