Hey, question for you, chum. How much does Flacco count against the cap the year after next? Or in three years? And — listen carefully now — how much will that leave for other guys who would be signing for MORE THAN JUST ONE YEAR, LIKE MOST PLAYERS DO?

Do you see why this “but Flacco only counts for 6.8 mil next year” thing is so dumb? If you don’t by now, you’re pretty hopeless.

The fact that Pollard represented a future obligation beyond this year — the cap-friendly year as far as Flacco’s new deal is concerned — doesn’t factor into this.

Why cut Pollard now, in a year when they could afford him. If the concern is that Flacco starts to eat up cap three years from now, why not keep Pollard for two more and then cut him later, when you actually may need to? If Flacco represents some sort of future problem for the team, okay, but cutting Pollard now was not necessary. He only saved them $500,000 or so this year — a year they didn’t need savings. They could have easily kept him this year regardless of what the future held.

This wasn’t about money.

Other than Lewis’ retirement and so normal off-season tweaks, why would you gut you’re team.

Boldin and Pollard were each entering the final years of their deals. They would have been big money veterans when the Ravens will have to sign Torrey Smith next year, as well as Pitta and/or Dickson. The team is cleaning house now to avoid having to do so this time next year. It only looks particularly awful right now since the team is coming off a Super Bowl win.

Nobody cared when the Giants let Super Bowl 46 hero Mario Manningham walk for some reason. And what do you know, the Giants missed the playoffs this past season! Couple that with the team dumping Osi, and I find it amusing that nobody seems to care about that. But pay a Super Bowl MVP, and even though he only is set to make $6.8 million this season, he is the guy everyone points to as the scapegoat.

Flacco is the 4th highest paid player against the cap on the Ravens’ roster this season. If he was set to make $20 million this year, you might have a leg to stand on. Considering the Ravens pushed his cap hit to 2016 – after Suggs and Ngata come off the books – the team isn’t crippled because of his contract.

Fans who like to play GM and think they’re smarter than the guys in front offices piss me off more than any other kind of fan out there today.

If Gronkowski didn’t drag him like Jeff Van Gundy for 3 yards he wouldn’t have gotten injured.

He delivered that knockout on Ridlay in playoffs but he was coming in to make the tackle and Ridlay also put his head down. So it wasn’t like he was out head hunting

That being said as a Pats fan I would like to see a hitter like that in backfield. He is a damn good player and it seems he is always the expendable cap casualty wherever he goes. Not cheap money but just enough that the team needs the cap room.

SBs bring out the haters which is cool, definitely not used to so much ravens coverage

But yeah they’ve been doing this stuff since before flacco was on the team much less got a monster contract

And they stayed winning through it all, no other team has had the consistency or success in the last five years period

The only time the ravens have had less success with Ozzie was when they tried to repeat te first SB by extending all the contracts then cap purging a year later

Led to 5 years or so of mediocrity due to bad planning an contracts

Oz goes against conventional wisdom and it mostly works really well

Cutting Pollard only saves them $1 million in cap space. That’s because he’ll still count $2.5 million in dead money against the cap this year after his prorated bonus accelerates into 2013.

Furthermore, now that he’s cut, they’ll have to still sign someone to replace him on the roster. Even the cheapest safety is going to cost them at least half a million. So, at best, this move saves them half a million on the cap.

There’s no way they cut him simply to save that paltry amount. There clearly is another motivation at work here. He was pretty banged up, but played through it, so I don’t think it’s injury.

The knock on him has been he’s a big hitter but so-so in coverage. This may just be a case where the team thinks they can upgrade the position, particularly with a lot of safeties in the upcoming draft. That seems like a stretch, but it’s more plausible than claiming this is a cost-savings move.

I love it, if you root for any other team, you are a hater. That is the odd Baltimore mindset…My wife is from there….so glad we got out of there.

I love Pollard and that clean hit on Brady. I hope he never plays for the patriots but he plays in the AFCEast. That way he gets to blow them up twice a year.

those are decent arguments, I think your secondary will be fine, but you forget a couple of things, who are you linebackers? you have one back (Suggs) on a team that operates in a 3-4. You also traded away Boldin for a 6th round pick, are you seriously going to tell me they will replace Boldin’s production with a 6th round pick? Pita is a nice piece, but he is only a “nice” piece, not a real game changer. I like Torrey Smith, but he isn’t a blue collar reciever, he is a nine route. Ray Rice is a very good running back, but 3rd and 29 isn’t going to happen a whole lot and Flacco doesn’t really have much of an option opposite Smith. You can color this all you want, but it looks terrible for them to lose some of these guys. Kruger I get, but Ellerbe (FA) and the Boldin trade are just stupid. Flacco only costs $7 mill against the cap this year, then why trade his most consistant weapon?

This is what happens in todays NFL, you’re never going to be able to keep all your players or all your coaches. After you win the Superbowl, players and coaches always leave to better themselves….
…Its bitter sweet to see this happening to the Ravens, but I’ve watched it happen to the Steeler too.

It happened to the Patriots too, but that doesn’t stop the “what have they won since spygate?” people who completely disregard that the Pats don’t have the same players they had when they won those Super Bowls. Brady and Belichick are not the entire team.

And for you Ravens fans telling US we’re dumb because “Flacco doesn’t count that much against the cap next year” you better go out and count how many players only sign contracts for ONE YEAR. Duh. Do the math, Einsteins.
