Thats 2 more SB wins that they have over a lot of other franchises in the league.

E.g. Buffalo Bills, Cincinnati Bengals, Cleveland Browns, Houston Texans, Jacksonville Jaguars, San Diego Chargers, Philadelphia Eagles, Detroit Lions, Minnesota Vikings, Atlanta Falcons, Carolina Panthers, Arizona Cardinals, and the Seattle Seahawks

If Ozzie is such a genius then why has your team only made it to the big game twice in 12 years, just asking ???? The better GM's have been there more often such as New England and Pittsburgh. Live up your super bowl win this year because when Flaccos salary counts 14 million towards the cap next year and you will have to gut more star players ,you will be bottom feeders for many years to come but thank goodness you signed your franchize QB

Flacco counts 6.8 agains salary cap this year. Who cares about Pollard, he was killed in coverage in the superbowl this year and he can be replaced cheaply. Kruger part time player, ellerbe, injury prone, pollard old. Quan will be missed but hey so was Derrick Mason, Flacco’s go to receiver early in his career and the MVP was able to get over that as well. Sit back clowns and watch the Wizard of Oz work!
----------------------------------------------

I love it! All of a sudden Flacco goes from the guy who was just part of the machine, to THE player who makes it all happen! All those other guys, nah, no worry, they meant NOTHING! 'Cuz as long as we got the great Flacco, it's all good!

"Clown" is right. Both entertaining and hilarious!

Hey, question for you, chum. How much does Flacco count against the cap the year after next? Or in three years? And -- listen carefully now -- how much will that leave for other guys who would be signing for MORE THAN JUST ONE YEAR, LIKE MOST PLAYERS DO?

Do you see why this "but Flacco only counts for 6.8 mil next year" thing is so dumb? If you don't by now, you're pretty hopeless.

Hey, enoughofthat, notwithstanding your hurt feelings for any negative comments in the past about Steelers cap woes, you're still not making much sense.

The fact that Pollard represented a future obligation beyond this year -- the cap-friendly year as far as Flacco's new deal is concerned -- doesn't factor into this.

Why cut Pollard now, in a year when they could afford him. If the concern is that Flacco starts to eat up cap three years from now, why not keep Pollard for two more and then cut him later, when you actually may need to? If Flacco represents some sort of future problem for the team, okay, but cutting Pollard now was not necessary. He only saved them $500,000 or so this year -- a year they didn't need savings. They could have easily kept him this year regardless of what the future held.

This wasn't about money.

More Ravens fans hypocracy. You laugh at the Steelers for deferring cap to later years but then you applaud how Flacco's cap number is so low this year? Do you Einsteins actually realize that all multi-year contracts are weighted so that the cap hit is the lowest point the 1st year and gradually rises to its highest point in the final year? Having said that, do you realize what Flacco's cap hit will be at the end of the new contract? This is no different than deferring cap to contract players to later years. Hypocracy much?

turdfurgerson68 says:

And if Flacco’s contract has nothing to do with the dismantling of the Ravens, then what is it?

Other than Lewis’ retirement and so normal off-season tweaks, why would you gut you’re team.

Please defend your: “He’s on the books for 6.8 million this year..” argument.

Sorry Flacco defenders, you gotta look long term on his deal…it ain’t a one yr contract folks. It’s crippling in fact.

-------------------------------------------

Boldin and Pollard were each entering the final years of their deals. They would have been big money veterans when the Ravens will have to sign Torrey Smith next year, as well as Pitta and/or Dickson. The team is cleaning house now to avoid having to do so this time next year. It only looks particularly awful right now since the team is coming off a Super Bowl win.

Nobody cared when the Giants let Super Bowl 46 hero Mario Manningham walk for some reason. And what do you know, the Giants missed the playoffs this past season! Couple that with the team dumping Osi, and I find it amusing that nobody seems to care about that. But pay a Super Bowl MVP, and even though he only is set to make $6.8 million this season, he is the guy everyone points to as the scapegoat.

Flacco is the 4th highest paid player against the cap on the Ravens' roster this season. If he was set to make $20 million this year, you might have a leg to stand on. Considering the Ravens pushed his cap hit to 2016 - after Suggs and Ngata come off the books - the team isn't crippled because of his contract.

Fans who like to play GM and think they're smarter than the guys in front offices piss me off more than any other kind of fan out there today.

I'm confused... Did Flacco only sign for one year? You're right, Ravens fans, his cap hit is only 7 million this year. But what is it next year, and the year after that?? If Ozzie is the genius that you all think he is, then don't you think he's looking into the future a little here? This fire sale has everything to do with Flacco's contract. If you think otherwise, you're completely delusional! And if you had the chance to ask Ozzie personally, he would probably be the first one to admit it to ya. I'm not knocking Flacco's game at all. Think he's a dam good QB. But I think the Ravens would have been better letting him walk and keeping the core of the team. Ravens did a heck of a job drafting and grooming him. If Ozzie is as great as you think, they could of done it again with someone else. All you Ravens fans hate Flacco's contract because you know what it means for the future of your franchise. You just don't wanna admit it.

