Desmond Bryant wants to move on from mug shot

DesmondBryant

Desmond Bryant knows everyone’s laughing at the picture.

But he’s not going to keep talking about the unfortunate photo that made him an internet sensation long before the Browns made him a rich man.

I’ve seen the picture and I’ve heard that it’s out, but I really don’t know to what extent,” Bryant said, via Mary Kay Cabot of the Cleveland Plain Dealer. “I’ve really already kind of addressed that whole situation. It’s an ongoing legal matter and I’m not supposed to talk too much about it.”

That’s fine, but it won’t go away, as he became the butt of jokes around the web for the eyes-half-open, tongue-half-out look on his face after he was arrested on criminal mischief charges.

The Browns obviously didn’t mind, as they gave him a five-year, $34 million deal on the first day of free agency.

“We looked at everything we could, we know people that know Desmond very well,” Browns CEO Joe Banner said. “Our new strength coach [Brad Roll] was with him in Oakland last year. So we evaluated the situation, we looked at his history and felt very comfortable that he fit the profile of what we’re looking for here.”

Bryant, who went to Harvard, was also arrested in 2010 for his role in a beating in a convenience store parking lot (link includes a more conventional mug shot) in Myrtle Beach, S.C.

“I obviously made a mistake,” he said Thursday of the most recent arrest. “I apologize for everything that happened, but I feel like I’ve learned from it and moved on. I think I’ve done enough over the years I’ve been in the league to exhibit that’s really not the kind of person I am. I think in time I’ll be able to show you guys and whoever else wants to know that’s really not indicative of me. It was an accident. I’ve moved beyond that and hopefully everybody else will be able to.”

That’s probably unlikely, but his behavior off the field (and sadly, his play on it) will allow people to make up their own mind what kind of person he is.

  4. hegedutj says: Mar 14, 2013 8:49 PM

This is exactly what Cleveland needs. Finally a little character on this damn team…

  5. jetsncoleslaw says: Mar 14, 2013 8:49 PM

He should petition the state of Ohio to insert that picture on his new driver’s license…

  6. noburghfan says: Mar 14, 2013 8:50 PM

DG , give the guy a break ! Let’s see your mugshot !

  7. laxcoach37 says: Mar 14, 2013 8:54 PM

    @theredbengal

You may be on to something here. The Browns have no logo on their Helmets. They should put that Photo on it!

  8. johnnyb1976 says: Mar 14, 2013 8:56 PM

That picture is forever, good luck trying to get everyone to forget about it.

  9. dropkickbanana says: Mar 14, 2013 8:57 PM

Yes, it’s an unflattering photo. It didn’t strike odd with one other person so far that he got into HARVARD??? This is the face of a Harvard student? Outstanding….

  10. billbrasky72 says: Mar 14, 2013 8:58 PM

Jasper Brinkley just signed with AZ

  11. raiderapologist says: Mar 14, 2013 9:01 PM

So the strength coach is Cleveland’s go-to guy for scouting? He should be a good signing for you guys. Versatile player, kinda nasty. I was hoping Oakland would pony up the cash to keep him.

  12. raidermark says: Mar 14, 2013 9:01 PM

What a waste of money! LOL The league has turned into a bunch of sheep that see a player have a decent year and back the money truck the next year. This guy DIgressed this past year. LOL

  13. minnesotablizzard says: Mar 14, 2013 9:09 PM

“Criminal Mischief” is usually a bogus charge drummed up by police that can’t book you for anything else but still want to ruin your day/night. In my eyes the mug shot is more of a troll move against the police because he knows he will win in court.

  14. Max says: Mar 14, 2013 9:09 PM

Man hopefully that shot is on the player profiles for the opening day program

I’ve decided. This one’s funnier than the Nick Nolte mugshot.

  18. uncletuna says: Mar 14, 2013 9:17 PM

That really is the best mugshot ever…

…he will never have any credibility while raising his offspring though…

  19. pacificnw7722 says: Mar 14, 2013 9:26 PM

Someone should make that into a FatHead and put it up in the locker room.

  20. berniesboys says: Mar 14, 2013 9:29 PM

Great…He’s been one of us for 24 hours and Mary Kay Cabot is already busting his balls about his mugshot. Way to ask the tough questions Mary Kay. Now how about some relevant ones.

  21. mypercyhurts2 says: Mar 14, 2013 9:41 PM

How did they get the bowling ball out of his throat?

  22. borophyll says: Mar 14, 2013 9:43 PM

I’ve long believed the Browns need more Harvard grads with criminal records.

  23. ballboy48 says: Mar 14, 2013 9:53 PM

Finally a regime that is willing to take a risk on a good player, that had a brush with the Law. Bryant is a beast at 6’6″, and has a high motor. I’m hoping that the Browns turn the corner, and are respectable again. Their fans deserve it.

  24. arrowdead says: Mar 14, 2013 9:56 PM

Sometimes u meet ppl and for whatever reason u simply determine u can’t trust them or that they are simply “off” and you would rather just move on,not explain and never deal with the again. DB and his pic is an example of such an occurrence. a 4th rnd pick from, say, Colorado St or Pitt or Hudson Valley Comm College is better than this less than full deck of cards known as DB.

  25. menofsteelx6 says: Mar 14, 2013 9:57 PM

    He represents the browns perfectly

  26. FoozieGrooler says: Mar 14, 2013 10:01 PM

  27. orlandodawg says: Mar 14, 2013 10:06 PM

Hell….. he looks like everyone else in Cleveland after a night out partying in the flats…..Welcome to Browns town dude!!!

  28. bensstinkyfingers says: Mar 14, 2013 10:08 PM

Big Des will fit right in with browns, the “D” is shaping up to be top 5 in the league. Sad thing is that mugshot still looks better than half the fans in the dawgpound by the 4th. qtr. of browns games.

  29. speedkills21 says: Mar 14, 2013 10:09 PM

Lol I just bet he wants to move away from it… I however do not and will continue to enjoy it for many weeks to come!!

  30. Giantspunk213 says: Mar 14, 2013 10:16 PM

  31. buckeye94 says: Mar 14, 2013 10:19 PM

  32. 209eaglesfan says: Mar 14, 2013 10:28 PM

Blame it on the bath salts..hes gonna be a solid player whom the Raiders would have kept in a different salary situation

  33. tucsonpackfan says: Mar 14, 2013 10:30 PM

He said he learned his leason. Next time he will smile for his mug shot.

  37. dawgswillhunt says: Mar 15, 2013 3:44 AM

The man has a degree in psychology from Harvard, but everyone wants to focus on a petty criminal offense.

Hate all you want, he’s got $15 million (guaranteed) reasons not to care what you think and the Browns got the best defensive tackle in FA.

  38. nananatman says: Mar 15, 2013 12:13 PM

    They never learn from it

  39. raidergreg2000 says: Mar 15, 2013 1:38 PM

The Browns will always just continue to stink! Stay classy Cleveland!
