Report: Browns “have looked into” Fred Davis

The Browns signed Gary Barnidge last week, but they may not be done addressing the tight end position.

Terry Pluto of the Cleveland Plain Dealer reports that the Browns have also “looked into” adding tight end Fred Davis to their roster. Davis is coming off an Achilles tear, although he says he’s been medically cleared to resume running and otherwise amp up his physical activity. Pluto reports that he isn’t sure how serious their interest is, but interest does exit.

The Redskins, who recently re-signed Logan Paulsen, are also thought to have interest in retaining Davis. They’ve expressed a preference for waiting to see how his rehab progresses, a luxury that might not be available if the Browns or someone else decides to speed up the process.

New Browns coach (and former tight end) Rob Chudzinski has been fond of throwing to tight ends in his stops as an offensive coordinator, so Davis would likely be in line for a good deal of action if he did wind up in Cleveland. Should one arise, the Browns would also likely be able to best the Redskins in a bidding war. Davis said that money wouldn’t be the deciding factor in his choice, but we’ve heard that from other players who wound up taking the money.
