Jennings insists that he’s not old

Jennings Getty Images

As humans go, new Viking receiver Greg Jennings is young.  As dogs go, he’s ancient.  As NFL players go, he’s somewhere in between.

Either way, Jennings is definitely sensitive about the fact that he’s pushing 30.

I’m not old,” Jennings said during his introductory press conference, via NFL.com.  “I’m 29.  I’m not old.  Let me throw that out there.  I am 29-years-old, I will not be 30 until well after the league year starts.”

Regardless, he’ll be 30 on September 21 — early in the 2013 season.  But he nevertheless scored a healthy contract from the Vikings despite his age and the fact that he didn’t have a very good contract year.

Regardless of how his career goes from this point forward, Jennings has squandered seven years of goodwill in Green Bay.  He chose between being reviled like Brett Favre or worshiped like Donald Driver, who soon will have his own street.Instead, the only thing Jennings will have in Green Bay is his own cheer.  Second word:  you.

I honestly thought he was older than 29, i was guessing like 32

  2. tokyosandblaster says: Mar 15, 2013 10:27 PM

Honestly, I don’t care. He didn’t go there to screw Green Bay. He went there because the vikings were foolish enough to pay him that much money, and he was foolish enough to think that he’ll catch any passes longer than 3 yards downfield.

  3. Sackville Rc says: Mar 15, 2013 10:27 PM

Yeah, he is too old to play WR, just like Russell Wilson is too short to play QB. It is time to start judging players by what they do on the field, and not by stupid sterotypes.

  4. shaggytoodle says: Mar 15, 2013 10:27 PM

Yeah most people get wiser, when they get older.

That said I will appreciate him and what he did in GB, I just won’t like him all the time.

  5. tonymission says: Mar 15, 2013 10:27 PM

I don’t say this often, but you’re absolutely right, Florio. Would have wished him the best anywhere else (besides Chicago). He can go pound sand now. What a phony.

Going straight from the Packers to the Vikings. Not a year removed from the team like Favre, but straight from one team to the other.

I wonder how my fellow hypocritical Packer fans will react to this one.

BOOM! Ignorant fans of other teams will reprimand the Packers fans for turning on Jennings. But those people don’t understand the level of hate and disdain Packers fans have for the Vikings. Sure, we hate the Bears too. But that organization is at least worth respecting. The Vikings, on the other hand, are a pathetic joke. And any ex-Packer that goes there becomes the same thing — a pathetic joke.

Also, Packers fans didn’t turn on Greg — Greg turned on the Packers. It was clear from his comments this year that he got butthurt about something, and that outburst by his sister on Twitter was just a glimpse into what’s said behind closed doors in the Jennings’ household.

Good riddance scumbag. Irrelevant and forgotten…and cut in 2-3 years. No one knew who Greg Jennings was when the Packers drafted him, and he had the good fortunate of having hall of fame quarterbacks throw him the ball since the day he entered the league. Have fun getting over- and under-thrown by Ponder.

  11. binkystevens says: Mar 15, 2013 10:36 PM

I know he has a family to take care of, but he just ruined his reputation as a player and a man. Vikings are classless losers – where winners go to die. Good luck woth not winning anymore playoff games.

    With love, Binky.

Florio – imagine you’re told you may not be around much longer at your place of employment. It’s something many of us have dealt with at one time or another. Usually people are happy for us when we find a new job and begin a new journey. But for some reason, any former Packer who joins the Vikings (or any former teammate who joins a rival team) is ridiculed and looked down upon. He stated himself that he was looking for a change knowing the implications of the 2012 season. Why add to the bitterness and stupidity from some Packers fans?

  14. GenXJay says: Mar 15, 2013 10:40 PM

It’s the price of the Cheesy playbook that Spielman got. Age of the player is a non-factor.
Also, on Gregs side of the coin, ShAaron had new Corvettes.
But, they’re just Cameros that won’t produce another victory lap, that is.

  15. preakin says: Mar 15, 2013 10:43 PM

All I have to say is prove it. Bucs signed Vincent Jackson last year to 5 yr 55 mil, and he led the league in yards per reception, and had over 1300 yards recieving from a bad qb you all say. Wallace is 30 and got 60 mil over 5 years. If I can pick Wallace, jennings or jackson, Ill take Jackson, he will and has earned his money.

