You pay for future performance not past. Welker is getting up their in age and even though he had a lil resurgence recently he still has looked to be slowing down. I hate the Patriots and BB but I dont see whats wrong with a $6 million per year offer. I think its dead on for what Welker will be worth for the length of the contract. He will probably be worth a little more then 6 in year 1 and a little less in year 2. Which will end up evening out.

You got to take into account the Brady bump and soon to be Manning bump. The guys numbers are inflated bc of his qb. The Pats already pay Brady a boatload and a big reason they do that is bc he makes everyone around him better. So why should they get burnt at both ends of the stick. They shouldnt be expected to pay Welker like a superstar when they are already paying someone else to make him into one.

Thats the same reason why no one offered him anything more then 6. Bc even tho he's a very good player it was Brady that made him into a superstar player. Its the same reason why if he puts up another 90+ catchs & 1,000+ yards season front offices around the league still wont feel like they missed out. Bc they will know Manning had a big part in those stats. And that if he would have signed to their team his numbers would be closer to sub 65 catch & sub 1,000 yards.

elimanningup says:
“Tom Brady = system quarterback. There’s a reason why he has the skill set of a 6th round pick.

Product of Bill Belichick’s system and Dante Scarnecchia’s brick wall offensive linemen.

His glaring weaknesses are: Unable to throw effectively from a muddy pocket. Goes bananas under pressure. Zero lateral mobility, can’t throw effective on the run. Throws a horribly inaccurate deep ball. Needs lots of time in a perfectly clean pocket to make easy decisions and easy throws.”
___________________________________

Amen brother! Lets nor forget this is the same system that made Matt Cassel look like a passable starting QB.

The entire offense is predicated on quick slants, where Welker was a beast, and seem routes with their 2 TEs.

Most times Brady has 2 mins in a clean pocket to make his reads. This is because of 2 factors: an awesome O-line, and the league ensuring Brady’s safety by way of flagging any opposing player who dared get within a foot of Brady’s shadow.

elimanningup, you are dead right about Brady’s performance when under any duress.
-----------------

Agreed, and the person who posted they won (cheated) to their sb wins with good defense, that was all cheating as well, they had the defensive signals.....witness the actual football beatdown the steelers put on marcia in pittsburgh, crushed them up and down the field, suddenly in the playoffs......even hines noted they were CALLING OUT OUR PLAYS....etc....easy to make big pick offs when you know whats coming....

No. Gisele is probably happy WW is gone. She’s the fool who ran her mouth about how TB was let down by his WRs in SB 46. I despise her just for that. TB never big times his teammates like that. It’s one thing I really appreciate about him. TB wasn’t exactly flawless in that game himself, he made 2 pretty costly errors.

I’ll never say WW was a system wr. He was good in Mia, that’s why the Pats wanted him. He was good in NE. He will be good in Den. He’s good. What he isn’t is young, and no amount of money can buy that.

Ron Borges writes that the Patriots treat their players as commodities. What else is new. I supported the players in the strike and think that owners have what amounts to an illegal trust.

That said, players like Welker that want both top dollar and the opportunity to end their career as a marquee franchise player are just not going to get both. The extra $2MM Welker appears to have gotten in a contract (reports indicate their were incentives to raise what he would get from the Pats) would easily be topped by Welker in endorsements and post career earnings in New England. He would have forever been linked to Tom Brady, and been elected to to the Patriots Hall of Fame if not the NFL HOF. He had the rare opportunity to be a Patriot for life but that requires a small hometown discount and subordination to what's best for the team, or at least what Belichick thinks is best for the team.

Welker is a great player and a great guy who will be missed but it was his choice.

Tbe source close to Brady sounds like some goof on this blog. I don't think is that upset. He would have known the Patriots were not going to offer Welker more than 10 mill. Come on! Welker had 10 mill for one year last year. Anyone could have predicted that 10 mill wouldn't have gotten it done for two years.

It doesn't matter. Moss will resign this week with the Pats says a source of mine as will Urlacher.
The real surprise comes when Woodson signs as well. Good luck PATs these vets should help control the shoot out you always seem to get in. And when you are looking at a Denver- New England AFC title game defense is the key.

Ouch! Amendola isn't even close to Welker. Brady knows this and he's telling a source that. Even worse he's going to Denver, a team that will be in the playoffs, and Welker will have insight on how to stop the Pats offense. THATS WHAT YOU GET FOR NOT TAKING CARE OF THEIR OWN. He's only caught the most passes in the league the last 5 years for you, he deserved the raise.

As a pats fan I'd like to see them a) sign Jennings or b) trade mallet to the browns for their 2nd rd pick and then trade the 29th pick in the draft to the giants for Cruz. Resign Edelman as insurance incase amendola gets hurt during the season, then resign Vollmer and Woodhead and your offense will be fine.

On defense resign Talib if not go after Brent Grimes or Sean Smith, resign Arrington and sign another cb like cox. Sign Ed Reed if not go after one of the many other serviceable hard hitting safeties available. Lastly look at signing a pass rusher like Osi or Abraham. With these moves or even some of them they can get back to a Super Bowl and win.

as a lifelong and HONEST patriots fan im floored by welker leaving but i predicted months ago if he left itd only be to denver. amendola cannot stay healthy like the two tight ends we have and our offense will struggle mightily without wes. this was a STUPID move based on the rift between the coach and Wes. im so sick of hearing pats fans say welker wasnt worth it and that this is a better move. it isnt. the most important variable here is that welker stays on the field EVERY year. he played with a bad ankle all last year while his replacement cant put a knee pad on without going to IR. its going to cost them next year when their tight ends and new WR are all injured. we will never win another ring with stupid moves like this and any patriot fan who says otherwise doesnt live in reality.

elimanningup says:
"Tom Brady = system quarterback.

Needs lots of time in a perfectly clean pocket to make easy decisions and easy throws."

This is because of 2 factors: an awesome O-line, and the league ensuring Brady's safety by way of flagging any opposing player who dared get within a foot of Brady's shadow.

elimanningup, you are dead right about Brady's performance when under any duress.

He should be mad! He reworks his deal and gives them 3 more years for 27 mil so they have cap room to do things like resign his go-to guy and they follow that up by low-balling Welker with a laughable offer and then replacing him with a guy who hasn't played an entire season yet after he bolts to Denver to catch passes from Brady's nemesis all because the Pats wouldn't up the anti another 2 mil to keep him around. WHAT A JOKE!!
