Wes Welker “very likely” to land with Denver

Denver Broncos v New England Patriots Getty Images

Here’s yet another indication that the Broncos could be serious about adding Wes Welker.

Greg Bedard of the Boston Globe reported Wednesday that Welker was “very likely” to sign with Denver, according to an unnamed league source the veteran NFL writer quoted.

The 31-year-old Welker hauled in 118 passes for 1,354 yards and six touchdowns in 2012 for New England. His addition to the Broncos’ offense — were it to happen — would strengthen an already exceptional passing game led by future Hall of Fame quarterback Peyton Manning.

All of these leaks sound like Welker’s camp posturing for the Patriots. And I don’t think the Patriots are going to take the bait. Denver may as well go for it. Welker is a spring chicken compared to their QB.

  20. CKL says: Mar 13, 2013 3:52 PM

That’s one of just a few teams that I cannot root for him anymore if he goes there. He’ll also get zero credit for being a good player anymore. No one does when they join a team with Manning on it.

  22. fwippel says: Mar 13, 2013 3:55 PM

I can’t help but think this is a major mistake by the Patriots. They don’t make many, but Welker has been Brady’s favorite target for years.

I can see it now. Patriots vs. Broncos in playoffs, Welker scores the winning TD.

With Peyton Manning, at least you know you will have half of January off
The same amount of time the Pats got off last year but at least Denver was competitive against BALT and NE looked awful. Don’t worry about who will get the ball and all the touches. When Manning threw for 49 TD’s he had 3 receivers with 1000 yards and 10 TD’s. Welker will be a good fit and he will boost the numbers for Decker and Thomas. Finally please stop with the Manning choked last year. Does anyone with half a brain truly think he is the reason they lost that game. They won 11 games in a row for crying out loud.

  30. n2thaizzo says: Mar 13, 2013 3:58 PM

  33. vincentbojackson says: Mar 13, 2013 3:59 PM

if the Patriots wanted to keep him they could have. They could have franchised him or they could have paid him. So if he goes somewhere else it’s the Patriots that let it happen. I hope it was a good choice.

I do believe that Welker won’t be as good a fit in another less complicated offense and without Brady, who can throw the bullet short pass 3 feet off the ground. But he’s got as good a shot as any to be great with Manning as the QB. Good luck to him if he leaves. Everyone has a value. If Brady really restructured to help with Welker he’ll be really pissed like in 2006 when he had to play with Reche Caldwell.

  50. azarkhan says: Mar 13, 2013 4:07 PM

  51. charleythedinosaur says: Mar 13, 2013 4:09 PM

  52. metitometin says: Mar 13, 2013 4:10 PM

As a Pats fan, I’m outraged it has come to this. The Pats have the nerve to play hardball with everyone, even someone as invaluable as Wes. The Pats have the nerve to charge the highest ticket prices in the NFL, Brady signs a cap-friendly deal and then they not only go out and do nothing but let one of their best players go. Good luck finding someone else to have that chemistry with Brady. Brady may as well retire now because it’s all downhill now for the Pats.

  53. 1phd says: Mar 13, 2013 4:11 PM

  57. psousa1 says: Mar 13, 2013 4:13 PM

Welker 6 yard and fall down? Guess you don’t watch the games. Very good after the catch. Runs like a running back – sees a hole and goes.

I still think the Pats are loading up for Victor Cruz and leaving $ for Aquib Talib. They have not had a corner like that since Ty Law. If he didn’t pull his hamstring in the first quarter that could have been a different game. When he was in Boldin was targeted 3 times. Twice Talib batted down passes and one was incomplete.

Why do some people wet themselves over NFL free agency? It’s mostly hype, and I guess just something to do in an otherwise relatively boring sports month. OMG, we might get Wes Welker!! Super Bowl here we come!!! “We” lost Dannelle Ellerbee!! What is Oz thinking???? The Steelers let Mike Wallace walk!! The end is near! This isn’t like MLB where free agency really can make the difference between the World Series or a stay at home October. I actually had to turn off the NFL Network last night because those talking heads were losing their minds – which I guess is their job. I admit it’s fun, but as Butthead said, “like, settle down Beavis.”

Objectively, the Pats are doing the right thing. Wes is one of those players who’s league value may appear to be higher than his team value because of his skewed statistics within NE’s system. Paying any player more than that player’s value to the TEAM will have an impact on every other player’s situation; not just for the current year but for future years. Welker knows he belongs in NE and the Pats know he’s perfect for them as well. We essentially have two stubborn parties who need their heads knocked together if any deal is to get done between them. In the long run, the team has less to lose. NE will simply fill vacancies with competent personnel at less money and continue on their winning ways. Welker, on the other hand will be getting the short end of the stick whether he stays or goes. Welker is also a bad idea for Denver. Welker, although very durable, is 32 years old and will only be the #3 option, so his stats will likely drop off the bottom end of the chart. Realistically, his only chance at NFL immortality, if that is important to him, is to continue his 100-plus catches per season for NE at least three more years. That will not happen anywhere else. Also, Denver may have to cut Dumerville loose to make cap room to finance Wes. That would be a huge mistake. As Denver loses quality defensive personnel, so goes their chance to be successful. Last year the Broncos were 2-3 against any team with a winning record. They were successful because of defense and because they played most of their games against teams with a combined 44-78 record (or close to that). IMO, Manning appeared to falter in the playoffs primarily as a result of fatigue (both physical and mental) from a 16 game season. He will likely continue that trend due to age and the huge physical toll from his neck surgeries. The fact that he recovered to accomplish what he did this year is amazing, and a testament to his commitment. But I honestly don’t believe Denver will win more than 9 games next year IF they trend away from their focus on defense. Welker to Denver, IMO, is simply a bad idea for both parties.