  16. ningenito78 says: Mar 15, 2013 10:44 PM

  18. wiskybadger says: Mar 15, 2013 10:44 PM

I knew he would be gone after this past season, I just didn’t think it would be to a NFC North team. He clearly wants to be the star and the attention that brings but with the receiving corp in GB they proved they could go on without him and his price. Best of luck with a mediocre at best QB and at glad you finally got your dome. Can’t wait to hear about your sister’s tweets with Ponder or Cassel throwing the ball to you.

  22. leroysbutler says: Mar 15, 2013 10:51 PM

Greg Jennings is NOT a scumbag. He’s a class act and a fine football player.

Most Packer fans realize his contributions to the team and the community and are grateful.

That said we really can’t wish him the best of luck.
At least not until he retires.

  23. purpleguy says: Mar 15, 2013 10:53 PM

Packer fans are as predictable as constipation after an evening of cheese curds and beer. The Pack signs him and TT is a genious and Jennings is a class act. The Vikes or anyone else signs him and he’s an over-valued scumbag. News flash: the world doesn’t revolve around Green Bay.

  24. bartlettruss says: Mar 15, 2013 10:53 PM

I respect the Packers, but not so much some of their fans. You guys cut people and then do character assassinations on them just because they dare want another job. I realize that the Packers are all you have, but shut up…

  25. gtodriver says: Mar 15, 2013 10:57 PM

How was Jennings going to be “worshipped” in green bay when their so called fans were already complaining and whining before last season ended?

Packer fans are some of the worst fans in the NFL.

For some reason they seem to think they are God’s gift to the world. I had the misfortune of living over there for 23 years. I used to cheer for the packers (when they weren’t playing the Vikings). But after living there and having to put up with their fans, I no longer can do that.

  26. 4thqtrsaint says: Mar 15, 2013 10:59 PM

I’m a Packer fan and I agree with most of the Viking fans. Why rip this guy? Just be happy TT didn’t overpay. To me this is an over priced reach based on what Welker got, but they got rid of a headache, signed a good player, and got some draft picks. Actually scares me that the GM actually made some legit moves. That being said, I will resume my general disdain for all things Minnesota

  33. noteugene says: Mar 15, 2013 11:11 PM

As a Packer fan, Jennings was the leader of the receiving corps. He will be a high character addition to the Vikings. That said I never felt GB had a chance to sign him. There was a much stronger need from the Vikings. Also, with the addition of Jennings the Vikings are much better off than having the headache of Harvin around. Don’t have the same ansgst as when Favre joined the Vikings.

  34. bla bla bla says: Mar 15, 2013 11:18 PM

Apparently some of you didn’t read the part where the Packers offered him $10m per year and he turned up his nose at it and said he wanted $12m per year. Not a wise move.

Note to players: Don’t try to play “chicken” with Ted Thompson. He’s tougher than you are.

  35. ligat52 says: Mar 15, 2013 11:19 PM

I knew Jennings was probably going to be gone at the end of last season and I figured the Vikings would go after him. While I wish he had stayed or gone somewhere outside the division, I have no hard feelings. He was a free agent and he did what he had to do. It’s not even close to the same thing that went on with Favre. Besides, Ponder can’t throw more than 10 yards so Jennings won’t be much of a threat.

  36. calebo94 says: Mar 15, 2013 11:22 PM

  37. preakin says: Mar 15, 2013 11:22 PM

Vikings vs Packers battle, who really cares, neither is a threat to scare someone in the NFC. Packers have no defense, Vikings have, well not much besides AP. Bears probably strength of the division. So packer and viking fan, NOBODY CARES.

Seriously, Packer fans calm down. I have been a Viking fan my entire life and as much as Jennings has burned the Vikings, I have always respected the man. Besides he will forever be engrained in Packer lore by catching Favres whatever record breaking touchdown against the purple. Greg Jennings has been nothing but an outstanding memeber of a good organization. He does not cause problems, get arrested or is ever disrespectful. He felt he needed to move on. Get over it just because someone leaves a team its not the end of the world.

