Kraft says Belichick is the best coach ever, Brady is the best QB ever

Dallas Cowboys v New England Patriots Getty Images

Everyone would agree that Bill Belichick is one of the best coaches in the NFL and Tom Brady is one of the best quarterbacks in the NFL. But Patriots owner Robert Kraft would go a lot further than that.

Kraft told Mike Florio on Pro Football Talk on NBC Sports Network that Belichick is the best coach in the history of the game, and Brady is the best quarterback in the history of the game. And Kraft said he feels privileged to own a team with those two men holding down the two most important jobs for the franchise.

“I don’t think there’s been one in the history of the NFL — I think we’re privileged to have, probably, the finest coach and the finest quarterback, and we happen to have them at the same time,” Kraft said. “It’s going to be hard to win continuously without a good coach and a good quarterback. Next season, please God, will be our 20th season. And we’ve hired two coaches in that time — two head coaches — and we’ve had two quarterbacks start for our team in those 20 seasons.”

With Brady saying he wants to play until he’s 40 and Belichick showing no interest in trading his hoodies for golf clubs, Kraft may have his quarterback and his coach for another five years. Or more.

  36. redrew says: Mar 19, 2013 6:51 PM

And in his mind, Welker is worth less than Danny Amendola or Chad Ochostinko. The era of “the Patriots way” is over. Kraft has been outed as the plantation master that beholds to no one. While Elway includes Manning in team building discussions, Kraft tricks Brady into accepting half his worth in “team friendly” contracts……then kicks the best WR in team history to the curb with an insulting incentive based contract, knowing full well Welker will flee Foxboro after being publicly humiliated.

Pats fans don’t give me, “the video wasn’t a major factor” crap. If the videos were no big deal Goodell wouldn’t have went all watergate on it and destroy the tape. He calculated the outcry would be more if the tapes were made public.

  51. jikkle49 says: Mar 19, 2013 6:59 PM

I would easily rank Lombardi, Walsh, and Landry as better coaches.

Walsh brought concepts to not just offense but drafting and running a team that are still used today.

Check the coaching tree as well. All of Belichick’s coaches in his tree have been failures as head coaches while Walsh’s coaches have had success as NFL head coaches.

  56. patriots87 says: Mar 19, 2013 7:02 PM

Montana and Walsh are the only two at their positions that you could say are better than Brady and Belichick. But Brady and Belichick have had their success in the free agency period. which increases their difficulty margin. Therefore:

    Belichick>Walsh
    Brady > Montana

  57. 808raiderinparadise says: Mar 19, 2013 7:02 PM

As a Vikings fan it’s hard to say… But Chuck Knoll and Terry Bradshaw were very good together for a long time. Having said that, Bud once said Don Shula was the best coach. Something about being able to take his and beat yours or take yours and beat his.

For my money no one ever did more with less than Grant and Tarkenton. Sure they never won the big one… But they got there and beat better teams year after year to do it with limited or old talent. Ahh the memories.

  66. all4patriots says: Mar 19, 2013 7:11 PM

To get hits, in your headline you left out an important word spoken by Kraft:

“PROBABLY, the finest coach and the finest quarterback”

  67. 23chameleons says: Mar 19, 2013 7:13 PM

Based on what ? Bill Walsh, father of the west coast offense, ranks where then ? Lombardi ? Gibbs ? Noll ? Shula ? Halas ? Landry ? Paul Brown ? Curly Lambeau ? Currently BB ranks just above Marty Schottenheimer and Chuck Knox in all-time wins and NO ONE is calling them the greatest coaches in NFL history. Kraft was as mistaken in that statement as he was in determining Welker’s market value.

  68. j0esixpack says: Mar 19, 2013 7:14 PM

  69. pajabroni says: Mar 19, 2013 7:14 PM

  70. thetooloftools says: Mar 19, 2013 7:15 PM

  71. armorgan67 says: Mar 19, 2013 7:16 PM

As a Redskins fan you have to put Joe Gibbs in the discussion. Look at what he did. He’s only coach to win 3 Super Bowls with 3 different QB’s. No other coach can say that. All the other great coaches had their franchise QB for the titles. Lombardi had Starr, Walsh had Montana, Landry had Staubach, Noll had Bradshaw, Shula had Griese, Belicheck has Brady. Gibbs was just as good and he did it with less. I seriously doubt Belicheck would have won 3 Super Bowls without Brady.

