Dolphins agree with Dannell Ellerbe

AFC Championship - Baltimore Ravens v New England Patriots Getty Images

One of the breakout players of the Ravens’ Super Bowl run has found a new home.

Linebacker Dannell Ellerbe has agreed to terms with the Dolphins, Aaron Wilson of the Baltimore Sun reported Tuesday.

Per Wilson, the contract is for $35 million over five years.

The 27-year-old Ellerbe notched 32 tackles in four postseason games for the Ravens, including nine in Super Bowl XLVII.

Ellerbe was No. 39 on PFT’s list of the top 100 free agents.

With Ellerbe and outside linebacker / defensive end Paul Kruger departing in free agency and with middle linebacker Ray Lewis retiring, the Ravens have lost three key contributors from a title-winning defense.

Might be hard for Ellerbe to take Ray’s spot now in a Dolphins uniform. Miami fans should be excited. Ellerbe is a nice player, and the one player that would really weaken the Ravens defense if he left.

Ravens are letting people go because they are not willing pay the money other teams grasping for wins will. Name one defensive player that has left the ravens and played up to his contract? Hartwell? A. Thomas? Bart Scott? Landry? There is always a method to Ozzie’s madness.

    Kruger to the Browns
    Ellerbe to the Dolphins

Reed will probably end up with the Pats. Cary Williams probably gone.

5 of the 11 defensive starters gone.

But at least they kept their top 15 QB with a $120 million deal

  45. anasdonuts says: Mar 12, 2013 6:16 PM

Amazing what Steve Ross will do to get public dollars for a $500m stadium renovation. Notice how all these guys have reasonable year 1 cap #’s. Year 2 they all go thru the roof and most will have to restructure. What’s he trying to buy by spending this much at one time? Major PR after years where everything surrounding the team has been negative (Sparano, Harbaugh, Manning, Flynn, etc). This is where football meets politics. Ask Marlins fans and Dade County taxpayers about being set up by a billionaire owner

  46. brownsfan2013 says: Mar 12, 2013 6:16 PM

Hahahahahaha. Signed Flacco to the richest contract ever and have lost 5 pieces that were important pieces to the super bowl run. Ozzie would have to visit the wizard off Oz to replace Lewis, Reed, Boldin, Kruger, and now Ellerbe. The funniest part about this is they will be in the same position next year. Having to let go of key pieces just to get under the cap again. Steelers and Ravens will soon be bottom feeders of the NFL. Welcome to the factory of sadness.

This one is tough. But inside backers are just not worth the Dolphins were willing to pay , unless your name is Bowman or Willis. The Ravens will rebound. 63. steel6curtain says: Mar 12, 2013 6:24 PM

this is to fun to watch. after every reported ratbird player leaving all we heard from ravens fans is “that guy is replaceable. our concern is resigning ellerbe”. but now since hes gone too im sure that was all part of ozzies plan too right ravenator? from first to worst. now who you got? sure flacco is signed but he can only complete 48% of his passes to anyone who isnt boldin. ray rice? with the lack of passing game youre going to have now 8-9 men stacked in the box to stop him. top 10 defense? loooooong gone! so you wont be to score points AND keep them from scoring? but im sure in ravenators mind all is well. say what you will about the steelers 8-8 off year….id rather have an off year than the complete dumster fire your team has turned into in the last 36 hours

  64. grs27 says: Mar 12, 2013 6:25 PM

As a Browns fan this is a great start to free agency. Mike Wallace, Anquan Boldin and Ellerbe are out of the division and Kruger jumped to Cleveland. Time for Baltimore to deal with the consequences of Flacco’s contract.

  66. jjthesportsguy says: Mar 12, 2013 6:25 PM

  68. thebonus44 says: Mar 12, 2013 6:26 PM

    You people are so dumb.

They gave Ellerbe 5/35 ! That is ridiculous!

The Ravens have made the playoffs for the past 5 years and won at least one playoff game. You don’t do that by spending 5/35 for an inside linebacker.

    Get real.

  69. putyournameonit says: Mar 12, 2013 6:27 PM

Elite money can be very harmful.