  42. vincelombardisghost says: Mar 15, 2013 11:32 PM

Unless the Vikes get another serious receiver threat, Jennings will see a lot of double teams. That alone will keep his catches down. Time will tell if he has the same sort of success in ’08, ’09 & ’10 that he had with the Packers. He’s missed too many games the last two years due to injury. Perhaps he’ll rebound, but Ponder can’t replicate Rodgers’ playmaking ability. I predict a decent, but far less than Pro Bowl year for Jennings.

You can’t blame him for wanting to come to MN. Now he’s playing indoors like he wanted. Also, he got himself a decent paycheck, and he’s going to be playing with the best RB in the league, and possibly of all time. Reggie Bush said playing with Megatron is a RB’s dream, well playing with AP is a WR’s dream. AP demands 8+ guys in the box or he will torch you. Now you put that many in the box and now the Vikings have a good WR, who can make you pay. Jennings isn’t a 4.3 guy, but he runs such crisp routes, that he will get open.

Ponders “noodle” arm or not, Jennings will have good seasons here. Sure, he won’t put up 100 and 1300 yards, but he’s still going to have good seasons. Remember, MN is a run first team. Ball control and good defense.

Draft time, they only need to draft a good WR, and after that, maybe OL for depth, and the rest can be all defense. Spielman has had some good drafts as of late. Spend a 1st rounder on WR, and all of the other picks on D! They are quietly building a good team.

  50. purpblooded says: Mar 15, 2013 11:37 PM

  56. greenandgoldgirl says: Mar 15, 2013 11:43 PM

I wish Greg Jennings the best and thank him for his contribution to the Packers during his years there. This is probably a better move for the Packers than it is for the Vikings. Jennings will contribute but I’d be more concerned about his health than his age. He has become more injury prone over the past two years and I don’t see that changing.

For the Packers, this gives them the opportunity to develop Randall Cobb who is a stud receiver and who now has the chance to step forward. Cobb has so much up side and keeping Jennings would have stunted that growth. When you look at it objectively, Jennings vs. Cobb, I think the Packers got the best out of this deal. Cobb is so much more versatile. Its a win situation for the Packers. They didn’t over spent on a guy who obviously didn’t want to be there any more and they can continue to develop their young receivers. Yep, win-win for the Packers.

  57. threeptplay says: Mar 15, 2013 11:44 PM

Jennings reacted the way a lot of athletes do when another player threatens them – kinda bitter and “insulted”. The Packers offense operated just fine with the likes of James Jones and Randall Cobb in there while Jennings was hurt, and that bothered him. He wants to be “the man” and garner attention, and will sacrifice team success for it. There’s nothing necessarily wrong with it, and he’s not the only one doing it. But at the same token pro athletes have a hard time being told by a coach or GM that they can go a different direction and still survive. Ask Brett Favre.

Jennings got his wish…he got paid, and is now “the man” for a team with a crappy WR corps. And he has sacrificed playing for a better team and playing for one of the best QB in the league to do it. Its the price he’s knowingly paid looking for attention and to be “the man”, and thus in a couple or 3 years when the Vikings pass offense flounders because of their mediocre QB, Jennings will be jettisoned just like the many pro athletes in their mid-30′s, and then be left with really nowhere to go.

  62. thejuddstir says: Mar 15, 2013 11:49 PM

Jordy Nelson hasn’t been a pillar of health for the packers and one good year doesn’t guarantee that James Jones does not become “hands of stone” again and they still don’t have anything that resembles a running game. The koolaid drinking fans who think TT is god don’t realize that they could’ve had SJax for a paltry 4m per year….they must not have offered SJax a street with his name on it and that’s why he signed with Atlanta.

Rodgers play in the last two playoff games were mediocre, period! Is he better than Ponder? I dont even need to answer that. Doesnt mean he cant be a huge help for the VIkings, unlike ignorant Packer fans who are already burning his jerseys http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4RznYnNjgHk&feature=player_embedded, I wish Jennings nothing but the best.. unless he is playing the Packers of course. Blah blah Ponder. Blah blah 5 yards. Everyone gets that Ponder isn’t even close to Rodgers level of QB play, not many are. Why are half these comments referencing Ponder’s arm strength? His arm strength is fine, he hasn’t had 3 years to ride Favre’s jock, he’s beginning his 2nd full season as starting QB and finally some additional weapons besides Adrian are being placed around him. Uneducated haters be hating. Jennings is classy, and will be a welcomed addition to the Vikings and the community. Let’s play!