    (1) Walsh and Montana have my vote for Coach and QB combo.
    (2) You could give it to Vince Lombardi and Bart Starr as well. 9 seasons, 5 NFL Championships, 6 Conference Titles, only team in NFL history to 3 peat, the Super Bowl Trophy named in his honor. Enough said.
    (3) Knoll and Bradshaw have to be mentioned in the conversation; both very underrated for having led their teams to 4 Superbowl Championships.
    (4) Gibbs is ahead of Belichick by virtue of the fact that he coached three teams to three Super Bowl championships with three different QB’s.
Shula coached two different teams to NFL Super Bowl, winning two times, and also the only Undefeated Superbowl Champion head coach in NFL history.
    (5) I would take Bill Parcells over Bill Belichick. Two time Super Bowl Champion with two different QB’s, in the 1980’s and 1990’s pre salary cap competing against the 49er’s out of conference, Cowboys, Skins, Philly, Bears in conference and took two different teams to the Super Bowl. Belichick has not ever had that juggernaut to contend against year in and year out in his conference.
Heck, some could argue that a non champion coach such as Don Coryell and his offensive genius has had and will continue to have a greater impact on the history of football on any level than Bill Belichick.
Belichick is a great head coach. Brady is a great QB. HOFer’s both for sure, but let’s have some perspective.

Shula coached two different teams to NFL Super Bowl, winning two times, and also the only Undefeated Superbowl Champion head coach in NFL history.
    (5) I would take Bill Parcells over Bill Belichick. Two time Super Bowl Champion with two different QB’s, in the 1980′s and 1990′s pre salary cap competing against the 49er’s out of conference, Cowboys, Skins, Philly, Bears in conference and took two different teams to the Super Bowl.

Bill Belichick is not the greatest coach ever – Brady may be the best QB ever, however.

Looking at Carroll’s success in Seattle, if he had Brady I wonder what could have been. If you have the players NE has had, it would really be difficult to not be successful. Great organization, but I cannot say Belichick is the reason – and I agree with some others who think NE would have won more Superbowls if he was that good.

  101. dobreshunka says: Mar 19, 2013 7:43 PM

Lombardi, Landry, Shula, Noll, Parcells, Coughlin, theres six better coaches off the cuff. Paul Brown makes it seven.

Montana, Unitas, Marino, Favre, Staubach, Bradshaw…there’s six better QBs without giving it a second thought.

Someone needs to tell Kraft he’s perilously close to turning into Dan Snyder with all this crazy talk. They should also tell him to stick his head in a bucket of paint.

  102. jetsjetsjetsnow says: Mar 19, 2013 7:43 PM

Thats a real toss up between them & Walsh-Montana.

  103. backindasaddle says: Mar 19, 2013 7:44 PM

“The Best Ever” is a very tall order. Mr. Kraft is just getting a bit nostalgic as he gets up there in years. I will say, however, the he himself is one of the very best owners in all of professional sports and maybe the best owner in the NFL. The rise of the New England Patriots franchise since he took ownership has been unprecedented. When he took ownership the franchise was in receivership and on the brink of bring moved to St. Louis. It is now either 2 or 3 of all NFL franchises in terms of overall monetary/market value and have the highest winning percentage of any NFL team over the past decade. I’d say Mr. Kraft/Bill Belichick/Tom Brady make for one hell of a combination.

  104. firejimmy says: Mar 19, 2013 7:45 PM

I’ll give them the best combo ever surpassing Marino/Shula & Montana/Walsh, and the fact that Manning played for 4 guys that can’t begin to compare to Belichick.

  112. tedmurph says: Mar 19, 2013 7:50 PM

Kraft left something out. He’s been the best owner in sports for the last 20 yrs. Built his own stadium, largely out of his own pocket, and has the best record in the NFL since he came on the scene, buying a franchise that was the laughingstock of the NFL. Kraft, Belichick and Brady are one of the two top triumverates in the history of the NFL. Only the DeBartalo, Walsh, Montana trio even have an argument. Since the Pats did it during the salary cap era, when it was harder to do, and I’m a biased fan, I give it to the Pats.

