Eagles “on the verge of a deal” for Connor Barwin

The Eagles continue to throws bodies at their defense, and they’ve found one who is a proven producer in a 3-4.

According to Jason LaCanfora of CBSSports.com, the Eagles are “on the verge of a deal” with Texans outside linebacker Connor Barwin.

If they get the Barwin of 2011 (11.5 sacks) instead of the 2012 version (3.0) it will be better for them.

But added to the mix with safeties Kenny Phillips and Patrick Chung, cornerbacks Cary Williams and Bradley Fletcher, defensive tackle Isaac Sopoaga and linebacker Jason Phillips, the Eagles are presiding over an extreme makeover.

UPDATE 5:49 p.m. ET: The Eagles announced that they’ve agreed to a six-year deal with Barwin.

If signed he would be an immediate contributor on the outside. Another solid move by the Eagles

    DREAM TEAM 2 BABY!!

In all seriousness, they are adding some nice pieces which should be an improvement, especially in the secondary. Not sure we will challenge for a playoff spot yet but atleast we should improve enough to not be a joke.

  7. friskyd13 says: Mar 14, 2013 5:08 PM

As a texans fan i am disappointed that we are dropping him he was quite a character and was a great producer… Good luck where ever he goes!

  8. justintuckrule says: Mar 14, 2013 5:09 PM

Gotta love the Dream Team!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! It’s their time of year. We all knew they couldn’t sit quietly on the sidelines during their free agency super bowl run. Next up…predictions of 12-4. They are so cute aren’t they? Like little puppies.

  10. gotampabay52 says: Mar 14, 2013 5:11 PM

Kelly + Vick = top five pick next year. Can’t for this to blow up again as high hopes in Philly will be short lived again

  11. raymondtx says: Mar 14, 2013 5:11 PM

Havent I heard this song and dance before out of philly?

  12. raymondtx says: Mar 14, 2013 5:13 PM

The Eagles are super bowl champs of the free agent signing period again. Congrats all in philly.

  13. seabreezes51 says: Mar 14, 2013 5:13 PM

Looking more and more like an OT in the draft.

  14. snowboardinganteater says: Mar 14, 2013 5:14 PM

I’m glad to see that Chip is trying to make solid moves in FA to improve the Eagles D. Anything is better then that stupid “Wide 9″ crap that we had last year.

  15. seabreezes51 says: Mar 14, 2013 5:14 PM

    Or Geno.

  16. regulator2 says: Mar 14, 2013 5:16 PM

Defense makeover now clear. How long it takes to get all these players on the same page as a unit is now the question.

  18. bdawks20 says: Mar 14, 2013 5:17 PM

I’m loving this. Throw a bunch of pieces together on defense, where most of our weak points are.

Our offense already has the pieces and with Jason Peters, Kelce, and Herremans healthy our line isn’t too bad. Hopefully we can draft Joeckel or Fisher.

Basically, the Eagles have the pieces to contend. It’s whether Vick can perform well or not that is going to decide the outcome of the season.

  19. attyken says: Mar 14, 2013 5:18 PM

Chip is really impressing me with these mid level signings. Add in our draft pics and we should have a solid foundation.

  20. razorbyrd says: Mar 14, 2013 5:20 PM

    switching from a 4-3 to a 3-4 takes a personnel overhaul… 8 free agents, 7 for the D, I like it!!!

  21. calhounlambeau says: Mar 14, 2013 5:21 PM

Dude was terrible last year, forget the lack of sacks, just awful. Dude is just a name. Great athlete though.

  22. stoolerz says: Mar 14, 2013 5:22 PM

The eagles are really a joke. Signing just a bucnh of practice squad stiffs

  23. bramirez071193 says: Mar 14, 2013 5:23 PM

As a texans fan who has seen him play for 4 years i will tell you this guy is an average starter at best. In 2011 he had 11 sacks but 4 came in one game against the jags and gabbert and i think the d had like 7 as a group. Hopefully im wrong but i doubt it

  24. nopderbeck says: Mar 14, 2013 5:24 PM

Did the Eagles and Redskins swap places somehow? Eagles are busy trying to buy their team (again).

  25. flavordave says: Mar 14, 2013 5:25 PM

on the road to victory, fight Eagles fight score a touchdown 123 hit em low hit em high and watch our Eagles fly fly eagles fly on the road to victory E-A-G-L-E-S EAGLES!!!!!!

