Irsay says another Colts deal is coming

Getty Images

The Colts have been one of the few teams to splurge in free agency, signing plenty of players and spending plenty of cap space.

Owner Jim Irsay says another deal is coming.

He says the team is “working on a deal, one we’ve been working on for five days,” and that “we’re very, very close to making it work.”

Irsay has a history of dropping hints on Twitter.  Last year, he tweeted about a trade not long before cornerback Vontae Davis was acquired from Miami.

  32. starfan79 says: Mar 16, 2013 11:01 PM

They can trade for Anthony Spencer, cowboys need a draft pick or two and the cap space

  33. jaggedmark says: Mar 16, 2013 11:01 PM

Though the Colts would have to do some serious financial magic to figure out how to acquire Jake Long. (over the cap already, I believe)

  38. ryanpmcvey says: Mar 16, 2013 11:10 PM

As a colts fan I’d love to see it be Long from Miami. Or a receiver that can actually go deep. Or an impact veteran running back. But no it’ll be another no name veteran that nobody has herd of like the rest of their signings. Quit getting our hopes up when it’s a no name player!

  48. milkcan44 says: Mar 16, 2013 11:32 PM

The only things keeping the other owners from thinking Irsay is a complete bozo are……Jerry Jones ,Woody Johnson and Dan Synder.

  49. gweetarman says: Mar 16, 2013 11:34 PM

    It’s gotta be Jeff George.

  50. datmilehighswagistoodamnhigh says: Mar 16, 2013 11:36 PM

Its Elvis Dumervil. He put up his best numbers in a 3-4 and the Colts could use a pass rusher. I really hope not though, I just have a feeling haha

    Victor Cruz or Revis……..Sanders????

  59. ramitbaby says: Mar 17, 2013 12:23 AM

His latest is that it’s a WR. If he’s been working on it for 5 days, it isn’t Lloyd since he just got released. He’s in Arizona but I doubt it’s anyone of any substance here. MAYBE Brian Roberts but I doubt it. My guess is that it’s going to be Victor Cruz, which would really piss me off as a Ram fan since we have two higher #1’s than Indy.

  60. michaeljacksonisback says: Mar 17, 2013 12:37 AM

He must of been partying with Charlie sheen again! Here comes the weeks worth of crazy threatening tweets, followed by a very minor signing.

  61. bigbosscrispy says: Mar 17, 2013 12:37 AM

Guys, the colts are signing me off the streets….. Sorry to spill the beans

  62. phillyphan77 says: Mar 17, 2013 12:41 AM

I’m guessing they have acquired either Cole from the Eagles or Ware from the Cowboys for draft picks.

  63. coltsaddict29 says: Mar 17, 2013 12:42 AM

People.r.crazy with alot of these hunches. Not reed signed Landry. Not long signed Gosader so dont need tackle or SS with those two being or biggest signings. My guess mabey WR but not cruz there not gonna lose 2 1st round picks for him, a LB mabey since we lost Fokou,

  64. realskipbayless says: Mar 17, 2013 12:44 AM

Brett Favre coming out of retirement!!!

  65. dvo21 says: Mar 17, 2013 12:52 AM

Isray seems like one of the owners that likes to go out there and get it. I’m wouldn’t be surprised if he went after Victor Cruz. I think Cruz would be a great target for Luck. He may go after Jake Long also but I would find that to be more surprising than Victor Cruz.

  66. opneon says: Mar 17, 2013 12:53 AM

Ir-say too much!!! What a jerk…just like his dad.

  67. kyleboggs3 says: Mar 17, 2013 12:55 AM

@JimIrsay tweeted Hint It’s a wide receiver – also asked colts fans to stand by and pour a drink for support to land this whopper – hoping its a deal the giants can’t match for victor cruz, but as @natedunleavy pointed out the last time Jim was excited it was over Ricky Jean Francois. Who I actually am very excited about as well, should shore up the line, but a good point that even though Irsay says its a whopper, it could very well be another under the radar guy. Any thoughts or any rumors floating around Florio?

  68. competitivecompetitioncompeter says: Mar 17, 2013 1:02 AM

    Dwight Freeny

  69. coltzfan166 says: Mar 17, 2013 1:06 AM

As a Colts fan, I hope it’s not Revis. Not worth a first round pick and that cap space for just one year.

  70. 3sweetness4 says: Mar 17, 2013 1:07 AM

Jack Daniels or Jim Beam is my guess.

  71. coltzfan166 says: Mar 17, 2013 1:32 AM

Irsay already said its a wide receiver anyway

  72. flyeaglefly says: Mar 17, 2013 1:32 AM

  73. hogheavelyham says: Mar 17, 2013 1:42 AM

I’m just saying this before it may happen:
    Larry Fitzgerald
    1. dad publicly spoke out wanting a good quarterback
    2. Irsay mentioned Arizona in his tweets
    3. he’s calling it a big deal, a whopper of a deal

it’s not out of the realm of possibility

  74. croteus says: Mar 17, 2013 2:00 AM

He also has a post mentioning “needing your voodoo”. Another hint, or drunken rambling?