To the people out there railing on packers fans for telling Jennings off – you are speaking from ignorance. Packers fans know that Jennings has been a diva since the Super Bowl victory. His “injuries” the past two seasons and his (not his family’s, his) deconstructive comments about his pending departure in the middle of the season (not offseason) notwithstanding, the Packers wanted him back! They offered him top dollar in the middle of the season ($10M per for 3 years).

For him to spurn that offer, get into FA and not find any suitors was HILARIOUS. Then he came crawling back to the Packers who allegedly still offered to sign him. Why? Because they are a heartless organization? No, because they valued his contributions and knew they still a needed a lead dog. But then he played that interest off on the Vikings to get a somewhat-face-saving offer.

I am sorry, but all that has transpired with this guy since the Super Bowl let him show his true colors to Packers fans. I almost forgot his 4 huge drops in the last two playoff losses (3 of which are game-altering TDs).

I am sorry, the guy can say “it’s a business” and “I need to take care of my family” all he wants. This was a spite signing by a diva. Plain and simple. Deal with it.

Anyhow enough about history, the future is bright in purple. NFL’s best running back has a receiver that could command double coverage but AP will be effective on draw plays. Once defenses try to stop that watch out for play action passes. That is what a BALANCED offense provides.

I respected Jennings when he was an opponent and now damn glad he wears my colors. An injury last year means nothing, just ask AP.

Jennings’ ego is at play in this deal. He took less in order to be “the Main Man.” There was too much competition at WR in GB, and very little in MN. He wants to enjoy the game too, not only make some coin. I understand it, I just can’t wish him any luck.

  112. jwil444 says: Mar 16, 2013 7:13 AM

The Vikings have never won a super bowl, and there’s a reason. They seemingly are unable to develop talent of their own. Rather, they only are able to find the occasional proven commodity at the tail end of their careers. Until that changes, they will never win a super bowl whereas the Packers will continue to be in the hunt every year.

  113. whatjusthapped says: Mar 16, 2013 7:26 AM

The aspect I found most insightful is that Jennings insisted at the start of free agency that the QB situation would be a factor in choosing his next team. In essence, he was admitting that he is a precise route runner and the strength of his game is stretching the defense.

In the end, it was all bluster because he signed for the most guaranteed money, not that I blame him there. The prospect that Ponder can get him the ball deep downfield makes this investment a wasted one.

There is a reason the Vikings never won a Superbowl and haven’t been to one in over 30 years. Its their front office bone headed moves like this one.

To everyone who says Jennings won’t produce because of ponder, I seem to remember that last year before Harvin got hurt he was leading the league in receiving and receptions. He was even getting mvp consideration. Some of that was due to special teams but give ponder some credit in that too. He was throwing him the ball. He also made plays when he needed to make them. As a vikings fan living in Kansas City, trust me, don’t let Cassel near the field unless ponder is hurt!

Yeah, he is too old to play WR, just like Russell Wilson is too short to play QB. It is time to start judging players by what they do on the field, and not by stupid sterotypes.

    ———————————————————-

I’m agreeing with you — but Jennings has had injury issues the last two years. Last season, especially.

This situation reminds me of Aaron Kampman who was a star in Green Bay, signed a huge contract with Jax but his injuries prevented him from realizing much further success.

Florio’s right — Jennings, using a biblical reference, has traded his birthright in Green Bay for a cup of porridge (and Mr. NoodleArm for a QB). In the end, I believe he’ll regret it.

  117. gbfanforever says: Mar 16, 2013 8:19 AM

He seems old because he was injured a lot the last two years and doesn’t have deep speed anymore. He’s still a solid player and is an improvement for the Vikings. He was the packs 4th best receiver at this point (Cobb, Nelson and Finley) so they certainly couldn’t pay him $9 mil a year. I will always like him, especially since he convinced the vikes to give him such a ludicrous contract it hurts them at other positions. It isn’t every day a sub six foot tall receiver with a 4.5 40 gets this kind of money.

