Patriots sign Adrian Wilson

Adrian Wilson, Early Doucet AP

Adrian Wilson, the 12-year veteran and five-time Pro Bowler whose time with the Cardinals came to an end last week, is heading to New England.

Wilson signed a three-year deal with the Patriots, Mike Jurecki of XTRA Sports 910 reports. Wilson said this week that he wants to play three more years, so if things go well he’ll end his career with the Patriots.

Although Wilson’s play fell off last season in Arizona, he’s a smart and savvy veteran who will fit in well on Bill Belichick’s defense. Safety was a need on that defense, and Wilson fills a hole in the secondary.

With Wilson off the board, there aren’t many good veteran safeties still available in free agency. For the teams still looking to add a safety, Ed Reed’s price may have just gone up.

Great signing by the Pats with Freeney, Abraham and Emmanuel Sanders all in NE at the moment, also. BB is looking smarter than ever.

Finally. Now bring back Talib and the Pats are right back in the contention.

It doesn’t matter who Brady throws to remember he didn’t win three Super Bowls with Pro Bowl receivers.

Wilson and a couple pass rushers will do wonders for a young up and coming patriots defense .

I always thinks it’s funny when people whose initials aren’t TB sign multi-year contracts with the Patriots.

My advice to them is “rent, don’t buy”.

  11. ravenmuscle says: Mar 15, 2013 8:01 PM

OR….his price will be coming way down. Reed wants $7 million a year like he last got from the Ravens. Actually he got $7.2 million for last year. Apparently the Texans “only” offered him around $5 million a year. The problem with Ed is that he no longer can tackle due to his nerve impingement condition in his neck….so he just likes to guess and roam around on the back end to try and pick off a few passes now and then. Far too often he’s way out of position and gives up an easy touch. He loves to just use roll blocks or body blocks to knock guys down…don’t look for any tackling from this guy…just refuses to do it to protect his neck.

  12. canadianpatriotsfan says: Mar 15, 2013 8:01 PM

Called this right when I saw his release a week ago. Great signing! Did want Ed Reed, but Adrian is 3 years younger…makes much more sense!

I’m also predicting the Pats sign Dumervil…you heard it hear first.

  21. drindt says: Mar 15, 2013 8:15 PM

As a long time Cards fan I was extremely sad to see this guy leave. No one deserves to be part of a contending organization more than A-Dub. Doesnt talk much, leads by example. Classy guy and he will be missed, smart move by the Pats.

  22. easywolf says: Mar 15, 2013 8:15 PM

    Great sign

  23. deedub1639 says: Mar 15, 2013 8:16 PM

I’m curious… Have you folks watched A-dub play the last 2 years? He was a liability in pass coverage. If….If…. He plays in a system where he doesn’t ever have to cover anyone he’s good to go. Some advice get another safety for passing downs. BTW He is my absolute favorite NFL player. I’m glad he went to a good organization. Just don’t expect too much from him.

  24. jtchernak says: Mar 15, 2013 8:17 PM

This is a great signing. Now we have the SS we needed to punish receivers over the middle. Bring Talib back and sign a pass rushing DE/LB Dumervil/Freeney/Abraham and we are ready to go.

There us a rumor floating around Cleveland for Phil Taylor for Ryan Mallett and Arizona Mallet + pick for Fitz.

  27. clssylssy says: Mar 15, 2013 8:21 PM

    Yay?

  33. deedub1639 says: Mar 15, 2013 8:30 PM

I didn’t say he has nothing in the tank. I’m saying he never was great in coverage.. He’s worse now. I would say he is great addition to the Pats. Just don’t expect him to cover anyone. Blitzing awesome, tackling awesome, run stopping great, man or zone coverage poor

  36. harrisbarton says: Mar 15, 2013 8:34 PM

I think it’s notable that the 49ers who are looking for safety help and who know Wilson well didn’t bring him to Santa Clara.

As has already been stated, he’s a prototypical strong safety. Good run support, good blitzer, can hit, but a liability in pass coverage. A linebacker in a safety’s body.

  42. truths4all says: Mar 15, 2013 8:49 PM

I root for AW to succeed here, but he has really lost some speed so I expect them to really maximize his talents in nickel packages where he can rush the QB and get more sacks as well as provide up close pass coverages. It makes no sense to play him in regular defense other than coverages like Tampa2s or other coverages where his lack of speed is minimized and his huge hitting talents are magnified where receivers make the sound of “SPLAT!!!” after Wilson hits them.

