The Chiefs were busy on the first day of free agency and they’re going to try to keep the ball rolling on Wednesday with wide receiver Donnie Avery.
Jason La Canfora of CBSSports.com reports that Avery will visit the Chiefs as Kansas City looks for a receiver to team with Dwayne Bowe in their 2013 offense. Presumably, the Chiefs are interested in using Avery’s speed to help keep defenses from paying to much attention to their No. 1 receiver while also creating the opportunity to take a shot or two down the field.
That’s the best of what Avery can bring to the table, but his positives were greatly mitigated by drops during the 2012 season. Avery wound up with 60 catches for 781 yards, but the numbers would have been much bigger if not for several key drops of Andrew Luck’s passes. One of the most notable came on a third down in the red zone during the fourth quarter of Indy’s playoff loss to the Ravens, halting ideas about a comeback.
Avery ranks 77th on our list of the top 100 free agents and he’d join quarterback Alex Smith, cornerback Dunta Robinson, tight end Anthony Fasano, quarterback Chase Daniel and defensive lineman Mike DeVito as new faces to join the Chiefs since Andy Reid came to town.
