Former first-rounder visits the Panthers

When you have little to no salary cap room, you have to be creative. And desperate.

So the Panthers brought former first-round pick Chris Williams for a visit Friday, according to Howard Balzer of the Sports Xchange.

A former first-round pick, Williams finished this season with the Rams after the Bears released him in October.

The 14th overall pick in 2008, Williams lost his left tackle job to J’Marcus Webb (who since lost his to free agent pickup Jermon Bushrod).

The Panthers need line depth (and maybe some new starters on the right side of their line), but it’s unclear if Williams is an upgrade, as he was unable to crack the lineup of some shaky lines this year.

    If you cannot make it with the Rams as a OT, you are DONE. Wow. Maybe the Panthers should call Alex Barron or Jason Smith. (ever wonder why the Rams suck?)

    This guy is awful. Just awful. And as a bears fan, I’ve seen some bad linemen. Pray he doesn’t have to start, otherwise make sure you have a rosary for Cam Newton

    There is literally nothing helping cam in carolina other than greg olsen. Steve smith is old and was shutdown all year, and when your QB is your leading rusher for a long period of time, when theres over 60 million dedicated to running backs, you got more than a few problems.

    Speaking of Carolina. I haven’t heard their name in FA. Oh that’s right – they are stacked, why do they need to do anything?

    Steve Smith was shutdown all year? I think you may be thinking of the other Steve Smith.

    Charlotte sports are horrible!! Panthers are the poster child for medocrity!! Bobcats worst in the league, charlotte 49ers NIT bound–i can take it!! how are you going to lock up all this money on guys who got great records like 4-12, 6-10 and 7-9!!!

    New GM is gonna have a hard time the first year or so fixing the salary cap mess we have. Then we can add FA when we have the space.\