Cheater posters, really hang it up. You sound like idiots. If you think you have the slightest effect on Pats fans, you’re kidding yourselves. Stop wasting your time. Sorry the Pats broke your dreams.

Maybe if Brady/Belichick win a couple more SuperBowl’s.

  131. jjmurphy1127d says: Mar 19, 2013 8:07 PM

As a 15-year Pats season ticket holder, I’ll start with a thank you. Belichick and Brady are the best of the salary cap era, no question, not even close. 3 Super Bowl wins, 5 Super Bowl appearancnes/AFC championships, 7 AFC title game appearances, 10 AFC East titles in 12 seasons (in both of the years that they did not win division, they tied for title, but lost tie-break – one of those seasons Brady went down in 1st game and they still went 11-5, so technically as a tandem they are 10 for their 11 in AFC East)

Of all time though? Ever? Nope, not yet at least. They are likely in top 3-7 each individually in their respective peer groups and top 3-5 as a HC/QB tandem. Likely need 1 or maybe 2 more Super Bowl wins to go to #1.

  137. iknowallsometimes says: Mar 19, 2013 8:15 PM

There is one main thing to mention about this article. Kraft didn’t come out and actually say that Brady and Belicheck are the best ever definitively. Stop reading the headline of the article and actually read the quote from Mr. Kraft. He did mention that “he doesn’t think there’s been one in the history of the NFL” (from a tenure standpoint) and that they are “probably the finest coach and QB tandem”. What else do you want to man writing the checks to say…? With that being said, this is his belief and what he thinks and it’s not necessarily gospel.

In regards to the quote, it’s hard to argue “the greatness tandem” when you put it in that context. They been together for a long time and have produced winning seasons practically every year with super bowl wins (still no asterisk in the official books nor anything that mentions cheating…if and ever its officially recognized, you can all still unofficially wine and cry about it. Dam that must be tiring!) However, arguing the Montanan/Gibbs or any other great quarterback/coach tandem is a plausible thing considering the past success these other great coaches and Qbs had. Either way, it comes down to your own beliefs and opinions.

The past 9 years, playoffs have been the Achilles heel. jets and Giants destroyed their 16-0 and 15-1 seasons and Jets did it in FOXBORO. Can’t win away from NE, especially bad on neutral field. Sooner or later, you have to win in the playoffs away from home, and you have maybe 2 more years of Brady to prove it. vegas odds mean nothing, drunken beantowners put their salary on the Pats every year. As for the entire history of the NFL though, I’d say anywhere in the top 5 would be a fair assesment.

The Steelers under Chuck Noll and Terry Bradshaw won 4 SuperBowls in 6 years. Joe Montana won 3 SuperBowls with Bill Walsh and one with George Seifert the year after Walsh retired. And last but not least, Vince Lombardi and Bart Starr combined for 5 NFL Championships, including 2 SuperBowls.

There is no way Belichick is the best head coach in the NFL ever.

First, if it weren’t for a bogus call that resulted in the “Tuck Rule” which is now gonzo, the Patriots would not have gone to a Super Bowl.

Second, despite the spin, the Patriots have cheated on several occasions to obtain a competitive advantage and were penalized by the NFL for it. That fact alone removes Belichick from ever being considered a great head coach because everything he does is tainted.

In NASCAR there is a similar situation – Jimmy Johnson and his race team have been caught violating NASCAR rules AND PENALIZED for it – 14 TIMES! He won 5 championships during that period. That removes him from consideration for being considered a great driver because of the taint of his unethical team’s conduct (not to mention he drives for a team who has an owner who was convicted of a felony only to be pardoned by an impeached President).

Brady is also not the greatest QB ever – all of Belichick’s baggage becomes Brady’s – and he’s a prick to boot. Montana and Steve Young were far better passers than Brady and I’d fancy to say Brady only functions in a perfect environment. He can’t win when his team is even a bit suspect in talent.