  72. democratsarestupid says: Mar 12, 2013 6:28 PM

Flacco’s cap hit is 6.5 mil. His new contract helped the Ravens, unfortunately other teams valued their players higher than the Ravens did. That usually doesn’t end well for the new team. I’m not a Ravens fan at all but I can’t think of an FA who left and played better than they did in Baltimore. The Ravens are always one of those teams like NE, Pitt, GB, etc who always seem to find a way to compete so they deserve respect.

  73. dickson29 says: Mar 12, 2013 6:29 PM

  77. ravensfan19 says: Mar 12, 2013 6:29 PM

The thing is People forget we had the Cap Space to sign Ellerbe. This had nothing to do with Flacco contract. I think Our Front Office didn’t want to Commit to Ellerbe due to his Injury History.

The 7 Million a Year he’s getting is a Lot for a Inside Linebacker, More than What Ray was getting the last couple years. I would like to kept Ellerbe but were going to have draft a Inside Guy anyway. We still got Most of Our Main guys On D, Suggs, Ngata, Webb, Pollard. I have faith we’ll bring in Good Players around them. Our D will still be Solid Next Year.

Foote was a starter on the number 1 D last year. Is he patrick willis? No. But he’s 30 or 31 with a few years of solid play left.

Burress is a 1 yr vet min deal. If he sucks in camp (or if they are able to draft young replacements), he’s gone. He also gives them a valuable big red zone target they previously lacked. Whats the downside there?

The steelers had 5 losses by 3 points and another one by 6 in which they had 8 fumbles and 3 picks. Go ahead and think they fell off a cliff if you want…i’d be more worried about my team losing 7 starters at least, including your two defensive leaders…

  107. cbass59 says: Mar 12, 2013 6:46 PM

    Bwahahahahahaha!!

This Steeler fan now likes our GM a lot better.

3 starting LBs gone? Boldin gone. Birk. And you draft at the back. I’ve never seen a team pay so much for a SB win, and the Steelers stunk after both recent SB wins. Ravens go 1-5 in AFC North next season.

  108. scoobies05 says: Mar 12, 2013 6:46 PM

um….the ravens have lost no one due to the flacco contract. his cap number is 6.8 this year. the players we lost have gotten better offers elsewhere. thats what happens to good teams. im sure steeler fans have forgotten that. with a cap that barely moved there will be lots of quality vets to be had at great prices. and the ravens have 11 draft picks. oz knows what hes doing. lets see how the rosters look in september when it actually matters. go ravens

  109. Nofoolnodrool says: Mar 12, 2013 6:47 PM

If ravenator owned a car he has no air in his tires but doesn’t know it yet. So much for Ozzie who walks on water. Fan boy are you drying off his feet? What a waste of time.hahahahahahahaha

  110. RavenzGunnerz says: Mar 12, 2013 6:49 PM

You gotta love non ravens fans worried about the state of our team.

Let me tell you something folks, I saw this movie last year, and I am not worried at all.

If I am not worried as a ravens fan, why are you?

  111. baytownbombers says: Mar 12, 2013 6:51 PM

    Breaking News!!!!!
Baltimore has just traded Ravenator to the Miami Dolphins for Jimmy Johnson’s old hair brush and a Reggie Bush jersey. Seriously, who has first shift on his suicide watch? What’s that crumbling sound?

  112. laxcoach37 says: Mar 12, 2013 6:55 PM

I know this post got taken over by the Ravens bashing, but a VERY HAPPY Dolphin Fan here saying this guy cost us NOTHING!!

We cut Carolos Dansby (injured, age 32 and cost $6.3M against the cap). For a young beast that cost pretty much the same… next up who we gonna sign now ???

  113. jimmymarlinsfan says: Mar 12, 2013 6:57 PM

I’m a dolphins fan as well obviously and I love this signing and dumping Dansby. The defense gets quicker and that will help Wake continue to rake in the sacks. Philbin and Ireland had a clear plan in place and they are making it happen. The phins also retained the services of a solid back up Qb in Moore, an above average Wr in Hartline, franchised Starks, and acquired a potential star in Wallace to help Tannehill develop further. Exciting stuff. That said…

The Ravens knew they had to get younger. Obviously they wished to retain Ellerbee but now they can offer more to Reed to get him to stay and get younger through the draft because they feel Flacco is on the upswing in the twilight of the Careers of Brady and Manning

  114. yyyass says: Mar 12, 2013 7:01 PM

Now hold on. We DID lock up our long snapper!

