Hasselbeck gets new deal, but no exclamation marks

Matt Hasselbeck AP

Maybe it’s just too early in the morning in Phoenix for Colts owner Jim Irsay to be too excited.

The Colts have officially added backup quarterback Matt Hasselbeck, with perhaps the most low-key Twitter announcement Irsay’s ever made.

Other guys have gotten multiple exclamation marks, but maybe after he referred to Hasselbeck as a “soft pillow” last night, Irsay is still a little sleepy.

From a football standpoint it’s a coup for the Colts. Hasselbeck’s still enough of a quarterback to fill in for a few weeks if Andrew Luck rolls an ankle but he’s clearly OK with being a backup at this stage in his career.

Our backup is better than most starters, especially the starter in Washington.

This roster transaction would keep me up every single night. Of all the QBs out there and all of the new QBs about to be out there, and you want Hasselbeck? Did Irsay watch the tape of last year? I did and it wasn’t pretty.

It’s sad when this is the best signing the Colts have made.

They had a chance to really beef up the team. Oh well.

You are wrong about Hasselbeck – if anything it was more to do with the team. This guy is really really good when he is in his zone, plus he is a GREAT person to have on your team as a captain of sorts.

Luck will grow much better with Hasselbeck there.

At this stage of his careeer, still a solid veteran backup for Andrew Luck. Hasselbeck provides good depth at the position.

Guy he’s a cheap safety net in case Luck gets hurt and unless your expecting Luck to miss time i don’t know why your gonna lose sleep…. even if luck does get hurt Hasselbeck is a pretty decent fill in, and plus he’s the best backup QB the colts ever signed in recent history.

Also what new QB’s are you expecting to get?? Hasselbeck was one of the best FA left out there and with all the holes the colts have it would be stupid to waste a pick on a backup

And in one fell swoop, Grigson/Irsay do what Polian never did: have a solid backup in case the worst happens. Oh, and Hass is a great team player and person too. Although in Polain’s defense, I’ve heard from people who knew former Colts players that being PM’s backup was not really a good job for many reasons.

The colts fans should feel very lucky to have a backup
Quarterback the caliber of Matt Hasselbeck. I know the Titans fans aren’t happy about losing him.

Well, maybe Jim Irsay doesn’t use his exclamation points as haphazardly as you do.

    Hass = class.

At this point he’s playing cuz he loves the game, not because he needs the money or thinks he has a shot at starting somewhere or to get the ring the Stealers stole from him. He has Warren Moon’s Seattle TV job
waiting for him whenever he hangs up his cleats. They may as well put his #8 up in the ring of honor at the C-Link now and cover it with a tarp for the time being.

As a Seahawks fan I wasn’t happy to lose him 2 years ago, especially when he was replaced by T Jax. A leader, team player and competitive almost to a fault. He is a solid back up for the Colts.
    Go get ‘em Matt!
