Getty ImagesDerek Anderson hasn’t had much to laugh about lately.
But he has extended his NFL for another year. Assuming he makes the team.
Per the Associated Press, Anderson signed a one-year deal on Wednesday.
“I’m excited to come back be a part of such a great locker room,” Anderson said. “It’s a team that I feel is on the rise. We have some work to do but we feel like we ended on a high note last season.“
An unexpected star in 2007 for the Browns, Anderson has been a journeyman since then.
Anderson and Jimmy Clausen serve as the backups to Cam Newton. At some point, they should consider adding a more mobile understudy, who would both be able to run the base offense if Newton gets hurt and to serve as the scout-team quarterback when preparing for the growing number of teams with mobile quarterbacks.

Best news I’ve heard all day
Okay Browns fans, you can come back in off the ledge now.
I didn’t even know this guy was still in football. Amazing that one decent year can buy you so many chances as a backup.
He puts his heart and soul into this game… it’s not funny
He isnt getting multiple chances, this will be the third year on the team for him, he can clearly play as he has shown when he has to come in for a few snaps and hes a better backup then what i’d say 85-90% of the teams in this league have.
He helps cam with reading defenses and doesnt complain or make disruptions. Ill take him.
Talk about milking that ONE good year. How is this guy even still in the league? No matter. Kudos to him for collecting a check from yet another team for yet another year and doing absolutely nothing.
I still laugh and point to Anderson as a case study when teams get all excited about someone after one good year or a few good games. That second year is always the true test, after defenses have figured the QB and system out. Anderson and his ONE good year with the Browns is proof.
good point, m1000be. Also, the reverse is true as well. So many teams, and fans, seem to sour on a player after one bad season.
Glad the Panthers resigned him. Feels good having one of the top 5 backups in the league.
Browns fans may be down on DA, but Panthers fans know he’s a excellent back up, and are glad he’s back. Besides can you really judge a player by how well he did during his tenure in Cleveland?
I think they should draft Logan Thomas out of VT if he is available in the 5th or 6th round. He is basically a raw clone of Cam.
Anderson knows their offense well and has looked very good in limited opportunities. A solid backup QB that is a Newton injury away from showing what he can do.
At some point, they should consider adding a more mobile understudy