WHAAAAA. I’m a jets fan, we can’t beat the Pats. Our franchise is a joke. Our QB, HC, GM for the last 10 yrs, owner are a punchline. We’re in cap hell. We don’t have much hope. We haven’t been in a SB since 1968. I guess blaming it on the Pats cheating is all I’ve got.

    ————–

I doubt if your a Jets fan, but if you are a distraught compatriot (funny word to use here) you’ve thoroughly whiffed on the point of the article & commenting so let me get you up to speed. I empathize with you but our lack of results on the field has nothing to do with the misguided comparison & justification as you propose. There is no shortage of fodder for our organizations shortcomings. The difference is we can admit it where they cannot! Bottom line I’d rather have the one clean title in 1968 and be able to look myself in the mirror then the 3 dirty ill gotten ones and fool myself into thinking we’re true champions.

No quarterback’s resume matches up. Manning and Montana have comparable ones, but still doesnt match. Montana also had Rice, that helps. Brady had an out of his prime Moss for one year and almost did the impossible while breaking all sorts of records.

He could have easily been the next trent dilfer after the first SB but loves the game and dedicated his life to being better and got better, year in and year out.

His passion and dedication for the game is rare quality. STOP HATING! It is not good for your health. Do you hate Lebron? Do you hate Albert Pujols? no. Just stop.

Or acting like the jets won another one, because they won a playoff game against the Pats. I’ve seen the 3 trophies at Patriot place. Super Bowl Champions 2001, 2003, 2004. Clean as a whistle. Official. Only in the minds of haters, fans of teams the Pats have left in their wake, is anything tainted. Won it fair and square pal, chew on that. It’s hard to argue. In the age of Free Agency, its much harder to keep a team relevant. Chuck Knoll, for example got to return the same team year after year. Bill has had to plug in new players every year, and the Patriots just keep on trucking. Same with Brady. He’s had some pretty mediocre WR’s for most of his career, yet just keeps putting up amazing numbers and gets his team to the SB. Its alot easier to keep winning when you have no fear of losing your good players to FA. Id say Bill and Brady are both top two or three at their respective positions, and probably the best duo ever.

I seriously doubt that the Patriots would have won any of the Super Bowls that they won in the early 2000’s if they had played fairly.

If Barry Bonds and Roger Clemens do not get into the baseball Hall of Fame, then I do not see how Tom Brady and Bill Belichick could get into the pro football Hall of Fame.

  196. thenflguru says: Mar 19, 2013 10:15 PM

The NFL quickly covered up the scandal and destroyed the evidence to preserve the trust of the fans. In my opinion, this quote from the book expresses how serious this scandal really was: “Apparently what was on the tapes was enough to scare the hell out of Goodell.

Perhaps if the public were to see the tapes, they would be convinced that the Patriots were not what they appear. Perhaps they would even question what it is that they watch on Sunday.”

As an NFL football fan, if I believed the games were not fair, I would never watch them again. I’m one small person but multiply this feeling by tens of millions of other fans. This could bring down the whole NFL.

In my mind, the three Super Bowls won by the Patriots are tainted and an asterisk should be placed next to these wins. Legitimate teams were denied an opportunity to compete for the ultimate prize.

The Patriot’s two wins over Pittsburgh in the AFC Championship, I’m convinced, were aided by the video obtained by the Patriots. But all the history will not be changed. New England will never relinquish their three titles.

The sixth round drafted Tom Brady, though traveling the path of fraud and deception, will eventually arrive and be welcomed in Canton.

The NFL has successfully and shamefully mastered one of the most prolific cover-ups in modern history. The legacy of the New England Patriots is fraud and deceit. Not to mention poor sportsmanship in the instances when they do lose.

I suspected as much, but no there wasn’t sarcasm just you hiding behind your identity like you are hiding behind the illusion of those championship trophies. I just love to read all the responses from all the homers (regardless of which team you cheer for)! Not a single rational response in all 100+ posts so far.

OF COURSE Bob Kraft thinks he has the greatest coach and QB ever… and if he didn’t, would he say he didn’t think so while still trying to get the most out of each of them?!