    >>>

Way too much hot air in Seattle. They will crash and burn. Way too many egos brought in

    ______

Who are all the egos that Seahawks have brought in? We signed one player this year in Harvin. If you’re referring to Richard, all you probably know is what you saw on first take. Other than those two names who are the other big egos? Russell Wilson??? haha. I love all these people who haven’t paid any attention to the seahawks until now but think they know what’s going on. Carroll and schneider have built a very close team who compete w/ eachother and are confident on the field. The locker room and management is too strong to let egos plague this team.

I’m not saying the hawks are going to the Super Bowl next season but they are a very strong young football team w/ a crazy amount of upside. Gonna be a tough team to beat.

A match mad in Heaven…Welker never runs a pattern further than a 5 yard deep crossing pattern…and Manning can’t throw a ball further than 20 yards….IN HOT WEATHER

When its cold he has no feeling in his fingers due to his neck surgery. The Old Folks Home is in Mile High.

shutupbrees: “ACTUALLY MANNING PUT UP 7 POINTS, SINCE THEY RETURNED TWO KICKS FOR TDS.”

No, actually PM put up 21 minus the kickoff returns, math warrior. Here’s where I curse the public education system…

Are you stupid or something? Denver scored 35 points in that game, not 21. So if you take away the 2 KO returns, it’s 21 points. Manning had 3 TD passes. Watch the game if you are going to comment on it. Not only that, you can’t just take away 2 KO returns for TD’s. That took away 2 possessions that Denver would have had to score on offense.

Lol manning is a choker??? Ive seriously heard it all.

cold weather peyton does suck always has thats why we need to get a rb like steven jackson people dont like getting hit from a back like him in cold weather

Welker is an Oklahoma City guy. He got married last year. Maybe he just wants to end his career closer to home. Playing for Manning makes leaving Brady a little easier.

Well, if Wes is not happy with the pats anymore, then he can go. This annoying huffing and fuffing on his side does not fit the pats shut your trap culture. I love Wes but his whining and critical ball dropping is a bit much. His attitude is distracting. Brady will miss him and so will we, his fans. But as BB like to say, it is what it is.

peyton is good reg season and he cant handle playoff pressure as good as he does in reg season but he is still one of the best in the league and our d needs to step up to many big plays down field our special team is good offense is good need a back like steven jackson we choked in playoffs it was our year we fell short peyton needs a big back

So they want to let go of Dumervil to save money just to turn around and spend it on a reciever: the area they least need to upgrade. Sigh…

patriotenvy says: Welker is no Troy Brown.

No, Welker is much better than Brown. Brown caught 557 balls over his 13 year Patriot career. Welker has caught 672 in his six years with the Pats. Facts are stubborn things, aren’t they?

  96. annes22 says: Mar 13, 2013 4:57 PM

Good for Wes going to the Broncos.. The Patriots have messed him about long enough, so now Tommy can find someone else to get him out of a bind. I am surprised with the Patriots not re signing him, considering Mr Kraft said 2 days ago, Wes would be a Patriot for life, wrong.

  97. bronconation623 says: Mar 13, 2013 4:57 PM

we just got welker good i guess but we need defense

Oh you mean like all the Brady slurpers who claim that Welker is only a product of Brady and that he would suck anywhere else?

They usually say the system and not TB, but either way they are also wrong. I’ve never thought WW was a system player. He’s a player whose fantastic skills are used well in the system. A system player is one who is average and hidden by the system. He’ll be good in Den. He was good in Mia. He’s just good.

To the person who listed the other Colts players you do realize that even Freeney got disgusted with all the praise PM got. Anyone wonder if Wayne’s decision not to go with PM to Den had a little of the “let me prove I’m actually a good player on my own” in it? I sure wonder. And he was right, he was always great aside from PM.

Denver Bronco’s vs Seattle Seahawks at MetLife Stadium for Super Bowl 48?

  102. july57 says: Mar 13, 2013 5:30 PM

Welker won’t make any noise in Denver or anywhere else except NE. The only reason he has as many catches as he does is because he is a specialist, NE threw to him 10-11 times per game, Two, three yds at a time, never deep. Why wouldn’t he have 100+ catches every year. He will not get that type of focus in Denver
