For all those commenting on coach Schwartz, he was challenging that the runner was down and threw the flag before he scored. It should not have been interpreted that he was challenging a scoring play that gets reviewed automatically.

I still say the best way to fix this challenge mess is to go with the college system.

Why bother to have plays that are “automatically” reviewed? Just give coaches all the challenges they want until they miss two attempts. Isn’t that simpler and easier? Instead of having a coach wonder “do I challenge this or is it going upstairs” he can just challenge with the only fear being that if he loses he loses a timeout. Once he loses two challenges, he can’t challenge anymore. But if he’s right all the time, why penalize him for being right by limiting his opportunities? Do away with automatic replays.

So if a pass is blown dead as incomplete, and a defender scoops up the ball and jogs into the end zone with no one chasing him, and then replay shows that it was actually a catch and fumble, this is now a defensive touchdown? That’s a bad rule change.

This rule was advocated by John Mara – imagine that – John Mara advocates rules that are not well thought out and are not vetted with analysis and thinking…. guess his daddy’s money couldn’t undo the embarrassment he must be feeling about such a bad rule.

I like penalisation of HC who tries to challenge a play that is going to be reviewed anyway. A HC should know better, but the NFL needs to at least give HC a couple years to adjust

So, basically, a coach who throws the red challenge flag at a time when the review is otherwise automatic will be viewed as having thrown the red challenge flag under normal circumstances.

That’s actually not 100% accurate, at least not as I’ve seen it explained in other places.

If a coach throws a challenge flag in an automatic situation, the penalty is that he loses a timeout- whether he wins the challenge or not.

Ordinarily, a coach who wins a challenge does NOT lose a timeout.

The 15 yard penalty would be used as an alternate penalty if the coach is out of timeouts.

Why it took this long to change the “Tuck Rule” I will never know……..So many games have been ruined because of it.