BTW, while the 49ers dynasty of the past did exceed BB and TB in many (if not most) of the important numbers… that was with Jerry Rice and before Free Agency. That doesn’t mean Walsh and co couldn’t have pulled off the same domination. But for all of you who point out examples like that so argue against the Patriot’s being great miss the entire point. The fact they are in the same conversation is compelling enough when most Patriot’s-haters will agree the 49ers (or the Cowboys, or the Steelers, etc) were dominant for their generation. If you have to call on one of them to disprove the claim that the Patriots are the dominant team of this era, you are just proving the point.

If Belichick is such a defensive genious why is our defense ranked at the bottom each year? If Belichick is such a defensive genious why hasn’t he figured out we can’t cover the receivers, go get some pass rushers!!!
If you sack the QB he can’t throw a pass to the receivers you can’t cover for 8 seconds. I’ve always been a Brady fan but never a Belichick fan. Let see how smart he is when Armendola goes down hurt and Welker is catching 90+ passes and the Broncos wax the Patriots cause they can’t pressure Manning and can’t cover Welker, Decker, and Thomas.

Brady and Belichick are #1 by most objective standards.

They made it to the biggest game in the sport 5 times in 12 years. Montana / Walsh were 3 for 10. The same franchise then won SBs without Walsh and they even won a SB without Montana.

DeBartalo was the greatest owner (sorry Kraft)

Walsh went to 4 NFCCGs in 10 seasons. The 49ers went to 6 NFCCGs in the next 10 seasons. Walsh was fantastic, but he is not unreachable.

When laughing about spygate, be sure to add that the team is 75-20 with 3 final 4s since Sept 9, 2007 including a pair of SB appearances and the only official 16-0 season. (The ’84 49ers earned 19-0 on the field but a chump ref made them 15-1)

The Giants are the only team that compares since spygate at 58-37 and both Super Bowl wins but no one could deny that NY has embarrassed themselves for long stretches nearly every year.

The same people who mock Brady for losing SBs make excuses for all 11 playoff losses by the greatest regular season QB of all time.

Apparently there are fans and players alike out there who actually don’t know the following:

    1. Matt Walsh never filmed any practices of the Rams Super Bowl practice. Period. The newspaper misrepresented what Walsh said and retracted the story. Matt Walsh himself confirms it never happened.

Yet fans and players for some reason are in denial.

    2. The Patriots broke a 2006 rule clarifying that signal filming can take place in the stands (as it continues today) but not from the sidelines. The memo stated that it could not take place from the sidelines “for game day purposes” – and Belichick took that to mean he could still film for post-game reference.

Goodell didn’t like to be out-lawyered by Belichick and it cost them a first round draft choice.

Yet some fans can’t seem to grip the logic that the violation of a 2006 rule in 2007 DOES NOT invalidate Super Bowl wins in 2001, 2003 & 2004.

If that were the case, every rule change would invalidate every other Super Bowl win for every other team.

    3. AFTER Spygate the Patriots went 16-0 in the regular season – something no other team has done.

Going undefeated is NOT proof that the team “can’t win without cheating” that some apparently think it is.

Since Spygate no team in the NFL has a better record than the Patriots. Again, having the best record in the NFL is not “proof” they “cant’ win without cheating.”

Have they won a Super Bowl since? No – but that’s mainly because of 2 dropped Patriots passes and one incredible catch by the Giants.

That too is not “proof” that they “can’t win without cheating”

Let’s think a bit before posting folks. I understand you hate the fact that the Patriots have been the best team in the NFL for over a decade – but you can’t argue with the facts.

Lombardi took a team that was the laughing stock of the league in the late 1940s and all of the 1950s and in two years turned them into a powerhouse that owned the NFL for a decade.

Belichick took over a team that was in the playoffs two years prior and was in the Super Bowl 3 years prior.

Why is this even a conversation?