  118. wkheathjr says: Mar 16, 2013 8:36 AM

Why the bitching? Packers already planned on letting him go and he just went with the one who was willing to pay him what he thought he was worth. That’s the bottom line.

It is not like Jennings did what Favre did to the Packers.. Favre divorce was a mess that never went away for few years.. Jennings divorce was so easy no one is even gonna look back.. so packers, quit ya yapping and whining!

  119. publicteamforever says: Mar 16, 2013 8:52 AM

Sure they want to run the ball better but I’m pretty sure they proved you can win without running it well. On the other hand, look at the vikings over the last three years. They’ve been putrid over the last three years WITH the best rb in football. Receivers and RBs help but it’s who’s behind center that determines whether you’re a winner or loser in the NFL.

Nice work MF, although it’s not hard to gin up a fight between Packer and Viking fans.
Here’s the truth – nobody else made Jennings an offer. Over the course of the last year, Green Bay dropped their offer to Jennings from 10 mil to less that what he got from Minnesota. Whatever they saw, his value to them diminished over the course of one year, whether that was on or off the field or both.
And nobody else in the league made on offer to a guy you would think would get plenty as a top five free agent. He ended up taking 9.5 with 18 mil guaranteed……….from the only team to make him an offer. There was no bidding war for Jennings, Green Bay made one offer and it was for less than they had offered last year. Nobody else but Minnesota was interested.
What does that tell you? Remember a year ago when Jennings was supposed to go to a major market team and pursue his acting career?

  134. rj6976 says: Mar 16, 2013 10:17 AM

In all honesty for him to come back to GB it would’ve had to be on the cheap. Realistically he would have been a third or 4th option. He said it himself in his press conference, there is a lot of young talent over there. Stay good stay young is the mantra. Get Rodgers Mathews and raji re- upped and keep rolling. As packer fans we need to be thankful that our GM doesn’t treat the salary cap like a college freshman with a new credit card ( I think Speilman is starting to go that route as well).

As a Packer fan and a Greg Jennings fan, i am glad he got paid. He had to do something at this point in his career. Green Bay offered him a 2 year deal, but what happens after that?

I hope Greg can catch some balls in Minny. He will definately have to get used to not having the ball thrown right onto hs fingertips. Pounder isn’t very accurate and Greg is a timing guy, real precise. He will have to retrain for that sloppy offensive scheme.

I have been a Packer fan for many years. I had never been to Green Bay until I attended Brett Favres last game at Lambeau.
What I was exposed to was a classless, hillbilly, navel gazing group of fans. The disdain for superbowl hero Jennings is just so typical and predictable among small minded Packer fans who believe they are the center of the football universe. Who among these hypocrites would turn down an almost 50m contract to perhaps maybe get a backstreet named after them.
I recommend to any Packer fan whose not been to Green Bay to spend a day there….you will be switching allegiances the next day!

    Technically…wasn’t Green Bay’s offer more?

  152. ragnar81 says: Mar 16, 2013 12:22 PM

Bottom line is this: Minnesota was in a lose/lose spot here. If they would have passed on Jennings, they would be called “cheap” and slammed for not bringing in a top WR. Now that they have done that, they took a “cast off” and someone Green Bay “didn’t want anyway.” Time will tell if the Vikings overpaid or not, but there can be no argument Jennings makes a significant impact and upgrade to a dismal receiver corps.

  153. hazelmn says: Mar 16, 2013 1:11 PM

Since the Vikings entered the league, their winning percentage is actually higher than the Packers. The Vikings problem has always been game day coaching. What separates the Packers titles from the Vikings non-titles are a total of about 20 points spread across 5 key games.

Other than that, these franchises are quite comparable.

And for any Packer fan who says it is tacky to poach someone else’s talent, I hope you were never a Charles Woodson fan.

  154. juliusleazer says: Mar 16, 2013 1:20 PM

I don’t appreciate the insinuation that all packer fans are resentful of players who leave the team. Fact is, there are too many high profile players on the team to keep everyone. Jennings didn’t have the opportunity to return to the Packers at a fair deal, so why should we hold that against him? I won’t, and I don’t think most sensible pack fans would either. I wish him luck and all the best: this guy is a year removed from being considered among the best at the position.

