Cardinals sign Drew Stanton to three-year deal

Drew Stanton AP

The Cardinals have added another competitor to a crowded group at quarterback.

Drew Stanton,¬†formerly the Colts’ backup quarterback, signed a three-year contract with Arizona, agent Mike McCartney said Wednesday.

Stanton didn’t play in a regular-season game with Indianapolis a season ago, but he did work with then-Colts offensive coordinator / interim head coach Bruce Arians.

Now, Stanton will reunite with Arians.

With Stanton joining the mix, the Cardinals have five quarterbacks: Stanton, Brian Hoyer (a restricted free agent), Kevin Kolb, John Skelton and Ryan Lindley. Clearly, they won’t be keeping all of them.

The 28-year-old Stanton garnered the final spot in PFT’s Free Agent Hot 100.

If no other QB signs, I predict Stanton to be starting Week 1. I think he’s a lot better than advertised and already knows the Arians system, which is a classic leg up in a mediocre stable of QBs (think JT O’Sullivan and Mike Martz’s 49ers).

Stanton is a career 3rd string QB!!! Former indy players coming in and ex steelers the Cardinals can be the Colts/Steelers West

Waiting for the Kolb cut & the freeing up of about $7.5-10.5 mil in cap space.

5 QBs and not a single one that should start for an NFL team.

    Poor Larry…

This is a pretty good signing. I’ve heard many Lions fans say that the guy never really got a fair shot in Detroit. The Cards are probably keeping Stanton, Hoyer and a rookie. So long, Skelton and Lindley. It wasn’t nice knowing ya.

Draft Eric Fisher or Lane Johnson with the #7, then come back in at the 2nd half of the 1st round to grab the 2nd QB (Manuel Glennon, Nassib… whoever is highest on your board.)

sad to say, but stanton could be the starter there, cause there isnt many other options, and stanton was in BA offense last year

Stanton will be their best Quarterback.

    Best of “Luck”, Drew.

I had very high hope you would re-sign with the Colts. if only you were 101 on PFT’s 100 list … Had to go and bring attention to yourself, didn’t you?

Kolb, Skelton should be gone….Stanton, not really sold on him, trade a 3rd round pick for Matt Flynn if not draft a QB.

The chaos in AZ QB’s continues……..

    and still no offensive line

I do feel kinda bad fold Kolb since he was decent last year, but enough is enough. I’m optimistic about any QB that isn’t named Kolb, Lindley, Skelton or Hoyer….or Anderson, or Hall, or Leinart…

Please cut Kolb! Please cut Kolb!

Stanton is a solid QB. Hopefully, working with BA in AZ, he will get the opportunity for playing time he deserves. There was no real future for him in Indy with Luck and Harnish on the roster. He is a contender to be the starter for the Cardinals.

Some of you folks are nuts. Drew Stanton should not be starting anywhere in the NFL, not even Arizona. He has never been good. He wasn’t good enough to win anything of significance in the NCAA and he hasn’t done a thing to point to in the NFL. He got starts in Detroit. He simply isn’t good enough. He is a career third stringer. That’s it. That’s all.

Stanton is solid but average. It says something when another teams 3rd stringer is good enough to be your starter. I hope it works out for the Cards.

Stanton x Hoyer = Sparty on!