  43. mrtampa says: Mar 15, 2013 8:49 PM

He’ll play strong safety, in the box. They have McCourty roaming centerfield quite nicely now. Things are coming together for the Pats. Hey Miami fan, you think Wallace/Best/Hartline/Keller will be torching the Pats this season? How so, will they hand off to them? You still have a rag-arm under center. Miami will be just where they belong, looking up at the Pats again at the end of the season. But it sure does feel good to spend 60 million bucks on a WR with frying pan hands.

  54. atwatercrushesokoye says: Mar 15, 2013 9:49 PM

I love reading about how every move is just “another example of the genius of Belichick” when the truth is he’s whiffed almost nonstop since Pioli left. Haynesworth and Chad Johnson were “great signings” who would thrive in the Patriots way…not so much. Brandon Lloyd was the missing piece and was gonna be huge in the Patriots system…not so much. Every player they’ve drafted was the fix for their defense…not so much.

Not saying this move will be horrible but lets quit thinking everything the Patriots do will be gold because it’s Belichick, the results just don’t indicate that.

And for the Mallet and a pick for Fitzgerald “rumor” unless that pick is a super duper first round pick where the Cards will be given the first 3 overall picks in the draft, Mallett isn’t getting you Fitzgerald.

To the redskin guy. Superior owner hc and qb? Plz !brady is twice the qb rg3 is and belichick is twice the hc shanny is. You cant even compare owners. What have they won? Watch as def take away read option this year and rg3 has to make more than 1 down field read. He will not be as good as this year. Plus hes frail. The team has zero money because of stupid ds overpaying every player. The tead option is a flash in the pan just like the wildcat. Shanny hasnt won since elway left. This run by new england is unprecedented and is far from over. By the way im a dolphin fan not pats fan. Be realistic if u have any knowledge at all.

  68. patfanken says: Mar 15, 2013 11:31 PM

Pneck, you have it right on the money. First and foremost Wilson will provide some experience and leadership the Pats secondary sorely needs. But beyond that Wilson gives the Pats a physical presence that the Pats have sorely missed since Rodney retired. A true run stopping SS who can blitz.

I think the Pats will use him at SS on first downs and run situations, and then use him against TE’s as a coverage LB in man and cover 2. He might have slowed down for DB, but he’d be a fast coverage LB.

He’s probably not a 3 down safety anymore, but he could be a big help if he’s played in situations where he can play to his strengths and protect him from his weaknesses.

  70. tedmurph says: Mar 15, 2013 11:41 PM

No nflguru, Pats fans aren’t still sensitive about losing to the cards, I forgot all about that blip on the radar watching the Pats in the AFC Championship game. Haters like to remember the times the Pats whiffed on guys like Lynch and Haynesworth. The thing about it is the Pats usually bring these guys in on the cheap or low-risk contracts, they don’t care. It pays off more often with guys like Bobby Hamilton, Brian Cox, Roman Phifer, Ted Washington, RHarrison, Brian Waters, Andre Carter, etc. Little pieces that play small roles that help the Pats beat your teams and remain SB contenders yr after year. Sometimes these veterans get rejuvenated for one more swing at the ring. It’s good business. If it doesn’t work out, they’re quick to cut their losses.

  71. jumboli says: Mar 15, 2013 11:49 PM

As a Cardinal fan I wish A-Dub the best. He was a great leader and was a Cardinal fan favorite. Unfortunately, with age, the injury bug caught up a couple of years ago and his play vastly declined last year. I would love to see him get another chance at a Superbowl. Good luck with the Pats A-Dub. You will be missed.

  72. tedmurph says: Mar 15, 2013 11:51 PM

Sorry nflguru, I meant that for whereyaat. Mallett is better than all 5 QB’s currently on Ariz roster, including Hoyer, who Mallett beat out in the preseason, and Kolb, who they’re about to dump. You need to up the offer.

  73. sschmiggles says: Mar 15, 2013 11:56 PM

Good signing. They don’t need him to cover the deep the part of the field. They’ll have to use Gregory, Wilson, or someone else for that.

They need him to cover shorter routes over the middle and light guys up, playing that hybrid SS/LB role. He’s perfect for that at his age.