  115. jetsjetsjetsnow says: Mar 12, 2013 7:03 PM

Dolphins are becoming the AFC version of the ” If you can’t win or coach why not buy your team Washington Redskins.” Good luck with the chemistry.

  116. insman1017 says: Mar 12, 2013 7:06 PM

Are all you people really as dumb as you speak???????
The Dolphins haven’t won since Shula…. Mike Wallace wasn’t great with Big Ben and I’m a Raven fanatic and Ellerbe (just like all the others that have left over the years) was a product of OUR SYSTEM… We are the CHAMPS…..Look how many coaches we have put in the NFL…. Stop HATING….. We aren’t going anywhere, we just reload people. I want to hear all of you when we continue our playoff run……AS USUAL…..Idiots.

  117. stillers1229 says: Mar 12, 2013 7:09 PM

Wow. That was fast. No love for the Ravens. What a beautiful day.

  118. iamthefootballjerk says: Mar 12, 2013 7:09 PM

Keep up the chatter Ravens haters. Y’all were saying the same thing, maybe even worse, we we lost our free agents last year. The Ravens do NOT over pay for their role players. This happens to most Super Bowl teams, so there is no panic here in B’more. We still have Rice, Torrey Smith, Suggs, Ngata, with Lardarius Webb coming back. The rest are just pieces of the puzzle.

One note: I do question the Flacco contract, but it really is just a 3 year deal. Regardless, he’s won more postseason games the last five years than your QB.

  119. angrypurplebirds says: Mar 12, 2013 7:13 PM

In 4 years in the league Dannell Ellerbe has never played a full season without getting hurt…food for thought.

  120. clashpoint says: Mar 12, 2013 7:20 PM

The ravens will have a bit harder time drafting this year, since they draft last. They have lost an awful lot of leadership as well as players since last year ended too, and ed reed leaving would be a killer. Though I suspect they might get reed back now, since they aren’t using cap space on all the guys who have gone. He’s older and on the decline, but the ravens really need his leadership now more than ever before. Don’t kid yourselves ravens fans. Its is going to be tough for a while.

  121. xpensivewinos says: Mar 12, 2013 7:34 PM

If Ozzie is the greatest super genius since Wyle E. Coyote, how come they’re in such cap trouble?

  122. Mr. Wright 212 says: Mar 12, 2013 7:35 PM

Didn’t expect this. I thought the Ravens would have kept one of those guys.

Bart Scott, Derrick Mason, Todd Heap, Kelley Gregg, Ben Grubbs, Tom Zibikowski, LaRon McLain, Jarrett Johnson, Landry, Corey Redding – every year the Ravens lose free agents and every year I see the same clowns and chicken littles spewing how the sky is falling and it is all over for the Ravens. I remember these same people posting how dismal our offseason was last year for “only” signing Corey Graham and Jacoby Jones. Actually, I remember a bunch of the “BigBenNoFoolSteelyMcpheeliePrimanti” and other hater posters laughing at the “inept” signing of Jacoby.

In recent years the Ravens just keep responding with division titles, playoff victories and a Super Bowl trophy. I don’t judge the Ravens current offseason or upcoming draft until the following season and sometimes two seasons after. I’m still basking in the glow of the Lombardi and not worrying about a thing. In Oz I trust.

Please. Forgive me for being skeptical of anyone saying “one and done” when the goalposts were moved to “two and done” and so forth with every Ravens playoff win. Why don’t you worry about hemorrhaging your own free agents while signing has-beens.

ok insman you know Ellerbe is a player y’all still have a great team Miami threw crazy $ at him,you are correct we haven’t won since Shula but we are hopefull these moves will help us,I understand you hate Wallace but he’s not with Pittsburgh anymore, enjoy defending your championship…I’m just happy we are making an effort to get better

Newsome and Reese are the two best GMs in each conference. Neither goes out and buys up big names galore. Just plugs in pieces for detail, draft properly and develop internally. That’s why the Ravens are always in contention and why my guys have won two in five years, and blew two golden opportunities to have had four (Burress in ’08 and the collective set of OFF years that everyone on offense had this year).
