Bears part ways with team chaplain Ray McElroy

Cardinals Conduct Their Final Mass Before Entering Into The Conclave Getty Images

Apparently, not even God is immune to the pressure of a flat salary cap.

The Bears made the unusual move of getting rid of their team chaplain, according to Sean Jensen of the Chicago Sun-Times.

Citing multiple sources, Jensen reported the team “parted ways,” with Ray McElory. No reason was cited for the decision. The former Bears, Colts and Lions cornerback had been with the team more than five years.

There’s no word as to whether the Bears will convene a conclave to replace him, or if the white smoke is just Jay Cutler again.

    God help the Bears.

Even God can’t do anything for Cutler with that offensive line….

    Welcome Mr Tebow!

What’s that? You thought you were here to play QB?

Quick….where’s the list of the top free agent chaplains?

Yikes I hate to get the guy who made that phone call.

    “You’re fired”
    “You’re going to Hell”

Coach Didka never wouldda let that happen.

Cheap shot on Jay, but this should not surprise me…That ‘Smokin’ Jay website is the stupidest attack on a pro athlete I have ever seen.’

McElroy may still have a little in the tank. Maybe the Jets should contact him.

How does the waiver system work for team chaplain’s? Is it by record or collective lack of faith? That probably puts the Browns in good position either way.

  12. getyourownname says: Mar 12, 2013 1:05 PM

Not a problem, there’s an excellent draft and numerous free agents available at this position.

  14. raiddawgz says: Mar 12, 2013 1:15 PM

Wow…that’s not an attack if you are a pro athlete and are in a position to be looked up to by kids. Kick the smokes and use the patch when in public….smoke all you want when you retire and are not representing the NFL. Don’t get mad, just my opinion…

  15. larryboodry says: Mar 12, 2013 1:17 PM

Without a chaplain, teams don’t have a prayer.

  16. spharrgcs says: Mar 12, 2013 1:21 PM

Of all the people in the Bears organization this is the last person they should be parting ways with. They need all the help they can get on and off the field. Really.

  17. filthymcnasty1 says: Mar 12, 2013 1:25 PM

The Bears didn’t have a prayer with the chaplain either. Hence he’s being replaced by Matt Foley – motivational speaker.

This was never going to work out. The coaching staff kept taking the Lord’s name in vain when talking about Cutler’s decision making.

    Jay doesn’t smoke, dude…The pics are photo-shopped.
The man is diabetic and does a lot to help kids with Type-1 diabetes, through his foundation. A lot of kids do look up to him.

But you don’t know these things because you’d rather believe the BS.

He’s over the age of 9 and still believes in fairy tales. That has to make him eligible for some government assistants.

Perhaps if my team had choked away another easy playoff berth I wouldn’t have sense of humor either. But I doubt it.

Okay, even I had to laugh at that one, even if I think Jay’s decision making has gotten way better the last two seasons.

Your team choked away the #2 seed by losing to the Vikes in Week 17, then got smoked by San Fran two weeks later because of it…I found that very humorous.

I think it’s hilarious (as are most photoshops of my team’s QB acting all girly man on a waterslide). I think it’s more because his usual expression is kind of “rebel without a cause ish”. The dangling cig just fits it.

That said, Cutler was asked about it and he knows the guys that do it I believe. I don’t think he objects to it, or at least he didn’t when asked. I actually view that as a point in his favor. :)

    @CKL:

Nice post…If Cutler indeed knows the guys, and is okay with it, then who am I to argue? :D

I searched and there’s a story on CBS sports Nov 7, 2012 by Josh Katzowitz that JC knows about it and thinks it’s funny. I’d post the link but I am not sure if that’s allowed. It was an interview he did for Inside the NFL so maybe there’s a video out there somewhere as well.
