Falcons, Steven Jackson agree to terms

Seattle Seahawks v St. Louis Rams Getty Images

When the Falcons released running back Michael Turner, Steven Jackson was believed to be their choice to replace him.

It took a couple days and some rumored interest from the Packers, but the Falcons got their man. Adam Schefter of ESPN broke the news that Jackson and the Falcons have agreed to terms on a contract that will bring the NFL’s leading active rusher to Atlanta.

Jackson’s a clear upgrade on Turner and he’s been a strong receiver throughout his career, something that could add another wrinkle to a Falcons offense that looks even better than the one that helped them to the NFC Championship Game last year. With Tony Gonzalez coming back, the Falcons appear to be loading up for a run at the Super Bowl.

They’ll need to do some work on defense to get there, namely a pass rusher to replace the departed John Abraham and some secondary help whether or not they bring back Brent Grimes. Jackson’s a big get for them, though, and should be a very good fit in an offense that could have used his skills last season.

Atlanta needed a veteran back, if he can stay healthy he should do some great things this year, especially with rodgers in the backfield too.

Great pickup! Especially since it wasn’t the Packers that got him. Huge upgrade over broken burner Turner.

I am a Vikings fan but it looks like the early favorites this year are Broncos vs Falcons in the SB.

  7. watchdawg1103 says: Mar 14, 2013 4:34 PM

With that offense Jackson should have a pretty solid year. The Falcons will definitely run and use him better than the Packers probably would have. Atlanta should have an exciting offense to watch next year.

  8. bucrightoff says: Mar 14, 2013 4:36 PM

The Seahawks and 49ers are still by far the class of the NFC. The Falcants are just another mark for them.

Steven Jackson has been broken for years, and is basically Brandon Jacobs more athletic double. He doesn’t run with power any more, and lacks a hard nosed attitude. We’re talking get slammed by Aaron Curry, and whine about it for weeks. He’ll miss at least 4 to 6 games, and Falcons still need to draft RB.

  19. dukeeddy says: Mar 14, 2013 4:40 PM

  20. phil325 says: Mar 14, 2013 4:42 PM

  21. dwarftosser says: Mar 14, 2013 4:42 PM

I’m sure Atlanta paid him more, but he won’t be getting a ring there.

  22. winkeroni says: Mar 14, 2013 4:42 PM

Maybe Jackson is what the Falcons need. They really seem to play down to the competition. They were a few seconds from being 0-2 against the Panthers. He’s always played hard and has been on so many terrible teams. Not many football players play has hard as Steven Jackson does.

  23. lambeauleaper says: Mar 14, 2013 4:43 PM

He would have been a tremendous addition to the Packers. They would have had an answer to Bush in Detroit and Forte in Chicago. No one compares to Peterson in MN, so I’m not even going to go there…

I’m a bit upset that Jackson didn’t end up in GB, but it was all a leverage ploy for Jackson to get more money out of Atlanta. Business is business.

  24. deltaoracle says: Mar 14, 2013 4:44 PM

I won’t try to pretend otherwise, I was hoping he’d sign with the Packers. But Packer fans know by now that Thompson is always looking down the road and isn’t going to go all in for one or two seasons. He just wasn’t going to pay a lot for a 30 year-old RB. The off-season isn’t too exciting for GB fans. Waitin’ for the draft. Sigh.

  30. devouredbychaos says: Mar 14, 2013 4:45 PM

Solid signing for ATL if he can stay healthy, which has always been something of a problem for him.

  34. funshipm174 says: Mar 14, 2013 4:48 PM

I am really bummed about this too but Packer Fans (me included) do have to realize that northern Wisconsin isn’t an ideal location for many players weather wise or culturally. Now i clearly have no idea if the Falcons just beat the Packers offer or it was close enough that Jackson decided to go to Atlanta instead but in UFA the Packers have always behind the 8 ball sometimes by choice, sometimes based on other things.

Don’t worry Packer fans. That used car salesman you picked up late last year to fill the void has a lot of upside.

Just like every other RB you’ve ever had…

In any case, who needs a good running back when you have the awesome OL to run behind?