    Devery Henderson?

I’d say Donte Stallworth, but he’s busy getting into hot air balloon accidents.

Then again maybe Irsay needs a drinking buddy.

  75. ravenmuscle says: Mar 17, 2013 2:08 AM

    Its gotta be Terrell Owens.

  76. ravenmuscle says: Mar 17, 2013 2:11 AM

Or better yet….the Colts are moving back to Baltimore and Baltimore will have two teams just like New York.

  77. cantarguefacts says: Mar 17, 2013 2:11 AM

It’s a wide receiver. He just tweeted that.

  78. bbwasright says: Mar 17, 2013 2:41 AM

Irsay is a complete tool. He really cares more about getting credit for the good deal than actually putting together the team that can win. Go out there and get Brady and Dumervil and every other big name player that could surprise us. You still have to do something with all that paper-talent. Irsay has been bragging for years about the team he inherited that hasn’t done anything since. They show some real promise now, but can this guy just shut up and let his accomplishments speak for themselves, without having to twitter them in advance?!

  79. drindt says: Mar 17, 2013 2:49 AM

Im guessing Josh Cribbs, could be Cruz, as a Cardinals fan I hope like hell it isnt Fitz.

This is Irsay tweet “We’re working on a deal; one we’ve been working on for five days. We’re very, very close to making it work,” Irsay tweeted. “Colt fans, hint – it’s a wide receiver!”

I am thinking it could Emmanuel Sander, he an UFA. The Colts sign him and because of that the Colts will have to trade their 1st round pick to the Steelers.

I don’t think it’s Cruz because he just hired a new agent that will start working for him on Monday. NFL players can’t negotiate with a team without an agent.

  93. phillyphan77 says: Mar 17, 2013 9:41 AM

Considering their GM Grigson is an ex-eagle guy and the fact that he has made several trades with them, I would not be surprised if it is Maclin, Avant, Cooper, or Jackson for draft picks. Especially since the Eagles went out and traded for Benn a few days ago.

  94. indyblu18 says: Mar 17, 2013 9:44 AM

He likes to leave hints in his Tweets. I think Early Doucet is very possible. He is in Arizona for the owners meetings not to sign a WR. He has also said it is a WR. Hate him if you want to but it is his team and he enjoys the word games.

My money is on a heavy front loaded offer sheet to Victor Cruz that the Giants have no chance to match. This upcoming draft class is weak at WR and Indy gets Andrew Luck a proven weapon while giving up the #24 pick in the 1st round!

  98. peytonsneck18 says: Mar 17, 2013 10:13 AM

no way its sanders, that guy isnt worth a tweet, its a Wr who is on his last year, or is a restricted fa now, so its either cruz or fitz, not sure if fitz is on last year of his deal, but irsay did say it was depending on that players accepting an extension first, so…………

  99. peytonsneck18 says: Mar 17, 2013 10:14 AM

its for pieere garcon is coming back, we will give him a 3 year, 20 dollar extension, thats what we feel he is worth!!!

It’s not Cruz fired his agent about 6 to 7 days ago and Irsay said “he has been working on this deal for 5 days”. NFL player can’t talk to any teams without an agent. Cruz’s new agent will begin tomorrow.

Doug Baldwin will be the new “whopper” WR..hahaha! he was pushed down Seattle’s depth chart following Percy Harvin’s acquisition, and Baldwin played with Colts quarterback Andrew Luck and under new OC Pep Hamilton at Stanford. Tradet Seattle for a fifth- or sixth-round pick for Baldwin.

  107. loudmouthdog says: Mar 17, 2013 2:05 PM

I haven’t seen anyone mention Joshua Cribbs. He is a free-agent wide receiver who also would make a fantastic return man.

  108. loudmouthdog says: Mar 17, 2013 2:14 PM

And seriously – come on everybody – you don’t really think that you will go for Victor Cruz Or any other restripped agent and trade one of his four draft picks. He’s too Conservative for that.

Plus there are a lot of receivers on the market:

Josh Cribbs, Brandon Stokely, Steve Breaston, Kevin Walter from Houston, Laurent Robinson From Jacksonville, Edelman and Brandon Lloyd from New England, Devery Henderson, Dominic Hixon, Braylon Edwards, Darius Heyward-Bay, Randy Moss, and tightest young. Not to mention all the other average receivers In free agency.

So there’s about a zero chance that he is going to trade draft picks for any player.

So I’m kind of hoping Cribbs will get signed, But if I had money to Beth, it will probably be one of the average receivers.

  109. beastmode5150 says: Mar 17, 2013 3:01 PM

Hearing here in Seattle it may be a trade for Doug Baldwin. Maybe a 5-6 rounder.

  110. bleedinblue311 says: Mar 18, 2013 1:41 PM

Totally agree loud mouth. ppl dont realize how much a 1st rd pick is worth.. in an ideal situation top tier talent locked up for four years for the cheap
