Just before the start of free agency, the Chiefs were thought to be out of the running for cornerback Sean Smith.

Wes Welker’s arrival in the AFC West may have led to a change of opinion. Adam Schefter of ESPN reports that Smith has agreed to terms on a three-year deal with the Chiefs, who now have Smith, Brandon Flowers and Dunta Robinson to use at corner against the Welker/Demaryius Thomas/Eric Decker trio that they’ll face twice in the regular season.

It’s a quick and loud end to what had been a much quieter than expected entry into free agency for Smith. Thought to be one of the names that would generate the most interest, there wasn’t much activity involving Smith. A crowded cornerback market may have had something to do with it and a look at the numbers for his deal will provide the answer.

The Chiefs add Smith to a defense that already includes the other corners and Pro Bowlers Eric Berry, Justin Houston and Tamba Hali. With upgrades at quarterback and elsewhere on the offense, the Chiefs should win more than two games come next season.