  26. myeaglescantwin says: Mar 14, 2013 5:25 PM

so either Graham or Cole are out?
Does this cat play strictly one side, or can he move around and still get it done?

Big news in Philly,, but i have seen a FA run before.
i just hope the Brass did proper research on character.
but then again, i’ve also heard that before.

  27. db3300 says: Mar 14, 2013 5:26 PM

Before they start building that shelf for the SB trophy, they should remember that Vick is still the QB.

  28. eastofmissball says: Mar 14, 2013 5:32 PM

Solid LB… But even more, huge loss for Texans locker room. He may not be the best LB out there, and some think he is a clown. But in a long haul to the SB he brings some intangibles to the locker room and player moral that can’t be replaced. May not sound like big deal to some, but crucial from my view.

    Oh, when will they learn?
    ===========================
The situation is entirely different obviously. They arent tryin to win a championship this season. Theyre trying to rebuild, switch defenses which require some different personnel and create competition while adding much needed role players.

  30. kayakattack says: Mar 14, 2013 5:37 PM

So signing a DE means they are being malicious spenders? based on ONE bad offseason and a loudmouth qb? None of these signings scream malicious. These are all young, inexpensive additions … Grip, get one!

  31. therealtrenches says: Mar 14, 2013 5:39 PM

Hey KC fans: among other things, this extreme makeover is a huge testament to what an *extreme mess* your new head coach left here in Philly.

  32. sasquash20 says: Mar 14, 2013 5:44 PM

I would rather run a 3-4, but when personel is suited for a 4-3 you go with it. By switching it up you are forced to overpay an average DT, and a average OLB. You hope F.Cox can play DE. He looked great as a 4-3 DT last season. What about V.Curry, T.Cole, and B.Grahm? I’m willing to bet that all would be more productive this year further removed from the wide 9 and Washburn. By switching you create more holes. Lord knows we had enough holes in the secondary.

  33. bobonmycob says: Mar 14, 2013 5:46 PM

How can you tell who an eagles hater is? Easy! “you signed all the high priced free agents last year what an idiotic move”. Then “you are signing average practice squad players… what losers!”… So no matter what move they make you hate. It’s fine… It’s easy to hate such a popular football team (top 5 media market) that has never won a SB. That would make me a little mad too. But Eagles are popular not just in philly but everywhere (I see a lot of phillies and eagles gear out here in California). All I can say is hate on losers!

  34. bullsonparade2399 says: Mar 14, 2013 5:46 PM

If only Barwin would have signed the 5/25 mil extension we offered prior to the season started. Mercilus produced more and played half the time Barwin did.

  35. bobbyhoying says: Mar 14, 2013 5:47 PM

If everybody on the defense actually attempts to tackle the opponent holding the ball, we may see some progress over last season.

  36. eatitfanboy says: Mar 14, 2013 5:47 PM

If the Eagles signed an undrafted free agent punter from Hofstra, some clown would make the “dream team” joke on here.

Thing is, it wasn’t really funny when it was new. Now it’s just stupid.

  37. rodericksilva says: Mar 14, 2013 5:48 PM

    Haters…keeping it interesting.

Eagles are under the cap and there is a minimum. If they did nothing after a dismal season everyone would laugh. If they sign FAs after a dismal season everyone still laughs.

I like what I see. The fact that they had no OL last year due to a mess of injuries I think will make it easier to make a quick improvement over last year’s record.

    E A G L E S Eagles.

  38. FlyFromTheInside says: Mar 14, 2013 5:54 PM

It took him just long enough to reply with the rest of the Eagles fight song that he was probably looking it up online.

    I’m on to you, Dave.

  40. ryanrockzzz says: Mar 14, 2013 6:02 PM

It’s funny the eagles sign a bunch of young/role players and everyone jumps on them, but yesterday it was that they were not signing enough impact players.

  41. ninozlatino says: Mar 14, 2013 6:04 PM

go ahead haters keep hating. This isnt dream team 2.0. the guys that are question marks get one year deals. they are still in their prime. from winning organizations. Namdi was a bust. DRC only played when he wanted to. Vince Young and Ronnie Brown were huge mistakes. None of these players are big names or big contracts. solid contributors. Connors knows Demeco. Keep it up birds. at the very least we will have depth. I just hope Billy Davis brings them together.

  42. neva4get5 says: Mar 14, 2013 6:07 PM

As a true Eagles fan I really like what the Birds are doing with the new personnel. The only thing I truly regret is not getting another year out of DRC b/c I think he is truly gifted athletically and could have provided us with quality corner play!!!!