“one and done”….uhhhhh are you aware of a little thing called SB 35? And it’s “relevant”….typical Steeler dolt

I was so excited on your team that I spelled a word incorrectly. Wow. That's all you have. Try reading and comprehensiom. The one and done reference was the fact that you will never see the super bowl again. DUHHHHH !!!! Did I spell that rite ? Right ? Wright ? Idiot.
Then there's math...SB 35 I believe we are approaching SB 48 that my friend validates my point that Once in a blue moon you make it to a Super Bowl. Since the last time you were there, we've been there 3 times. You should be proud of your middle school education.

just to be clear the guy is not a cheap shot artist.

Brady - he got blocked to the ground and dove at whatever he could to try to make the tackle or disrupt the pass

Welker - he was just standing there. It was a non contact injury

If Gronkowski didn't drag him like Jeff Van Gundy for 3 yards he wouldn't have gotten injured.

He delivered that knockout on Ridlay in playoffs but he was coming in to make the tackle and Ridlay also put his head down. So it wasn't like he was out head hunting

That being said as a Pats fan I would like to see a hitter like that in backfield. He is a damn good player and it seems he is always the expendable cap casualty wherever he goes. Not cheap money but just enough that the team needs the cap room.

I love the Ravens. (I think) I'm sorry to see all these guys go. However, I remember last year when we lost Jarrett Johnson, Corey Redding, Ben Grubbs, Nakamura, Zibakowski, etc. and thinking Ravens would be lucky to go 8-8 in 2012, given the tough schedule they faced. I remember feeling the same way a couple of years ago when Kelly Gregg, Todd Heap and Derrick Mason were cut. Then I started thinking about the long list of former Ravens players who were either cut or who signed big free agency contracts and who ended up sucking on their new teams. Bottom line: I'm pretty sure ther Ravens FO knows a little bit more about what they're doing than all of you posters, most of whom simply hate the Ravens because they're better than your teams. Since 2000, 9 playoff years, 2 super bowl chanpionships, etc. 2013 will be no different. Bank on it.

Love the guys who came in and committed to playing ravens football like q and pollard

But this is what the ravens do every year

SBs bring out the haters which is cool, definitely not used to so much ravens coverage

But yeah they've been doing this stuff since before flacco was on the team much less got a monster contract

And they stayed winning through it all, no other team has had the consistency or success in the last five years period

The only time the ravens have had less success with Ozzie was when they tried to repeat te first SB by extending all the contracts then cap purging a year later

Led to 5 years or so of mediocrity due to bad planning an contracts

Oz goes against conventional wisdom and it mostly works really well

Conventional wisdom is against him now, so I feel good abou it

Chuck Barkley once said, I don't listen to people because people are stupid

Keep up the good work oz and everyone else

Everyone seems to think that Pollard is a cap casualty, but I don't even think that's the issue here.

Cutting Pollard only saves them $1 million in cap space. That's because he'll still count $2.5 million in dead money against the cap this year after his prorated bonus accelerates into 2013.

Furthermore, now that he's cut, they'll have to still sign someone to replace him on the roster. Even the cheapest safety is going to cost them at least half a million. So, at best, this move saves them half a million on the cap.

There's no way they cut him simply to save that paltry amount. There clearly is another motivation at work here. He was pretty banged up, but played through it, so I don't think it's injury.

The knock on him has been he's a big hitter but so-so in coverage. This may just be a case where the team thinks they can upgrade the position, particularly with a lot of safeties in the upcoming draft. That seems like a stretch, but it's more plausible than claiming this is a cost-savings move.

"patriotenvy"

Coming from one Patriots fan to another you are a great example of why most NFL fans don't like the Patriots or their fans. You think your team and its players are so above it all. If you wouldn't want Bernard Pollard on your team then you simply don't understand the game of football. Do you really believe Pollard is "below" the Patriots? If so, why? You do realize the Patriots have just as many dirt bags and felons as just about every other team in the NFL don't you? Your comment is the height of ignorance and stupidity.

If the Pats wish to sign Pollard I will volunteer to go to Baltimore and drive him back here because he is EXACTLY what the Patriots need.

And yes, if the Pats do sign him, you and I both know you will be right back in front of your TV rooting for the Pats again next season, telling anyone who will listen that now that Pollard is a Patriot, "...he's changed...", because I'm sure you are also the typical Patriots fan that thinks Bill Belichick is never wrong.

@edisbetterthantroy,

those are decent arguments, I think your secondary will be fine, but you forget a couple of things, who are you linebackers? you have one back (Suggs) on a team that operates in a 3-4. You also traded away Boldin for a 6th round pick, are you seriously going to tell me they will replace Boldin's production with a 6th round pick? Pita is a nice piece, but he is only a "nice" piece, not a real game changer. I like Torrey Smith, but he isn't a blue collar reciever, he is a nine route. Ray Rice is a very good running back, but 3rd and 29 isn't going to happen a whole lot and Flacco doesn't really have much of an option opposite Smith. You can color this all you want, but it looks terrible for them to lose some of these guys. Kruger I get, but Ellerbe (FA) and the Boldin trade are just stupid. Flacco only costs $7 mill against the cap this year, then why trade his most consistant weapon?
