Jones is simply “OK”. Seattle’s problems last year, especially in the postseason related to little pressure on the QB – even though our real DE’s recorded around 10+ sacks.

The lack of production was from Jones and company – so I wouldn’t get too exited Lions fans.

Its really cool that Mack Strong posted an analysis for you guys about Jason Jones. I’m sure most of you know who he is but for those who don’t; Mr. Strong was a fan favorite in Seattle. Starting fullback for (i wanna say 13 seasons circa) the hawks. He was blocking for Sean Alexander during his 1800 yard 28 td season. Absolute stud & retired while still playing at a very high level. His comments come with a high level of credibility. Very cool. Personally i hope Jason Jones finds his groove with the Lions. I would love to see Detroit knock the cheese out of the north & become a consistent contender in that division. Those fans have suffered long enough much like us hawk fans. Although during Strong’s career during the Holmgren era we owned the west the rest of the franchise history has been filled with mediocrity or worse. Go Hawks!

He’s playing DE and who knows he might get a chance at DT, if they decide to mix up the rotation. This guy is gonna shine on run Defense, and is from Southfield so you know he’s pumped to play with the coach who drafted him and the team which he grew up watching. He can do all the techniques, and is very versatile playing all the the positions.

Cliff Avril is a one trick pony who was selfish in a team sport goodbye siiiir!

yeah, Jones got a shot at full-time DE with the Titans and was miserable at it…had his best success as a pass-rushing DT/3rd down DT and is a situational player at best…not a full-time DT due to odd build (tall, lanky) but not enough outside speed to succeed consistently at DE…

an OK rotational guy; calling him a “steal” at $3m/yr demonstrates a lack of understanding…

Hey trippy, for the price we got Jones form…it’s a win win..Also the guys is like 6-6 260 so he’ll play end on 1st and 2nd downs and the move inside on 3rd. With jones in the mix and the lions drafting a DE potentially with the 5th pick (hopefully Ansah) it wont be very long when Lions fans start saying Cliff who?

Just let Lions know what their getting. Jason Jones can create some pressure inside at times with his variety of moves but his spin move was blocked all of last season. Clem & Irvin would beat their guy but the QB always had a clean pocket because of our relatively light guy playing DT and we suffered horrible on 3rd downs because of it. You have two excellent interior lineman in Suh & Fairley who could be best inside pair in NFL. All I say is I hated seeing Mebane get subbed out every 2nd or 3rd down and that sounds like Jones role again for a new team. Call me crazy but I think he would do just fine as a starting DE.

I loved Avril but he was a bit overrated. Glad to see Lions starting to patch up some holes in their team. Quinn is the best signing they could of made. What I heard about Houston fans is that they loved Quinn and felt he was extremely important to their defense. I think I will feel like a Texans fan who lost Quinn if we lose Delmas.

He essentially replaces Sammie Hill who signed with the Titans in the defensive line rotation and is not a starting DE. Anyone expecting more than that out of him will be sorely disappointed.

Not great, but slightly above average interior player last year and his injury hurt the Seahawks interior pass rush. Don’t know how he’ll do at end, but a decent player and at the least won’t be a liability. Good luck to him.

They don’t even know how good he is…he’ll be backing up Stafford, lead blocking for Bush, and doing post game handoffs for coach…championship

The goal is to rotate players in and out on the line to keep them fresh. He has great value as a backup because he is versatile enough to rotate in at both DE and DT.

If what i hear is true then no it’s not a steal. This guy is a pass rushing DT THATS IT. Hes not a pass rushing DE let alone a run stopping one. Big mistake if lions play him at DE.

Jones is a poor excuse for a starting DE. He was effective rushing inside on passing downs when healthy, but that was just about never. I’m surprised anyone was willing to give him a 3 year deal with his chronic knee issues. I don’t see how getting an injury-riddled player who can’t rush the passer from the 4-3 DE spot is a “steal”. A 4th round rookie could accomplish the same thing at a quarter the cost.

I don’t know about this being a “steal” or comparing him to Avril because if you’re going to compare his contract you have to compare his production. Avril had as many sacks last year (9.5) as Jones has had the past 3 seasons combined. Avril has 39.5 career sacks to Jones’ 18.5, despite the same number of years in the league (somewhat different roles I will give you). Avril is signed at 2 years, $15m in Seattle; Jones has 3 years, $9.5m here. Based on last year’s stats you’re paying $789k/sack for Avril and $1.06m/sack for Jones (assuming the average $/yr in each deal). Also, Jones has far fewer forced fumbles in his career (7 to Avril’s 16). So, based on production, I don’t view necessarily view this as a steal.

He’s a local guy and can play both inside and outside on the D line. Versatility is a nice asset and it looks like we got ourselves a deal.