  47. gbpackfan1990 says: Mar 14, 2013 4:54 PM

Honestly I can’t say I’m disappointed. As much as a rb like this would help, our o line is the bigger issue. It doesn’t matter who is back there, they don’t have holes to run through. I just hope Ted takes a look at some of those FA lineman so we don’t have to rely entirely on the draft.

  48. malekmj says: Mar 14, 2013 4:55 PM

Really simple. Old Running back don’t want to play in FREEZING COLD Weather. He will run for 200 more yards and have less injuries in a dome. If you aren’t older than 25 and weren’t an athlete of any stature please don’t respond to this. You have NO idea what you are talking about it. TRUTH

Do you even watch football? Comparing S-Jax to Brandon Jacobs is utterly ridiculous.

This guy is a total stud and is finally joining a team where he doesn’t have to be the feature player on every play. This will help his longevity and keep him much healthier than he’s been in recent years.

They were in the freaking NFC championship game and ten yards from potentially winning it. Yeah that’s really a terrible year ! This is a great signing. Jackson averaged over 4 yards a carry behind one of the worst o lines in football and they had only amendola as any kind of threat in the passing game so teams could you know kind of key on Jackson. Don’t think he will have that problem in Atlanta

    lions, Matt Staffhurt
    Packers, Aaron Rodgers

If the bears, vikings and lions don’t do everything they can to sign Brett Favre right now it’s time to shut those franchises down.

much better fit for him than green bay. this could put atlanta back in the elite offense category.

  96. dirtybird70 says: Mar 14, 2013 6:10 PM

    3 yrs – 12M with 4M guaranteed! OUTSTANDING! :)

    He’s been Dimitroff’d

  97. threeptplay says: Mar 14, 2013 6:10 PM

For you Ted Thompson haters – you know, it is possible that the Packers and Falcons had similar offers, and Jackson simply preferred to play in Atlanta.

And I laugh at the comments of people calling Thompson and the Packers “cheap” when they are $20 million under the cap and will be able to extend the contracts of their core players instead of having to cut a bunch of guys like all these other teams have been doing.

  98. stevedurbano says: Mar 14, 2013 6:12 PM

Anyone who doubts Jackson’s ability and perseverance is an idiot. He has always run like it’s 4th and goal at the Super Bowl every single play. Best of luck, and I hope he retires as a Ram and goes into the HOF as a Ram.

    “SPEND SOME $ TED!!”

    ————————————————-

This just in: Aaron Rodgers, Clay Matthews and BJ Raji are going to cost some money here pretty soon.

  100. gbpack50 says: Mar 14, 2013 6:30 PM

A Packer fan all of my life but it’s getting harder and harder to watch all other teams sign players to fit their need. Not Green Bay!! Ted Thompson is ruining any chance that we may have in being an elite team. We need a running game but once again Thompson position is “pay nothing and sign the cheapest player available”. Remember Marshon Lynch. I believe the Seahawks grab him for a middle round pick when Green Bay had a chance to get him. THOMPSON HAS TO GO otherwise there will be no free agents visiting Green Bay. Steven Jackson was a perfect fit for the Pack but …..thanks Ted!

  101. sah0620 says: Mar 14, 2013 6:48 PM

LOL at the fools that thought Ted Thompson would spend big money on a 30+ running back (the absolute worst position to have someone over 30). Have you not paid attention the last 7 years he’s been GM? LOL at “Packers” fans that are upset once again at Ted for not throwing money at an aging free agent and instead opting to save money for re-signing their own players. Did you not see how great that free agent spending was for the Eagles a couple years ago? Super Bowls are won through the draft. You draft well, you resign your best players, and stay young. Ted knows exactly what he’s doing and I commend him for it.

  102. docboss says: Mar 14, 2013 6:57 PM

Hawks1124 is a total
Knucklehead. Ask the Seahawks and 49ers about SJ39.
Good luck SL39. 49ers and Seahawks are still the superior teams, but once the playoffs start, who knows? Classy guy.

  103. whatjusthapped says: Mar 14, 2013 7:20 PM

I love the haters jumping on Ted Thompson but the fact remains, he has never overpaid for a FA in his entire career. Not once, never.

