Jets, Raiders among teams showing interest in Geno Smith

AP

Geno Smith threw well at West Virginia’s Pro Day, and talk is increasing that he’s going to be not just the first quarterback taken but one of the first players off the board at any position. And we can add the Jets and the Raiders to the list of the teams believed to be interested.

The Newark Star-Ledger says the Jets have interest in Smith, while the Contra Costa Times suggests the Raiders are interested in drafting Smith.

Previous reports have suggested that the Jaguars are interested, and the Eagles sent a contingent to West Virginia to get a private workout with Smith.

The Jaguars have the second overall pick, the Raiders have the third, the Eagles have the fourth and the Jets have the ninth. From all indications, Smith won’t be getting out of the Top 10.

And if there’s some other team out there that really loves Smith, that team may need to start thinking about placing a call to the Chiefs.

  1. He will be a solid player but perhaps not right away. Not sure who he compares to though, perhaps Jim Kelly? Jim was just before my time so I could be way off base but from what i remember the skill set seems similar.

  2. Smith doesn’t go before 6. If there are that many teams interested in him the Browns will gladly trade down. For the right price of course.

  3. Of the qb’s in this years draft, he may be the best of a poor crop…the tallest midget in the circus.

  4. I guess you don’t know that Lurie went to his pro day. You forgot to report the eagles interest too

Michael David Smith: I guess you don’t know what the third paragraph says. You forgot to read the post before commenting.

  5. As a WVU fan, clearly I am biased. I don’t think Geno is as good as Luck or Griffin. I do think he is better than Tannehill. Tannehill went at pick 8 last year. So, given that, putting him Top 10 is reasonable. Plus, most pundits agree that picks 1-25 really aren’t that far apart. It’s a weak draft. However, I always assumed he would go in the 20s with one of the crappier teams moving up (a la Weeden last year) to get him.

  6. Based on the state of the Jets franchise, a more accurate headline should be the Jets are excited about the possibility of drafting Clowney with the first pick of the 2014 draft.

  7. The rumors are rolling in exactly on time. The Chiefs could get calls from the Jets, Bills and Cardinals today!

  8. This is the best thing about the new CBA- you can take a “flier” on a prospect like Smith high up the draft without worrying that you have financially crippled yourself. If not for that, I doubt teams would even be considering him until much later.

  9. @ 1uniquename – other than throwing a football out of his right hand, how exactly does he compare to Jim Kelly? Should have passed…

MDS trolling his own post, making fun of dense Eagle fans!

  10. Also from the article MDS quoted….

“It’s also possible that the Raiders are showing interest in Smith only as a means of increasing their leverage for a potential deal with a team interested in trading up for the No. 3 pick so that it can be assured of getting Smith.”

This sounds much more plausible to me.

  11. I don’t think I’d be completely surprised if the Raiders do make this pick. Ford, Moore, Criner, McFadden, Streater plus the good parts of the O-Line are still here. Get him one of the solid TE’s available in free agency and use the rest of this years picks on the trenches. Use next years massive cap relief to rebuild D with a young offense that has a year under it’s belt.

  12. Run, Geno. Run away fast as you can.
Then again, don’t run fast. The Raiders might draft you.

BTW, you don’t have to troll your own articles, MDS. That’s what the commenters are for. Trust, somebody would’ve let him have it for his lack of reading comprehension skills.

  13. it would be funny a few of these QBs in the “weak” class came out and dominated. It would make a lot of so called draft experts really re think their job title.

odds are not very high though but its something i would really enjoy.

  14. Do the Bills trade up to #1 is that what no free agency means????? Or……..does Doug Marrone want to continue the ride with Ryan Nassib? @footballady52

  15. The Lions would love to trade out of the 5th spot if Milliner, Joeckel, and Fisher are all off the board.

It’s quite possible any interested team could jump up in front of the Bills to the 5th spot to take Smith.

  16. Kansas City has traded the #1 pick in the 2013 draft to the ……………? Kansas City is methodically taking over the league

  17. Not a first round quarterback, especially for a cold weather team such as the Jets or the Bills. Did anyone see the Pinstripe Bowl? It was cold snowy and windy and the guy did not want to be on the field. It was evident in his body actions and his play.