  43. raiderapologist says: Mar 14, 2013 6:07 PM

12M for Sopoaga, and now a 6 year deal for Barwin? Not trolling, Eagles fans, just asking: You really like those deals?

  44. flavordave says: Mar 14, 2013 6:15 PM

Haters speak from fear in the belly. It grows more each day Chip assembles the pieces. Behold the highest point per game team the league has ever feared to see. Shock the world is a coming.

  45. 4getu says: Mar 14, 2013 6:16 PM

Why is it so many d bag eagles haters take the time to write their meaningless hate comments. Makes you clowns look insecure with your own team. And stop pretending like you know what you’re talking about, over half of your comments don’t make since or are completely inaccurate.

    Who?

Another god-awful overpay this sub-par FA season.

  47. justintuckrule says: Mar 14, 2013 6:51 PM

Eagles fans are so cute aren’t they? They are like Chris Farley’s little imaginary furry naughty pet in Tommy Boy.

Every March, they sign their little Dream Team and boldly proclaim that this is their year. And every year Chris Farley strokes the pet until it becomes squished.

Thank you for making my day! Also, thank you for not spelling haters with a “z”. That’s just ghetto.

  48. boyshole25 says: Mar 14, 2013 7:25 PM

  49. 4getu says: Mar 14, 2013 7:25 PM

Pretty sure only one person is calling for an eagles Super Bowl. We’re rebuilding and as fans, all we want after a couple horrible years is improvement. And stop calling us cute, the feeling isn’t mutual h-o-m-o

This entire post makes me ill. To question my love for Broad and Pattison ave. To question my heart at the linc or the dirty 700 level I was proudly apart of. The tribute to Reggie White night where I stood in freezing cold rain and sleet. The games I snuck past security at the Vet to get into. The knockoff jerseys purchased at Forman Mills. The dirty fresh soft pretzels on market street. The tens of thousands of stray cats under the Vets cold concrete walls….I AM PHILLY. You sir are the fraud.

  52. macjacmccoy says: Mar 15, 2013 6:31 AM

Man people have horrible memories. THE DREAM TEAM SIGNINGS DIDNT HAPPEN LAST YEAR! They happened 2011 off-season Joe Banner’s last year with the team. He was trying to win a superbowl and go out with a bang. It didnt happen and he left. Last year the Eagles were extremely quiet in free agency. Except for retaining their own players and trading for Demeco Ryans the only acquisitions they made were 3rd string no names that they picked up to be training camp bodies with the possibility of having a special teams role.

Get your facts right. 1 year of crazy over spending by a guy on his franchise death bed does not a pattern make.

  53. oldbyrd says: Mar 15, 2013 8:19 AM

If you noticed the players they went for all have great attitudes. That in its self will win you 2 more games. Who knows, a good coach can get players to play over their heads. So lets see. I have a feeling The Eagles are going to draft Geno. Just a feeling. Remember he can run ( 4.5) thaT’S NOT TOO SHABBY. Good arm. Again great attitude. Eagles could surprise this year.

  54. 4getu says: Mar 15, 2013 10:38 AM

    @dallascowboysdishingthereal

Tell me again how many playoff games your joke of a team has won in the past decade. It must be heartbreaking for your team to have such high hopes every year, only to lose in embarrassing fashion every single year for such a long time. It’s not the early 90′s anymore. Enjoy watching your owner/GM continue to make a fool of himself and your organization clown.

  55. dallascowboysdishingthereal says: Mar 15, 2013 12:22 PM

    @4getu clulessmf,

That’s the point sheet4brainz. The Cowboys have lots of issues but are still a superior organization than the pathetic eagles. But you just stay focused on the cowboys problems. Next year the eagles will win it all.

  56. dallascowboysdishingthereal says: Mar 15, 2013 1:43 PM

    4getu
Really? How many super bowls have the eagles won EVER?? Just be quiet. Makin’ yourself look silly.

  57. flavordave says: Mar 15, 2013 2:57 PM

Those Dallas superbowls were 20 years ago. Since then how many playoffs games have you won? Or been in? Romo = no no.

  58. dallascowboysdishingthereal says: Mar 15, 2013 10:37 PM

    @flavordave

I would say Dallas has won in the playoffs in the last 20 years about as often as you have been with a female.

Go back to playin’ with your self and dreamin’ of that first eagle super bowl LOZER!

BTW the expression is Romo=oh no. Shows your ignorance.
