Patriots sign Adrian Wilson

AP

Adrian Wilson, the 12-year veteran and five-time Pro Bowler whose time with the Cardinals came to an end last week, is heading to New England.

Wilson signed a three-year deal with the Patriots, Mike Jurecki of XTRA Sports 910 reports. Wilson said this week that he wants to play three more years, so if things go well he’ll end his career with the Patriots.

Although Wilson’s play fell off last season in Arizona, he’s a smart and savvy veteran who will fit in well on Bill Belichick’s defense. Safety was a need on that defense, and Wilson fills a hole in the secondary.

With Wilson off the board, there aren’t many good veteran safeties still available in free agency. For the teams still looking to add a safety, Ed Reed’s price may have just gone up.

  1. Finally. Now bring back Talib and the Pats are right back in the contention.

It doesn’t matter who Brady throws to remember he didn’t win three Super Bowls with Pro Bowl receivers.

  2. I always thinks it’s funny when people whose initials aren’t TB sign multi-year contracts with the Patriots.

My advice to them is “rent, don’t buy”.

  3. OR….his price will be coming way down. Reed wants $7 million a year like he last got from the Ravens. Actually he got $7.2 million for last year. Apparently the Texans “only” offered him around $5 million a year. The problem with Ed is that he no longer can tackle due to his nerve impingement condition in his neck….so he just likes to guess and roam around on the back end to try and pick off a few passes now and then. Far too often he’s way out of position and gives up an easy touch. He loves to just use roll blocks or body blocks to knock guys down…don’t look for any tackling from this guy…just refuses to do it to protect his neck.

  4. Called this right when I saw his release a week ago. Great signing! Did want Ed Reed, but Adrian is 3 years younger…makes much more sense!

I’m also predicting the Pats sign Dumervil…you heard it hear first.

  5. As a long time Cards fan I was extremely sad to see this guy leave. No one deserves to be part of a contending organization more than A-Dub. Doesnt talk much, leads by example. Classy guy and he will be missed, smart move by the Pats.

  6. I’m curious… Have you folks watched A-dub play the last 2 years? He was a liability in pass coverage. If….If…. He plays in a system where he doesn’t ever have to cover anyone he’s good to go. Some advice get another safety for passing downs. BTW He is my absolute favorite NFL player. I’m glad he went to a good organization. Just don’t expect too much from him.

  7. Id love to see all these people talking about him having nothing left in the tank take a shot from him. Hahaha. Dude can still hit. Hard.

  8. This is a great signing. Now we have the SS we needed to punish receivers over the middle. Bring Talib back and sign a pass rushing DE/LB Dumervil/Freeney/Abraham and we are ready to go.

There us a rumor floating around Cleveland for Phil Taylor for Ryan Mallett and Arizona Mallet + pick for Fitz.

  9. Great player and great signing by the Patriots. Adub will always be loved and respected in Arizona as a guy who gives everything he’s got to the team and to the fans. Smashmouth player with class!

  10. I didn’t say he has nothing in the tank. I’m saying he never was great in coverage.. He’s worse now. I would say he is great addition to the Pats. Just don’t expect him to cover anyone. Blitzing awesome, tackling awesome, run stopping great, man or zone coverage poor

    Best GM ever. Go Pats.

Sorry, I think you mean Bill Polian was the best GM ever. I had to correct that for you.

  12. Ampats,

Lmao Ty for the 2nd great laugh!

Browns will not trade Taylor for mallet
Cardinals will not trade Fitzgerald for mallet let’s be real here! Those are horrible rumors!

  13. I think it’s notable that the 49ers who are looking for safety help and who know Wilson well didn’t bring him to Santa Clara.

As has already been stated, he’s a prototypical strong safety. Good run support, good blitzer, can hit, but a liability in pass coverage. A linebacker in a safety’s body.

  14. He’s a crafty veteran and a good leader, that’s something the pats secondary could use

  15. I root for AW to succeed here, but he has really lost some speed so I expect them to really maximize his talents in nickel packages where he can rush the QB and get more sacks as well as provide up close pass coverages. It makes no sense to play him in regular defense other than coverages like Tampa2s or other coverages where his lack of speed is minimized and his huge hitting talents are magnified where receivers make the sound of “SPLAT!!!” after Wilson hits them.

  16. Yup seems T-Sizz was right on….all the players around the league hate the Patriots. Arrogant bastards are bringing in all these free agents!

  17. dude cant cover, they will have to play him inside the box,as a LB type ofsafety, and oh yeah logicalvoicesays, ya gotta be kidding me, redskins and superbowl dont mix like 2 dudes and no chick

Pats are going to need SOMEONE to chase all the new Dolphin weapons.

Dolphins are gonna need SOMEONE to throw to them.

