Getty ImagesIf the Lions still want Jason Hanson, they have their chance.
The veteran kicker, who will turn 43 this summer, has decided he wants to play again this year, according to USA Today‘s Mike Garafolo. He’ll be an unrestricted free agent at 4 p.m.
He went back and forth this offseason, not sure whether he wanted to commit to a 22nd NFL season.
He’s been a remarkably consistent player, and frankly, until he falls off a cliff performance-wise, the Lions should keep him around.

Hanson is as cold as ice.
Love it! One of my all time favorite Lions. Now go get Reggie Bush signed Mayhew.
What else would he want to do? Of course he wants to keep kicking.
Why? His leg is not what it used to be for range or kickoffs, he is expensive, and last year rookies proved they can be relevant…
They’ll find a way to keep Jason Hanson. Thanks, Jason!
Has he ever won at Lambeau? That might be the only thing he has yet to accomplish (other than of course a SB title).
He’s our generation’s George Blanda (or was that Vinny Testeverde?). Blanda played until he was 48, and this guy played with Barry Sanders before his prime! Until he pulls a David Akers I think they should keep him.
Although there is a LOOOONG list of Lions boneheaded moves, kicker has not been one of them. Consider, since 1980 the Lions have had two kickers – Eddie Murray and Hanson. Really good kickers and quality people.
It’s great that Hanson wants to keep kicking……but is he willing to keep kicking for minimum compensation? I think that’s what every Lions fan should be asking.
Here’s some perspective…
I was 5 when Jason Hanson got drafted. I’m three years away from 30.
He has at least 2 years left.
