Eagles release Nnamdi Asomugha

While it won’t be official until after the league year starts at 4 p.m., today’s the day the Eagles will release cornerback Nnamdi Asomugha, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter.

The move has been coming for some time, but had to occur after the start of the league year for salary cap purposes. When reports came out last week that it was done, reports which were quickly refuted, it was clear it was happening, though the timing was off.

The inevitability doesn’t make it any less alarming, that a player who was so recently at the top of the game is unemployed.

UPDATE 3:46 p.m. ET: The Eagles just put out a statement confirming the move.

“Coach Kelly and I each had a chance to speak with Nnamdi earlier and he took the news with a lot of class,” Eagles general manager Howie Roseman said. “We expected nothing less than that from him. He has been a true pro on and off the field for this organization and our community and we wish him all the best as he continues his NFL career. We spoke to his representatives at the Combine about his future status with the team and wanted to take time to analyze and make a decision. In the end, coach and I both felt we needed to move in a different direction at the cornerback position for 2013 and beyond.”

  1. The Eagles have allowed the rest of you to have our scraps. The legend of Eagles Chip Kelly is set to begin at 4pm today. You will all be beasted by us. We get what we want. You get scraps.

  2. Bye Bye Nnamdi. Never lived up to the hype in Philly. Philly will kill careers….go back to OAK.

    Settle down.

  4. Somebody needa to give up some draft picks b4 he hits the market ..just don’t think Philly was the right spot fir him

  5. @flavordave…

Isn’t this pretty much the same story we heard a few years ago with the “Dream Team”?

How did that one work out for ya’? Yeah, not so good!

    GO STEELERS!

  6. Flavordave and logicalredskin have to be the same guy. Who is the sad Giants or Cowboys fan out there?

  7. Nice now they can overpay for Revis and have the same thing happen in 2 years. E-A-G-……..

  8. I think in the right system, he’ll play better. He won’t get the same type of money, but he’ll get the guaranteed $4M from the Eagles this year.

  9. Dream Team…

    Dynasty…

    Idiots…

Only one really applies when describing the train wreck that is the Eagles…

So much for buying that championship. When will teams learn? the Skins tried it with Bruce Smith, Deion Sanders etc and more recently 100 million dollar man Albert Haynesworth and got zip, then the Eagles try it with the flashy corner swooping in as the mystery team to snatch Nnamdi away….whooooo!, and of course Jason Babin, Steve Smith and the always classy Vince Young. And guess what you got, a zero just like Washington before you.

Try mocking the Giants sometime, then maybe you will win a Superbowl.

  10. Samuel left. Asomugha left. DRC is about to leave. These guys did not look very good at times in Philly. Surely they can’t all be terrible/chopped liver at the same time. I think there is more to do with Philly’s circus than their ability to play.

  11. Looks like both Namdi and Revis… Once thought to be the 2 best corners in the league, are available for teams to haggle over! One has an injured ACL and is a diva… The other is classy but cant play. Who will pick these two up now?

Glad the Cowboys lost the Nnamdi Sweepstakes a couple years ago.

    32 33

Yeah I know. Look at all those playoff wins dallas had without out him

  13. When the Eagles go on a spending spree in FA……it takes us 2 years to undo it. It sets the rest of you fools back for years.

Guess who’s got over $40 million in cap space? The Dream Team.

The Eagles get what they want except winning, relevance or Superbowls.

At least they have a QB with two working legs

Big talk coming from the fan of a team with no SB wins. Now, get back to topics you might know something about: ring bologna and Schmidts.

All 3 buddy.. while your team shoots itself in the foot by hiring Plaxico… Enjoy

Are you really illogicalvoicesays using a different name?

  18. Im a lifelong Eagles fan, and I don’t have a clue what planet Flavordave is on right now. While confidence is perfectly fine, Id like to just say that this moron doesn’t speak for the rest of us.

As for Nnamdi, all we heard before he donned the midnight green was how he was “Soooo good at what he does, that QBs don’t even throw to his side of the field!” This pathetic excuse for a CB was widely regarded as a top-3 player at his position, with many people believing only Revis was better. Asomugha consistently got torched by everyone this season, whether they were good, bad, or in between…Nnamdi got beat. In the span of 1 season, this overpaid and overrated bum went from being in the top tier of cornerbacks in the NFL, to not even being worth a spot on our roster. If you ask me, Assumooga isn’t worthy of being regarded as a top-20 cornerback moving forward.

  19. Playing in Phily is like playing for a circus. Overhyped, flashy, and no substance. He’ll do much better playing on TEAM and not with 10 other individuals doing their own thing. Welcome to MN.

Dream Team part 2 begins. LOL

And your creativity and originality ended a long time ago. Care to be a parrot and spit out another 2 year old joke?

