Panthers expected to keep Derek Anderson

Derek Anderson AP

The Panthers are getting serious about joining free agency.

Real serious.

According to Joe Person of the Charlotte Observer, the Panthers are expected to retain backup quarterback Derek Anderson, keeping him from a double reunion with coach Rob Chudzinski and the Browns.

Anderson went to a Pro Bowl when Chudzinski was calling plays in Cleveland, but didn’t have a good feeling on his way out the door, saying Browns fans “don’t deserve a winner.”

Keeping him behind Cam Newton gives the Panthers a degree of security, as they try to maintain some continuity with Mike Shula replacing Chudzinski as their play-caller.

The Panthers are apparently also working the fringes of the market. According to Albert Breer of the NFL Network, cornerback Drayton Florence is on his way to Charlotte for a physical. They need depth in the secondary with the release of Chris Gamble and Captain Munnerlyn a free agent, and Florence would likely be an affordable addition.

And the Cats are keeping oft-injured and fragile Thomas Davis and Jon Beeson, both of whom were awarded huge contracts by Hurley and Richardson, while at the same time dumping James Anderson.

I don’t know about other Panther fans, but I have a real bad feeling about the upcoming season. The vibe coming out of Panther headquarters in Charlotte doesn’t feel good.

Very good thing he won’t end up in Cleveland, the fans would destroy him.

Thank God! Browns fans have suffered long enough with bad quarterback play!

Funny that Cleveland fans dont want him haha, considering he’s an amazing asset to have as a backup QB and top 3 backups in the league right now.

I dont blame fans for not wanting him after what he said but jeez, you have nothing at QB!

As if anyone (who matters) brought THAT up as a possibility. Where do you guys come up with this stuff?

There’s both truth and BS in that statement. Yep, Anderson is definitely above average coming off the bench. I’ve followed his whole career, and that’s his exact pattern: play well coming off the bench and completely fall apart as soon as he becomes a starter. So why would Cleveland want him? We already have three QBs who’d be a decent backup anywhere in the league. Don’t want or need another one- especially one that burns his bridges and freaks out on the press.

You’re “nothing at QB” statement is wrong. Weeden looked lost at times, no doubt. But he also had several games where he looked more consistent, more effective, and a better passer than the Browns have seen since Bernie Kosar. You know, like Anderson did in his freak season in 2007. The Browns QB situation is far from settled, but we have much more than “nothing” and of course Derek Anderson would bring zero to the table. Waste of space here.

Anderson couldn’t beat out John Skelton or Ryan Lindley in AZ. ‘Nuff said.

This is a good and unerrated move glad we are keeping him in house. This is big for Cam’s development, plus DA has looked good coming in off the bench. I dont get a bad vibe coming from the panthers. I feel we are still talented enough on offense to make noise and the D made big leaps with our pass rush. Im not scared of any team in our division. We just gotta hit on our draft picks this year. Right now most of these teams are overpaying for mid level talent. I am kind of glad we r broke this year to put more pressure on the guys making the draft picks.

Thanks to former GM Marty Hurney, we can’t do ANYTHING in the draft due to cap.