Last night the NFL had a great show about the 49er’s 1994 Super Bowl season. Steve Young said (I’m paraphrasing here) that perception is reality and that is truly how you are defined no matter if it is true or not. If that is the overall perception then that is how it is, true or not. And he was talking about how he was perceived vs. Montana. Unfortunately Spygate did occur. Unfortunately the investigation occurred after the crime had long ago been occurring. Unfortunately the NFL burned those tapes and did not release them to the public. That would be like expecting the Republican party to investigate themselves and punish themselves during the Watergate crime. Do you think Nixon would have resigned if those tapes weren’t made public? What if those tapes weren’t made public and the public had knowledge that they existed. What if they were then burned by President Nixon and his administration after an administration official investigated it and suspended those members and fined them, would we have trusted it? Would there be a perception among us back then that they were hiding something and covering something up? Would we have just trusted and taken Woodward and Bersteins words?

Buch of cry babies in here I swear, Brady is the best period. Then Montana, Favre, Elway, Kelly, Bradshaw and Marino.

  249. rc33 says: Mar 20, 2013 2:51 PM

They’re in the mix, both of ‘em.
So by answering some reporters question, Kraft sticks up for his guys and you jamokes are what…shocked by his response?
I’d love to see Halas, Lombardi, Shula and Walsh accomplish what they did in today’s free agency/salary cap era.

  250. seaeagle707 says: Mar 21, 2013 3:33 PM

Did you really expect Kraft, to say that Tom Landry was the best coach ever? Or that Joe Montana was the best QB, to ever play the game? I sorta doubt that Brett Favre, would ever rate Kraft, as the best owner.

I wish spygate never happened just to see what the haters would rally around, The hate runs deep, and it can,t just be from an illeagle video tapping proceedure. C’mon haters, be creative. Justify all this hate with something more tangeble I.E. steroids, too many men on the feild, holding, pass interference. Something that actually warrants the lable of “cheeters” It,s almost funny. Years from now when a young kid is looking up superbowl winners, he will see the patriots won 3 in 4 years.. nothing about video.
Give it up.. its become unintresting

  252. jody46 says: Mar 22, 2013 11:55 PM

I guess he never heard of Joe Montana. He won superbowls also and I wish he wasn’t so clutch too because the Bengals would of won one!!! Brady is great but not the greatest qb ever, Montana big time. I don’t know about the coaching, I mean if you have so many great talent on your team your going to win games even if its a bad coach, which he isn’t. He is good but not the best ever. I say that because he coached cleveland and was bad. So it does matter if you have great players.

  253. jody46 says: Mar 22, 2013 11:58 PM

oh if were talking about combination coach and qb on same team I would still pick Montana and walsh as coach

  254. Deof Movestofca says: Mar 25, 2013 4:24 PM

@gizzmonic: Ever heard of the Chicago “Black Sox”? Do the name “Nancy Kerrigan” and “Tonya Harding” ring a bell? I wouldn’t put too much hope of people forgetting spygate. And your (and some of your fellow Patsy fans) attempt to label all that keep bringing it up as “haters” is misguided because at least some of us believe that integrity is more important than winning and are just as willing to apply the same standard to our own teams as we are to the Patsies.

  255. rc33 says: Mar 26, 2013 3:26 PM

Integrity, huh? How ’bout the Niners and the Broncos, both of whom were fined money and draft picks for circumventing the early years of the cap.
Had to keep Elway and Terrell Davis happy so they essentially paid ‘em under the table…then went on to win the Super Bowl.
Oh yeah, no Belichick, so those instances don’t count.

  256. fatsolio says: Mar 26, 2013 4:00 PM

Who cares what raft says? Of course he is going to say this since they work for him. This is like all those guys who say their wives/girlfriends are the most beautiful in the world when evidence clearly shows otherwise.

What do I know though. Teflon Tom is indeed the best QB because he won 3 rings behind an elite D and kicker 9-12 years ago and now he throws mainly 3-10 yard passes to wide open guys behind an OL that rarely lets anyone get within 6 feet of him. No other QB could do that. This is of course in the regular season as playoffs come and Brady blows since he usually faces a team that has a defense/gets pressure on him. Just look at his stats over his last 7 playoff appearances and even before during the SB winning appearances.

As for Bill, yes, he is indeed the best ever which explains why he continually gets out-coached in the playoffs now.
