Matt Cassel makes quick move to Vikings

Kansas City Chiefs v New Orleans Saints Getty Images

The Vikings knew they needed a better second option at quarterback, so they didn’t want to wait.

According to FOX Sports’ Jay Glazer, the Vikings have apparently secured a deal with former Chiefs starter Matt Cassel.

The pace of the move underlines just how seriously they wanted someone better than Joe Webb behind Christian Ponder, and how much competition there was for Cassel.

After the beating he took in Kansas City, he’s also not the kind of guy who would be bucking for the starting job, old enough to know his role behind Ponder and not create pressure.

I don’t see a QB controversy brewing in M for at least another 15 minutes.

Sorry Packer fans, you knew the Ponder era was too good to last forever.

Great Pick Up! Now hold on to Joe Webb and make him a WR to only play if needed. he has speed and can shake things up!

Cassel is an ok QB and is way better then Joe Webb as a QB!

  18. bigfanhere says: Mar 14, 2013 3:46 PM

Great addition. Vikings vowed to ensure their backup knew he was truly a backup. Cassel knows his role and is a massive improvement over Webb — who can now be cut.

I think Viking fans will one day look back at this signing as the beginning of the Matt Cassel era in MN.

Sorta like they look back at the beginning of the Donovan McNabb era.

  23. purplekoolaid1 says: Mar 14, 2013 3:50 PM

  35. Rick Spielman is a Magician says: Mar 14, 2013 3:56 PM

How can anyone criticize this mov? Cassel seems like an ideal backup QB. He’s shown that he is a capable QB in spots but he’s also shown that he isn’t the kind of guy you would want to be your starter. He’s good enough to provide some competition for Ponder but not good enough that there will be a QB controversy. He’s a veteran who has started a lot of games and can help Ponder in his development. Great move by the Vikings.

  36. arrowdead says: Mar 14, 2013 3:57 PM

good luck Matt thanks for trying in KC; u give me headache but so did 75% of the team including front office…..BUT WHY would u sign with MIN? MINs WRs make KC look like 80’s 9ers….Did his agent press him? Does he feel desperate AKA no confidence in himself? Sure chance to start but pretty much n0 chance for real success….can think of 10 QB-hungry teams with better WR core…..I guess as long as he knows how to hand the ball off….hey at least MIN has cool uniforms!

  37. fargovikesfan says: Mar 14, 2013 3:58 PM

I’ve watched many of their games, what do you mean by tape? Don’t act like you work for an NFL team, you aren’t watching tape.

And from what I’ve seen, he is a very mediocre QB with average arm strength. Couple that with many games under 200 and 100 yards last season with a RB in the backfield that nearly broke an all-time rushing record. What are you seeing different on your “tape”?

  42. wludford says: Mar 14, 2013 4:03 PM

Good pick-up. Needed to be done. Now move Webb back to WR and decide to keep him or not based on how well he does there in the off-season.

  47. slickster35 says: Mar 14, 2013 4:07 PM

Matt Cassel has never won a QB competition in his life. It was all handed to him in KC.

If he ends up being their starter, they’ll never sniff a playoff game again.

Come back after a few games and tell me different. This guy doesn’t have the composure to play QB.

Whatever they pay him will be like him stealing. Worst QB under pressure I’ve ever seen in my 50 years on earth.

  56. purplehaze12 says: Mar 14, 2013 4:18 PM

  59. mackcarrington says: Mar 14, 2013 4:19 PM

WOW ! Never thought that Cassell would find a new team before Fitzpatrick. I wonder if Fitzpatrick has the “J.P. Losman disease” and now only thinks of himself as a starter making a certain amount of money. If so, then he will be out of the league in no time.

  60. ad2k says: Mar 14, 2013 4:19 PM

    @purplekoolaid1

I saw a run first team who made the playoffs on that philosophy. They didn’t ask for Ponder to throw for 300 a game because they didn’t need him to. Would it have been nice? Of course but Ponder did what he needed to get them to the playoffs. Sure he had bad games but he also had great games. Week 17 was probably his most efficient game in his career. You ever notice that when Ponder was throwing for tons of yards his team was down big (Ind, Was)? This team is more interested in winning games than convincing everyone Ponder is a great QB. Ponder is fine and will continue to improve. Jesus, I swear everyone’s favorite Vikings is always the backup QB.

  61. hawks1124 says: Mar 14, 2013 4:22 PM

I think at this point Cassel might be gun shy taking hit after hit, but i guess handing AP the ball might solve that. I’d be suprised Vikings don’t take a chance on Matt Hasslebeck if he’s cut by the Titans.

  62. blammy28 says: Mar 14, 2013 4:25 PM

For those of you who are saying Cassell is going to compete or start y’all are idiots and obviously don’t pay attention to the NFL. Cassell will ONLY start if Ponder gets hurt. Ponder is the starter and Cassell 100% backup.

Or….apparently you don’t watch much of his tape or are blinded by purple shades.

9 games less than 200 yards passing and 2 less than 100. Misses easy 3 yard passes at times. Only looks at one read most of the time. That is what I see from him so far. I willadmit he came through with 2 big throws against the Packers in week 17 when it counted. So, there is hope from him. However, there is nothing from his play by real time or tape that shows he is a capable consistent starter in this league yet.

So, we’re not at a point where we’re looking for a quarterback to come in and move Christian at all. We expect him just to keep getting better. There is no way this will back-fire for the Vikings. Most fans don’t believe Ponder was the answer and the worst thing that can happen here is he FORCES Ponder to play at a higher level. If Ponder does, great, kudos to him for stepping up. Additionally, if there is a serviceable backup, maybe that takes some of the pressure off Ponder.

I don’t know about the rest of you, but if M B-T and Joe Webb were my back-ups, I’d have felt the weight of the world too.