Should have signed with the Redskins for a legit chance to win the Superbowl.

Almost every story has this moron posting some crap about the Redskins….here’s to you and Lil Wayne spending the weekend downing Sizzurp…lots and lots of Sizzurp.

  20. He’ll play strong safety, in the box. They have McCourty roaming centerfield quite nicely now. Things are coming together for the Pats. Hey Miami fan, you think Wallace/Best/Hartline/Keller will be torching the Pats this season? How so, will they hand off to them? You still have a rag-arm under center. Miami will be just where they belong, looking up at the Pats again at the end of the season. But it sure does feel good to spend 60 million bucks on a WR with frying pan hands.

  21. I love reading about how every move is just “another example of the genius of Belichick” when the truth is he’s whiffed almost nonstop since Pioli left. Haynesworth and Chad Johnson were “great signings” who would thrive in the Patriots way…not so much. Brandon Lloyd was the missing piece and was gonna be huge in the Patriots system…not so much. Every player they’ve drafted was the fix for their defense…not so much.

Not saying this move will be horrible but lets quit thinking everything the Patriots do will be gold because it’s Belichick, the results just don’t indicate that.

And for the Mallet and a pick for Fitzgerald “rumor” unless that pick is a super duper first round pick where the Cards will be given the first 3 overall picks in the draft, Mallett isn’t getting you Fitzgerald.

  22. To the redskin guy. Superior owner hc and qb? Plz !brady is twice the qb rg3 is and belichick is twice the hc shanny is. You cant even compare owners. What have they won? Watch as def take away read option this year and rg3 has to make more than 1 down field read. He will not be as good as this year. Plus hes frail. The team has zero money because of stupid ds overpaying every player. The tead option is a flash in the pan just like the wildcat. Shanny hasnt won since elway left. This run by new england is unprecedented and is far from over. By the way im a dolphin fan not pats fan. Be realistic if u have any knowledge at all.

  23. How are the Dolphins going to employ all these receiving “weapons” when their QB is flat on the ground with no OL and no running game? Blitz all day…LOL.

  24. “It doesn’t matter who Brady throws to remember he didn’t win three Super Bowls with Pro Bowl receivers.”

I’m trying to remember, it was just so long ago.

  25. Ravenator:

Who gave Ozzie his first job fetching coffee? Who did Ozzie learn from? The Master, Bill Belichick.

Bill Belichick is THE original Genius.

Plus, he has a much more impressive résumé than Ozzie.

    Nice try though.

    All Hail the Genius.

  26. The Mallett rumor is true! The Cardinals are willing to trade a week old sandwich for Ryan Mallett, as long as the Patriots throw in a million bucks.

Patriots fans must still be sensitive about losing to the Cards, lol.

  27. I guess Belichick is picking up the slack since Al Davis passed. The new elephant graveyard is at 1 Patriot Place, Foxboro, MA,

  28. LOVE IT. Welcome to New England Adrian! Wilson and mccourtey at safety will compliment each other nicely. Now, we just need to sign Talib and a pass rusher (j. Abraham or d. Freeney) to rush opposite c. Jones. Good signing!

  29. Bill Belichick doesn’t need a girlfriend with all of these folks up in New England wanting to huff him.

  30. Pneck, you have it right on the money. First and foremost Wilson will provide some experience and leadership the Pats secondary sorely needs. But beyond that Wilson gives the Pats a physical presence that the Pats have sorely missed since Rodney retired. A true run stopping SS who can blitz.

I think the Pats will use him at SS on first downs and run situations, and then use him against TE’s as a coverage LB in man and cover 2. He might have slowed down for DB, but he’d be a fast coverage LB.

He’s probably not a 3 down safety anymore, but he could be a big help if he’s played in situations where he can play to his strengths and protect him from his weaknesses.

  31. No nflguru, Pats fans aren’t still sensitive about losing to the cards, I forgot all about that blip on the radar watching the Pats in the AFC Championship game. Haters like to remember the times the Pats whiffed on guys like Lynch and Haynesworth. The thing about it is the Pats usually bring these guys in on the cheap or low-risk contracts, they don’t care. It pays off more often with guys like Bobby Hamilton, Brian Cox, Roman Phifer, Ted Washington, RHarrison, Brian Waters, Andre Carter, etc. Little pieces that play small roles that help the Pats beat your teams and remain SB contenders yr after year. Sometimes these veterans get rejuvenated for one more swing at the ring. It’s good business. If it doesn’t work out, they’re quick to cut their losses.

  32. As a Cardinal fan I wish A-Dub the best. He was a great leader and was a Cardinal fan favorite. Unfortunately, with age, the injury bug caught up a couple of years ago and his play vastly declined last year. I would love to see him get another chance at a Superbowl. Good luck with the Pats A-Dub. You will be missed.