  22. The Dream Team consisted of adding a 30 year old Nnamdi Asomugha who had already been in the league for 8-9 years, Babin, another guy who had been tossed around and 30 years old…Cullen Jenkins, another 30 year old. Not much of a dream team honestly. Nursing home.

Yeah, they’re definitely the same guy. Mr. Wright 212 and boysroll are, respectively, the comparable Giants and Eagles fans, but they aren’t logicalvoice/flavordave.

  24. most of you don’t understand defensive scheme and fit.

Nnamdi nearly exclusively played press man coverage for the Raiders during his best years as a Corner. That was per Al Davis’s directive to his coaches to play predominantly man coverage.

Nmandi plays press man coverage probably better than any other corner in the league. But he doesn’t play off man (which makes playing him as a Nickelback unfeasible), press zone or deep zone (Cover 3 or Quarters for example).

So if your team’s defense has a use for an exclusive press man corner, than Nnandi your guy. But most teams mix up their coverages to certain degrees so it sort of limits who use him.

  25. I’d be super leery of signing this guy. The talk of “he was used incorrectly!” garbage is just that…flaming garbage.

In Oakland he saw roughly half as many targets as the other corner (Chris Johnson) in his hey day yet had about league average pass defended ratio (compared to Johnson who was well above average). And they couldn’t stop the run. Why throw at Asomugha when you could light up Johnson? Asomugha certainly wasn’t snagging a ton of INTs.

I posit Asomugha was simply the better of two CBs on a D that couldn’t defend the run, so teams: 1) didn’t need to throw a ton and 2) threw way more at the worse CB.

Asomugha constantly got compared to Revis by the media, but Revis had far, far better CB defensive stats (yards/completion was 20% lower than Asomugha from 2008-2010; completions per attempt 25% lower).

In essence, Asomugha was more hype than ability in my mind, and was shown up when he lined up next to a more competent CB.

  26. Can morons (pro writers included) shut up about “dream team” now that every single one of them is gone? …including the coaches that wanted them here.

  29. Anyone who thinks Nnamdi was just in the wrong system clearly did not watch any Eagles games last year. They misused him in 2011; in 2012 they let him play where and how he wanted and he got worse. It’s bizarre that he fell apart this quickly, but he’s done.

  30. BTW “dream team” doesnt bother fans cuz we werent the morons who said it. We just get tired of hearin stupid people repeat the words of an even stupider person… Vince Young. So keep soundin as smart as VY.

  31. OMG can we get over this dream team thing its so old but someone brings it up everytime you hear about one of these guys. News flash everyone he said “ITS LIKE A DREAM TEAM!!!

  32. Don’t hate the player hate the system….Filthadelphia’s defense looked like a bunch of clowns stumbling out of a mini-car under the big top….

If you’re going to rehash the tired old dream team thing at least include Vince Young since he was the one who said the words that one time.

  34. All these people talking trash as if signing Nnamdi was a dumb move, but almost every team wanted him when he was available. Hindsight is 20/20.

  35. Gotta love Philly fans trying to justify themselves and failing miserably. Peyton Manning introduced his father to Nnamdi at a Pro Bowl by explaining how amazed he was with Aso’s ability to correctly diagnose a read from Manning. One of the all time greats doesn’t usually go out of his way for the hype.

  36. The Philly fan base don’t deserve him nor any good players. You people are perennial LOSERS for a reason & it’s reflected in everything about the Eagles.

What did Asante say again: “playing fantasy football with the owners money”…you’re a joke Philly.

  37. Only the Eagles could sign an all world CB and in a couple years strip him down to an unemployed bum. And then have the audacity to get on PFT and take a run at Jerry Jones.

Spend a fortune on a dream team (love that term 4getu-dbag) and have last place in the east and a 2-14 record to show for it. Nice job.

Congratulations Eagles you made Jerry look like a genius. He was going to sign Asomugha.

  38. dallascowboydishingthereal that is some of the most retarded babble I have read on here. How is Jerry Jones smart for wanting to sign Nnamdi but not landing him. Also the Eagles didn’t go 2-14. I have a feeling you forgot your meds.

  39. Flavordave does not like the level of disrespect hes reading on this board. Florio does an excellent job providing you content, and I provide the truth.

Oh my bad. The Eagles had a much more respectable 4 wins last season. That’s way better.

I will attempt to explain it to you since based on your name, whcih list every lousy eagle QB in history, you’re clearly a little slow.

Jerry would have made yet another bad FA signing had you idiots not pushed him out of the way and signed Asomug. The eagles kept Jerry from making himself look bad.

Now settle down and get back to bed. Your mommy is waiting on you.