  18. Two things. First, Michael, can you make it so that we can give thumbs up on your responses too. I want to “like” your dis on the guy who wrote a comment based on the title and not the article, but I can’t without it looking like I’m supporting that halfwit.

Second, has no one watched tape on this kid. He puts up amazing numbers…. against awful defenses. He’s 0-3 against Syracuse, and lost what, 5 of their last 6 games this year? He is Tim Couch 2.0. All numbers, no substance.

  19. A few weeks ago I was starting to believe that Buffalo would have a clear shot at Drafting Smith with their #8th overall pick. After reading many Mock Drafts, Blogs and conversing with other fans, I now believe that he will be off the board within the first 4 picks. Either KC will get a boatload of picks for their spot or the Raiders, Cardinals, Eagles or Jets will grab him with their first rounder. I think we are stuck looking at Nassib, Barkley or Manuel in the late first or early second round.

    BOOM. Roasted.
    Awesome.

  21. OOOORRRR…..

its possible that this information was drummed up by the Chiefs so that anyone else that wants him will need to take THEIR spot.

  22. The way it’s been going for the steelers wouldn’t surprise me if they waste a first rounder on this guy

  23. You all do realize that there is no guarantee that the teams he is available to will be in position to draft a better one next year. Take a top talent when you can. Which will be early based on other available players. But nonetheless they have no choice but to take a qb when they can. Use logic not rankings. Couple that logic with the fact of slotted payscales and the reality that corner backs (for example) aren’t getting paid in free agency means that it is hard to stomach milliner at the rate an early draft position would put him. Thus, offensive tackles and d lineman and qbs will be taking early. Money matters. All that said he is a top 5 pick guaranteed.

  24. I heard Buffalo will trade up to get him? If not you know they are hoing to draft a bust in Nassib QB from Syracuse! He doesn’t have arm strength to throw down feild!

i almost reported this comment. Geno compares to Jim Kelly? Are u high? Geno wishes he did

  26. Yet another weak post, PFT. 29 teams attended, and I’m sure all 32 teams are “interested”. It’s called due diligence.

  27. They said 28 teams sent scouts to watch the Pro day. Who were the 3 teams no there? West Virginia has other good players working out too. Anyone know who the 3 teams were?

  28. Jets are in BIG trouble, I wonder what their plan is, do they have a identity. I can’t understand why a football franchise would just wash away an entire year, this team can compete as constructed and I don’t see them picking enough talent in the draft to play winning football.

  29. Reggie is going to evaluate every person in this draft and will pick the best person at that pick regardless of need his intrest in geno is probably just to cause hype to trade down #longlivedarthdavis

I find it pretty cool that MDS reads and posts replies to the comments, especially the dumber ones. Florio is too high and mighty to respond to posts, but MDS isn’t and is a trash talker.

Jets or Raiders will swap 1st round pick and their #2 to get get Smith.
    —————
Yeah, McKenzie called Mike Brown and asked if they can have their #2 back so they can give it away in division.

  32. Why would the Raiders draft geno … After the Jamarcus fiasco … I think they learned their lesson.

  33. When Alex Smith was traded to KC and I suggested that they were getting their ducks in a row to trade down out of the first pick, I had guys coming out of the woodwork to tell me I was crazy.

Now it is looking like there will be enough interest in Geno that they might be able to trade out of 1 and still get Joeckel in the first round, as well as offsetting the the lost picks in the Smith trade.

What is it with you and the Jets???
If this was about Viennese violins, no doubt you’d reply with the Jets contained in the body of same.
How can anyone assign any credibility to your reservoir of bias?

  35. Raiders leverage with that third pick keeps on building. Bills, Jets, Cardinals and Eagles will all be calling Reggie to see whats up with the third overall pick.

  36. Big reg isn’t that dumb. He s acting like he’s interested so someone will trade down and we will get more picks since this years draft is weak.

  37. The Raiders don’t need Geno, they need offensive linemen who can block for the quarterbacks we already have. Tyrelle Pryor is our rising young star and unlike Jerky Boy Russell he’s learning the NFL system by being a backup to some great USC QB’s.

I hope the Raiders use their third pick wisely and get a quality athlete who can fill a need. A sturdy running back who can last a whole season would be awesome. Or a great wide receiver would be a help as well as better blockers.

    Go Raiders!!! Draft Wisely!!!