He probably had his price and if Steven Jackson was willing, then maybe. Putting a lot of money into a running back in the Green Bay offense is not a good use of money, especially when Rodgers, Matthews and Raji all need to be re-signed. That is the basis of a draft and develop strategy.

  104. dolphins4 says: Mar 14, 2013 7:20 PM

The Falcons now have a home run hitter in the back field instead of a slow bowling ball that got barely 2 or 3 yards a carry.

  105. bigslizzle4twizzle says: Mar 14, 2013 7:26 PM

Saints fans talking about Atlanta’s defense if hilarious!! Your defense was Swiss cheese last year. Talk smack when your team gets over .500 WE DAT!!!

  106. cmonelisha says: Mar 14, 2013 7:35 PM

thats ridicilous for ppl to say sjax wont bring the falcons to another level..thats all they were missing was a monster RB now they got one for 3 years… seattle, sf, atl and denver are huge winners this year..

ravens and of course my giants..are not

  107. cmonelisha says: Mar 14, 2013 7:36 PM

i guess i can throw the lions in there to..assuming stafford can come up from pig status

  108. necr0philia says: Mar 14, 2013 7:41 PM

1st congrats to Atlanta and there fans!
2nd to the few crying Green bay fans suck it up. Your team has been a historical monument in the NFL. You guys are so spoiled that when a year or two goes by and things don’t go your way you start crying. Try being a Browns fan or Raiders or a Falcons fan post Matt Ryan era! Stop being spoiled little brats. ( Not all green bay fans I said to the ones crying) 3rd Thanks to the Rams fans showing class and wishing SJ the best! You guys are very classy. 4th PLEASE ATLANTA FIX YOUR DEFENSE OR THIS MEANS NOTHING AT ALL!!

  109. lionsplayoffs says: Mar 14, 2013 8:01 PM

Great landing spot for Jackson. Always liked him. This makes him still relevant in FF too.

  110. torontofalcon says: Mar 14, 2013 8:06 PM

As a Falcons fan I was worried about him going to Green Bay, they would have been unstoppable with him. But I’m happy he’s a Falcon. Seattle, San Fran, Atlanta, and Green Bay are the best teams in the NFC, this is not up for debate.

  111. johngaltwho says: Mar 14, 2013 8:41 PM

Well, I was hoping the Pack would land SJ. Seems like a standup guy, a solid running back with a great work ethic. Oh well, Im pretty sure that Ted Thompson knows more than I do about putting together a solid football team. The Packers have managed to stay more than competitive the last few years with a cadre of injuries that would decimate most teams. When you overpay for numerous free agents, you cant possibly build the depth needed to sustain in the face of unfortunate injuries to starters. Look at how many Packers backups are getting sucked up by other teams. Go Pack Go.

  112. shaggytoodle says: Mar 14, 2013 8:46 PM

I am a little bummed that Gb didn’t sign him.

He also is injury prone though, so I understand why TT didn’t want to overpay.

TT is about to unload some serious money to some cornerstones in GB.

  113. skitd says: Mar 14, 2013 8:58 PM

From fans that obviously don’t watch much football to sports reporters that don’t have a clue, I still can’t figure out the comments about SJax always being hurt or injury prone. In his nine years in the league out of 144 games he has missed 13 games. The man is a true warrior.

  114. noring4youstill says: Mar 14, 2013 10:04 PM

    Falcants. Won’t matter.

  115. txnative61 says: Mar 15, 2013 2:08 AM

Good pick up for Falcons, but it was the defense that gave up record comebacks to the Seahawks and 49er’s in the playoffs when they woke up in Eastern time. Better play for home field again because they do NOT want to play in Seattle or Sfran without some big D.

  116. starderup says: Mar 15, 2013 7:21 AM

All we needed last year was 10 yards, and we’d have been in the Super Bowl, and this guy might be what puts us over the top.
    Great move.
Yesterday on 790 The Zone, everyone was complaining about the Falcons being quiet in FA. I guess they forgot we have a GM that literally built the dynasty in New England.
    Thomas Dimetroff is the MAN!

  117. starderup says: Mar 15, 2013 7:34 AM

I just have to laugh at the who dat bagheads. They still think they have a shot. Maybe if they can keep from bragging about their cheating this time.