  158. deltaoracle says: Mar 16, 2013 4:08 PM

He has not squandered one ounce of goodwill as far as I’m concerned. Jennings is nothing but class. He went where he got the best deal. I wish it had been somewhere else, but I feel not the slightest bit of animosity toward him. I hope he has a great season except for the two games against GB. And I’m grateful for the many great games he gave the Pack. Best of luck to him.

Went on a run of near perfection – then overcame a mass spree of injuries to our roster to win a 2nd consecutive division title…

Only eliminated by loaded/healthy physical teams like The Giants/49ers …

What have the vikings done …ever ?
Sign a bunch of washed up Packers – talk smack about how the Packers are over – how their fans are class less – gay jokes about Packer Players/Fans – etc. – followed up with …a superbowl title ? – no … yet the dope fans keep trashing on the pack – smh.

  161. mp4pack says: Mar 16, 2013 6:18 PM

Greg had become quite vocal about not wanting to play in the cold, and clearly didn’t appreciate how easily replaceable he was during his many trips to the bench with injuries. He’s a quality reciever but won’t overpower anyone or burn anyone deep, he can’t take over a game and is a borderline 1/2 at best who benefitted greatly from playing with 2 HOF quarterbacks. He isn’t worth that kind of coin, but as desperate as the Vikes were at the position I can understand why they gave it to him. I’m not bitter and I don’t wish him the best, I’m pretty indifferent. It seems there are far more people complaining about how bitter Packer fans are than there are actual bitter Packer fans.

  162. cags777 says: Mar 16, 2013 7:08 PM

mp4pack, you’re entitled to your own opinions. But you’re not entitled to your own facts regarding those of us complaining about bitter Packers fans. On this site and others, I have seen numerous Packers fans (not all, but many) who are bitter about this that they’ll find anything to knock Greg Jennings – even if it’s a lie. As I pointed out in a post last night, Jennings knew he wasn’t going to be back with the Packers and so did Coach Mike McCarthy and General Manager Ted Thompson. Jennings was looking for a new job opportunity elsewhere – something we all do when we’re either going to be fired or are looking for a change. So he made a business decision to sign on with another team. Jennings never dissed the Packers fans, Aaron Rodgers, and the organization as a whole (unlike Packers tight end Jermichael Finley). So why continue to defend and encourage the bitterness of fans?

How many Super Bowls have the Viking s won with their plan of finding talent on the teams in their division ?

The Vikings and Eagle s are the same.
2 Pathetic teams with ZERO Super Bowl Wins !
The Viking s have 0 Super Bowl Wins
The Viking s have 0 Super Bowl wins.

Jennings should have plenty of time to reflect on his age while he’s patiently waiting for Ponder thrown footballs to finally arrive.

  165. cornerblitz says: Mar 19, 2013 11:45 AM

Oh I won’t give Jennings a hard time at Lambeau, he helped win us a Superbowl and is a all around class act. I’ll give him a thanks and a cheer back at Lambeau.

  166. tcstunner says: Mar 19, 2013 9:35 PM

LOL. I love all these Packers fans saying how bad Ponder sucks. What happened that last game vs Green Bay. You know the one where Green Bay couldve one and got the 2nd seed? Oh, yeah, Ponder threw for 274 yards 3TD and 0INTs. Yep, Ponder just sucks. Oh, and that was with NO worthwhile WR except Wright. So, if Ponder sucks, then what does it say about that Packers that he had such a good game, with no WR’s against your precious team?

  167. tcstunner says: Mar 19, 2013 9:56 PM

Why do all of these Packers fans keep saying nobody else offered Jennings a contract. The Patriots offered him a deal. You know, the best team in the NFL for the last decade. They wanted him, but yeah, he just sucks.

These teams are their own nemesis by signing Players who think that they are divas, guys such as Randy Moss, Terrell Owens, Chad Johnson, etc. they run their mouth to the adoring media, get shunned by QBs and the coaches and ultimately devalued by the team that drafted them and made them a name, then start all over again by some desperate team who will overpay him and get nothing for the contract.
Lets hope Jennings is not one of those divas.