  33. Sorry nflguru, I meant that for whereyaat. Mallett is better than all 5 QB’s currently on Ariz roster, including Hoyer, who Mallett beat out in the preseason, and Kolb, who they’re about to dump. You need to up the offer.

  34. Good signing. They don’t need him to cover the deep the part of the field. They’ll have to use Gregory, Wilson, or someone else for that.

They need him to cover shorter routes over the middle and light guys up, playing that hybrid SS/LB role. He’s perfect for that at his age.

  35. And to the redskin fan who said his club has the superior owner hc, etc lol…not sure if your deaf or blind but thanks to the jets hc and owner your team is no longer viewed as the laughing stock of the league, a close second though.

  36. Billbelichecksbitch….must be really sore from being cornholed by a broncos fan all day long. pats have zero chance of seeing the Big game again in this century.

  37. Stoked. Was hoping they would sign Wilson. Have read nothing but good words and wished from the Cards fans about him. Always a good sign.

Up next, CB, DL, OL. Keep ’em comin’, Bill.

  38. Genius? Adalius Thomas, Joseph Addai, Joey Galloway, Ocho Cinco, Fred Taylor and the list goes on. Every time the Patriots get a big named free agent that is supposed to be a game changer they end up a bust. I don’t see how you Pats fans can get excited about a SS on the wrong side of 30, with that track record.

  39. Cards fans – hopefully the Pats can get your boy AW a ring next year. Lord knows I was rooting like crazy for you guys after L-Fitz scored that TD against the Steelers in the SB. Still can’t believe they let Ben score 1st and 20 from the 10, but hey, Eli did worse to us TWICE! We’ll take good care of Wilson and hopefully get him a ring that loosely extends back to his days in AZ… Lets go…is it September yet?

  40. ch1ggs says:Mar 15, 2013 8:30 PM

Freeney/Abraham/Wilson? Pats fans getting excited about over the hill players?

Chiggs you some BS never realized how many people are against the Pats around here. I am a Lions fan first but Brady went to Michigan so Pats are my #2 team. And yes Brady is the best. He will get back to the SB once if not 2 more times. So show some respect. Go Blue!!!! Ohio State sucks

  41. “logicalvoicesays says:

No I don’t. We don’t cheat here in DC and we have the superior Owner, HC and QB.”

Lol you do realize Shanahan’s salary cap cheating in the Donks Super Bowl years got them fined and docked draft picks just like the Pats after spy gate don’t you ?

  42. Why do people keep calling Belicheat a “genius”?

He’s not, really. He’s a dedicated worker, has a vision on how to run a team, and implements it.

When it doesn’t work out, he doesn’t waver. Chalk it up to experience and stay the course.

It’s a path that’s much harder than it sounds.

  43. Very sad to see him leave AZ
But if it gets him his much deserved ring
It’ll be worth it, like another great Cards player
    Larry Centers.
Cardinal fans everywhere will be cheering for the Pats!

Yeah, he’s won them with camera’s on opponents sideline as they are signal calling. 0 super bowls since they were caught…..

  45. Good signing. They don’t need him to cover the deep the part of the field. They’ll have to use Gregory, Wilson, or someone else for that.
    —————-

The problem is neither of them could last year.

  46. Hey gadzod…who are the chumps that you root for and what’s their recorg since 2ooo? You sound like a closet Jets fan. Remember 1969?

  47. Thank God Wilson got the heck out of AZ. Talk about a team going nowhere!!! The Jets might even have better qb’s than AZ. Fitzgerald should hold out until that sorry ass team finds someone who can actually throw a football! Put AZ, Balt and the Jets rosters together and you might be able to field a team that can compete in some league…CFL, maybe.

  48. Mallett and our first rounder for Fitz?

When Fitzy was re-upping with Cards several years ago, I was praying NE would make a move for him.
We’d have 5 DB victories instead of 3.

    WTF!

    Illiogical voice wouldn’t know that.
    He is 9 years old

  50. How are the Dolphins going to employ all these receiving “weapons” when their QB is flat on the ground with no OL and no running game? Blitz all day…??

Correction: Tannehill has already proven that he eats blitzs for breakfast. He was one of the top ranked QB against the blitz. You don’t watch much inner division football based on your comments… how typical from the front running fanbase.

  51. I’ve always thought highly of Wilson. The minute he was cut I was hoping the Pats would give him a look. Thanks to all the classy AZ fans who wished him well here. Speaks a lot about the type of man AW is.

The Pats’ offense has gotten better since they were caught filming their opponent’s defensive hand signals from their sidelines while the Pats’ defense has gotten much worse………….

so how does your theory work?
